Background: Urgent dental care may be the only place where many people, especially vulnerable groups, access care. This presents an opportunity for delivery of a behavioural intervention promoting planned dental visiting, which may help address one of the factors contributing to a socio-economic gradient in oral health. Although we know that cueing events such as having a cancer diagnosis may create a 'teachable moment' stimulating positive changes in health behaviour, we do not know whether delivering an opportunistic intervention in urgent dental care is feasible and acceptable to patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Panoramic radiography is essential for diagnosing dental diseases, but existing AI datasets are limited and not versatile.
  • A new multi-center, multi-task dataset has been created, incorporating images and labels from three hospitals, totaling 6,536 panoramic images of impacted teeth, periodontitis, and dental caries.
  • Benchmark tests indicate that this comprehensive dataset is effective for segmentation and classification tasks, making it valuable for enhancing dental disease diagnosis.

Central serous chorioretinopathy: An evidence-based treatment guideline.

Prog Retin Eye Res

July 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands; Department of Ophthalmology, Amsterdam University Medical Centers, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a relatively common disease that causes vision loss due to macular subretinal fluid leakage and it is often associated with reduced vision-related quality of life. In CSC, the leakage of subretinal fluid through defects in the retinal pigment epithelial layer's outer blood-retina barrier appears to occur secondary to choroidal abnormalities and dysfunction. The treatment of CSC is currently the subject of controversy, although recent data obtained from several large randomized controlled trials provide a wealth of new information that can be used to establish a treatment algorithm.

A significant proportion of patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation (AF) and are in need of thromboembolic protection are not treated with oral anticoagulation or discontinue this treatment shortly after its initiation. This undertreatment has not improved sufficiently despite the availability of direct oral anticoagulants which are associated with less major bleeding than vitamin K antagonists. Multiple reasons account for this, including bleeding events or ischaemic strokes whilst on anticoagulation, a serious risk of bleeding events, poor treatment compliance despite best educational attempts, or aversion to drug therapy.

Background: Healthcare system data (HSD) are increasingly used in clinical trials, augmenting or replacing traditional methods of collecting outcome data. This study, PRIMORANT, set out to identify, in the UK context, issues to be considered before the decision to use HSD for outcome data in a clinical trial is finalised, a methodological question prioritised by the clinical trials community.

Methods: The PRIMORANT study had three phases.

Background: Gastrointestinal parasite (GIP) infections are a major cause of global morbidity, infecting hundreds of millions of people each year and potentially leading to lifelong infection and serious complications. Few data exist on screening for GIP infections in migrants entering the UK or on the current performance of different traditional diagnostic approaches. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of GIP infections in Nepalese Gurkha recruits screened on arrival in the UK.

A frequent source of debate in paleoanthropology concerns the taxonomic unity of fossil assemblages, with many hominin samples exhibiting elevated levels of variation that can be interpreted as indicating the presence of multiple species. By contrast, the large assemblage of hominin fossils from the Rising Star cave system, assigned to Homo naledi, exhibits a remarkably low degree of variation for most skeletal elements. Many factors can contribute to low sample variation, including genetic drift, strong natural selection, biased sex ratios, and sampling of closely related individuals.

Introduction: Oral health professional (OHP) education is likely to vary across Europe in accordance with an EU directive that is open to broad interpretation. It is not clear how OHP curricula are structured or delivered across Europe. The objectives of Part 2 of this paper series are: (i) to provide an overview of common practices in curriculum structure, the availability of facilities, staffing (faculty) and quality assurance processes and (ii) to consider how the existing programme structures align to stakeholder guidance documents.

Article Synopsis
  • Immunoglobulin A vasculitis with nephritis (IgAVN) is the most common vasculitis in children, and this study aimed to analyze clinical outcomes, treatments, and risk factors in a large cohort of 1148 children diagnosed with the condition.
  • The retrospective analysis revealed that poorer outcomes were associated with factors like older age, lower kidney function at onset, hypertension, and certain kidney damage features, but no specific treatment was found to be more effective than others.
  • The study concluded that there is a need for further research and clinical trials to determine effective treatments and improve health outcomes for children with IgAVN.

Oral health and healthy ageing: a scoping review.

BMC Geriatr

January 2024

School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, Central Queensland University, Sydney, NSW, 2000, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • Good oral health is vital for healthy aging, yet there's limited global awareness of oral care for older adults, prompting a review of relevant policies, programs, and interventions.
  • A systematic literature search revealed that national health policies often neglect oral health priorities for older people, with common interventions including educational sessions and practical demonstrations for caregivers.
  • The study highlights a significant gap in effective oral care research and calls for improved guidelines for healthcare professionals, along with further studies to assess intervention effectiveness in enhancing the oral health of the elderly.

Objective: Understanding the regulatory role of homeobox (HOX) and mutated genes in the progression of head and neck cancers is essential, although their interaction remains elusive. This study aims to decipher the critical regulation of mutation driven effects on homeobox genes to enhance our understanding of head and neck cancer progression.

Methods: Genomic mutation data from The Cancer Genome Atlas-Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma were analyzed using VarScan2 for somatic variant detection.

The prevalence of chronic, non-communicable diseases has risen sharply in recent decades, especially in industrialized countries. While several studies implicate the microbiome in this trend, few have examined the evolutionary history of industrialized microbiomes. Here we sampled 235 ancient dental calculus samples from individuals living in Great Britain (∼2200 BCE to 1853 CE), including 127 well-contextualized London adults.

Introduction: Drug-induced acute kidney injury (DI-AKI) is a frequent adverse event. The identification of DI-AKI is challenged by competing etiologies, clinical heterogeneity among patients, and a lack of accurate diagnostic tools. Our research aims to describe the clinical characteristics and predictive variables of DI-AKI.
