Growth hormone-releasing hormone (Ghrh) neurons in the dorsomedial ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMNdm) express the metabolic transcription factor steroidogenic factor-1 and hypoglycemia-sensitive neurochemicals of diverse chemical structures, transmission modes, and temporal signaling profiles. Ghrh imposes neuromodulatory control of coexpressed transmitters. Multiple metabolic sensory mechanisms are employed in the brain, including screening of the critical nutrient glucose or the energy currency ATP.

The decision to establish a network of researchers centers on identifying shared research goals. Ecologically specific regions, such as the USA's National Ecological Observatory Network's (NEON's) eco-climatic domains, are ideal locations by which to assemble researchers with a diverse range of expertise but focused on the same set of ecological challenges. The recently established Great Lakes User Group (GLUG) is NEON's first domain specific ensemble of researchers, whose goal is to address scientific and technical issues specific to the Great Lakes Domain 5 (D05) by using NEON data to enable advancement of ecosystem science.

Background Pharmacists can modify prescriptions from prescribers for clarity and patient understanding, provided the confines of the original order are met, yet the verbiage used by pharmacists is not standardized. Prescription directions for children, especially children eight years old and younger, should be written with the verb "give" instead of "take" as their parents or caregivers are expected to administer them. Errors in prescribing, dispensing, and administering medication comprise a significant portion of preventable medical errors in children.

Obesity has been identified as an independent risk factor for severe outcomes in humans with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and other infectious diseases. Here, we established a mouse model of COVID-19 using the murine betacoronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus 1 (MHV-1). C57BL/6 and C3H/HeJ mice exposed to MHV-1 developed mild and severe disease, respectively.

Purpose: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are Gram-positive organisms that are a known component of normal skin flora and the most common cause of nosocomial bacteremia. For CoNS species, the vancomycin MIC breakpoint for susceptibility set by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute is ≤4 µg/mL. There has been published reports of vancomycin heteroresistance in CoNS with vancomycin MICs of 2 to 4 µg/mL.

Sunflower trypsin inhibitor-1 (SFTI-1) structure is used for designing grafted peptides as a possible therapeutic agent. The grafted peptide exhibits multiple conformations in solution due to the presence of proline in the structure of the peptide. To lock the grafted peptide into a major conformation in solution, a dibenzofuran moiety (DBF) was incorporated in the peptide backbone structure, replacing the Pro-Pro sequence.

Endothelial hyperpermeability is the hallmark of severe lung injury, including acute respiratory distress syndrome. Despite the fact that Never In Mitosis A (NIMA)-related kinase 2 (NEK2) and NEK9 mediate fundamental cellular processes, our knowledge on their role in barrier function is limited. Herein we show that NEK2 and NEK9 inhibition suppresses LPS-induced paracellular hyperpermeability and myosin light chain 2 activation in endothelial cells.

Atopic dermatitis is an immune-mediated skin condition that causes relapsing, pruritic skin lesions. Flares of this disease are often treated with topical corticosteroids; however, the use of these drugs can cause unwanted side effects, such as cutaneous atrophy and impaired wound healing. To minimize these common side effects, severe forms of this disease have been treated with topical calcineurin inhibitors, which previously had no known long-term side effects.

Pharmacological stimulation/antagonism of astrocyte glio-peptide octadecaneuropeptide signaling alters ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN) counterregulatory γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and nitric oxide transmission. The current research used newly developed capillary zone electrophoresis-mass spectrometry methods to investigate hypoglycemia effects on VMN octadecaneuropeptide content, along with gene knockdown tools to determine if octadecaneuropeptide signaling regulates these transmitters during eu- and/or hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia caused dissimilar adjustments in the octadecaneuropeptide precursor, i.

GHRH regulates the secretion of GH from the anterior pituitary gland. An emerging body of evidence suggests that the activities of that neuropeptide are not limited to the GH/IGF-I axis, but they expand towards the mediation of inflammatory processes. GHRHAnt were developed to oppose the activities of GHRH in malignancies, and have been associated with strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects in a diverse variety of tissues, including the lungs.

Despite taking on heavier teaching and service loads, an expanding research program, and serving as mentors to junior faculty, mid-career faculty often feel unsupported. Providing a solid foundation through resource allocation and sharing between and within institutions can facilitate establishment or improvement of faculty development initiatives, workload equity, transparent policies, routine performance evaluation, a process for faculty recognition, and a system of mentoring to create an environment where this essential group of faculty can continue to grow. The following discussion, which includes suggested methods to achieve these goals with a focus on mid-career faculty, serves as a call to action for pharmacy school administrators to assess the state of mid-career faculty at their institution, and if indicated, implement systems that promote success among this group.

Introduction: The ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN) is an estrogen receptor (ER)-rich structure that regulates glucostasis. The role of nuclear but not membrane G protein-coupled ER-1 (GPER) in that function has been studied.
Methods: Gene silencing and laser-catapult microdissection/immunoblot tools were used to examine whether GPER regulates transmitter and energy sensor function in dorsomedial (VMNdm) and/or ventrolateral (VMNvl) VMN counter-regulatory nitrergic and γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons.

The ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN) controls glucose counter-regulation, including pituitary growth hormone (GH) secretion. VMN neurons that express the transcription factor steroidogenic factor-1/NR5A1 (SF-1) participate in glucose homeostasis. Research utilized in vivo gene knockdown tools to determine if VMN growth hormone-releasing hormone (Ghrh) regulates hypoglycemic patterns of glucagon, corticosterone, and GH outflow according to sex.
