Clarithromycin, a common antibiotic found in domestic wastewater, persists even after treatment and can transfer to soils when treated wastewater (TWW) is used for irrigation. This residual antibiotic may exert selection pressure, promoting the spread of antibiotic resistance. While Predicted No Effect Concentrations (PNECs) are used in liquid media to predict resistance risks, PNEC values for soils, especially for clarithromycin, are lacking.

POEMS syndrome (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal Protein, Skin changes) is a syndrome that involves a monoclonal B-cell proliferation, most often plasmacytic, and a variable number of manifestations listed or not in the acronym. These manifestations include sclerotic bone lesions, plasmacytic Castleman disease, papillary edema, peripheral edema, ascites, thrombocytosis and/or polycythemia, venous and/or arterial thrombosis, and renal, pulmonary, and cardiac impairments . Diagnosis is often delayed due to the rarity of this entity and its clinical polymorphism, which can mimic other neurological disorders.

High-dimensional photon states (qudits) are pivotal to enhance the information capacity, noise robustness, and data rates of quantum communications. Time-bin entangled qudits are promising candidates for implementing high-dimensional quantum communications over optical fiber networks with processing rates approaching those of classical telecommunications. However, their use is hindered by phase instability, timing inaccuracy, and low scalability of interferometric schemes needed for time-bin processing.

Trace elements (TEs) in anaerobic digestion (AD) are known to be essential for optimal biogas production, but inhibitive in excessive concentrations. However, the mechanisms of inhibition are not fully understood. The effects of the addition essential TEs (Co, Cu and Ni) and a non-essential TE (Cd) on the microbial community structure of AD were studied in lab-scale reactors, using total TE concentrations that ranged from 0 to 100 μM.

Introduction: The mortality rates associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes exhibit disparities by region, with Central Africa ranking fourth globally in terms of mortality rate. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) does not possess mortality data pertaining to these specific underlying causes of death. This study aimed to determine the death rate attributable to CVD and diabetes in two cities in the DRC.

Objective: Limited sampling strategies are widely employed in clinical practice to minimize the number of blood samples required for the accurate area under the curve calculations, as obtaining these samples can be costly and challenging. Traditionally, the maximum a posteriori Bayesian estimation has been the standard method for the area under the curve estimation based on limited samples. However, machine learning is emerging as a promising alternative for this purpose.

In this paper, we have attempted a theoretical calculation of some plant-isolated compounds as potential inhibitors of oxidative stress and Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs). Herein, theoretical reactivity indices based on the CDFT theory were computed to explore the reactivity of five isolated products from Global reactivity indices based on HOMO and LUMO energy such as electronic chemical potential, hardness, electrophilicity and the local reactivity descriptors Parr function, molecular electrostatic potentials(MEP), electrostatic potential (ESP) and thermodynamic parameters for the studied compounds are computed and discussed using DFT method and two functionals B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP with 6-31 G(d,p) basis set. The free radical scavenging activity mechanisms (HAT, SET-PT, and SPLET) of some of the isolated products with DPPH are also presented in this work.

Domesticated sheep have adapted to contrasting and extreme environments and continue to play important roles in local community-based economies throughout Africa. Here we review the Neolithic migrations of thin-tailed sheep and the later introductions of fat-tailed sheep into eastern Africa. According to contemporary pictorial evidence, the latter occurred in Egypt not before the Ptolemaic period (305-25 BCE).

While plastic chemicals are key drivers of observed effects to aquatic species, there remains a lack of standardized and fit-for-purpose approaches for experimentally deconvoluting the effects of plastic chemicals from particle effects. This study investigated differences in chemical composition determined using two different organic solvents for extractions (dichloromethane-ethyl acetate, methanol) and by thermal desorption applied to 51 thermoplastic and elastomer products. The composition of natural water leachates of four select elastomers was also investigated.

Exosome is a recently emerging cancer-associated biomarker for early diagnostic and prognostic owing to their noninvasive, intrinsic stability, and representativeness of primitive cell state. However, the development of convenient and quantitative methods for exosome analysis remains technically challenging. Here, we proposed a cost-effective assay for the direct capture and rapid monitoring of exosomes utilizing the multifunctional surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, which consisted of CuO-CuO nanowires prepared by a simple thermo-oxidative growth method and subsequently sputtered with Ag NPs.

The MTOR inhibitors have demonstrated antiviral properties, and prior non-randomized studies have suggested they may have a suppressive effect on BKPyV replication. Here, in this randomized, multicenter, controlled trial (BKEVER study), we sought to evaluate the impact of everolimus (EVR) in facilitating the clearance of BKPyV compared to simply reducing immunosuppression among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). All together, 130 KTRs presenting with BKPyV DNAemia were randomized 1:1 into two groups.
