Small, stable biomedicines, like peptides and hormones, are already available on the market as spray dried formulations, however large biomolecules like antibodies and therapeutic enzymes continue to pose stability issues during the process. Stresses during solid-state formation are a barrier to formulation of large biotherapeutics as dry powders. Here, we explore an alternative avenue to protein stabilisation during the spray drying process, moving away from the use of excipients.

Hybrid ultramicroporous materials (HUMs) comprised of combinations of organic and inorganic linker ligands are a leading class of physisorbents for trace separations involving C1, C2 and C3 gases. First generation HUMs are modular in nature since they can be self-assembled from transition metal cations, ditopic linkers and inorganic "pillars", as exemplified by the prototypal variant, SIFSIX-3-Zn (3 = pyrazine, SIFSIX = SiF ). Conversely, HUMs that utilise chelating ligands such as ethylenediamine derivatives are yet to be explored as sorbents.

Despite the economic incentives evidenced in the recruitment strategies of the Iranian fertility industry for egg donors, the official discourse put forward by policymakers conveys egg donation as an altruistic act. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in two fertility clinics in Tehran, I center the narratives of paid egg donors to investigate how multiple meanings are attributed to egg donation as a form of labor, demonstrating how reproductive inequalities are perpetuated in this context. Following feminist theorists of reproductive bioeconomies, I argue that Iranian donors experience and articulate their participation in local egg market through the prism of their economic marginality, gendered responsibilities, and religiously informed beliefs, including divine reward.

Hierarchical linker thermolysis has been used to enhance the porosity of monolithic UiO-66-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing 30 wt% 2-aminoterephthalic acid (BDC-NH) linker. In this multivariate ( mixed-linker) MOF, the thermolabile BDC-NH linker decomposed at ∼350 °C, inducing mesopore formation. The nitrogen sorption of these monolithic MOFs was probed, and an increase in gas uptake of more than 200 cm g was observed after activation by heating, together with an increase in pore volume and mean pore width, indicating the creation of mesopores.

This work reports a synthetic approach based on electrospinning to produce NiO:SnO nanofibers (NFs) for selectively reducing CO to formate above room temperature. Converting waste heat from solar radiation and industrial processes into useable electricity remains a challenge due to limitations of traditional thermoelectrics. Here, we report the solution phase synthesis of axial heterostructure Si and Ge (hSG) nanowires (NWs). The NWs were grown in a high boiling point solvent from a low-cost Sn powder to achieve a powder form product which represents an attractive route from lab-scale to commercial application. Slurry processed anodes of the NWs were investigated in half-cell ( Li-foil) and full-cell ( NMC811) configurations of a lithium ion battery (LIB).

Compared to rigid physisorbents, switching coordination networks that reversibly transform between closed (non-porous) and open (porous) phases offer promise for gas/vapour storage and separation owing to their improved working capacity and desirable thermal management properties. We recently introduced a coordination network, X-dmp-1-Co, which exhibits switching enabled by transient porosity. The resulting "open" phases are generated at threshold pressures even though they are conventionally non-porous.

Bifunctional N-donor carboxylate linkers generally afford and topology coordination networks of general formula ML that are based upon the MN(CO) molecular building block (MBB). Herein, we report on a new N-donor carboxylate linker, β-(3,4-pyridinedicarboximido)propionate (PyImPr), which afforded Cd(PyImPr) reaction of PyImPrH with Cd(acetate)·2HO. We observed that, depending upon whether Cd(PyImPr) was prepared by layering or solvothermal methods, 2D or 3D supramolecular isomers, respectively, of Cd(PyImPr) were isolated.

Measurement of the surface free energy (SFE) of a material allows the prediction of its adhesion properties. Materials can have microscale or sub-microscale surface inhomogeneities, engineered or random, which affect the surface macroscopic behaviour. However, quantitative characterization of the SFE at such length scales remains challenging in view of the variety of instruments and techniques available, the poor knowledge of critical variables and parameters during measurements and the need for appropriate contact models to derive the SFE from the measurements.

Informal and unregulated work is the norm rather than the exception in emerging economies. This review sheds light on the catalytic valorisation of agroforestry biomass through levulinic acid and formic acid towards γ-valerolactone and other higher-value chemicals. γ-Valerolactone is produced by the hydrogenation of levulinic acid, which can be achieved through an internal hydrogen transfer reaction with formic acid in the presence of catalyst. By reviewing corresponding catalysts, the paper underlines the most efficient steps constituting an integrated sustainable process that eliminates the need for external H sources while producing biofuels as an alternative energy source.
