Brain pathology in myotonic dystrophy: when tauopathy meets spliceopathy and RNAopathy.

Front Mol Neurosci

January 2014

Alzheimer and Tauopathies, Faculty of Medicine, Jean-Pierre Aubert Research Centre, Institute of Predictive Medicine and Therapeutic Research, Inserm, UMR 837 Lille, France ; University of Lille Nord de France, UDSL Lille, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Myotonic dystrophy types 1 and 2 (DM1 and DM2) are inherited disorders caused by unstable genetic expansions, leading to toxic RNA accumulations and mis-splicing of genetic transcripts, classifying them as RNAopathies.
  • The presence of neurofibrillary tangles in patients' brains further classifies DM as a tauopathy, which includes several neurodegenerative diseases linked to tau protein aggregates.
  • The review will explore how DM1’s tauopathy relates to other tauopathies and examine overlapping features that contribute to neurodegeneration in the context of RNAopathies and spliceopathies.

Prostate MRI: can we do without DCE sequences in 2013?

Diagn Interv Imaging

Department of Uroradiology, Lille Hospital, 1, rue Michel-Polonovski, 59037 Lille cedex, France; University of Lille Nord de France, Lille 59800, France; Inserm U703, 59120 Loos, France. Electronic address:

Multiparametric MRI (mp-MRI) of the prostate currently provides stable and reproducible performances. The usefulness of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) sequences is currently challenged, as they sometimes only confirm what has already been observed on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and require the additional purchase of a contrast agent. Eliminating these sequences may help accelerate the use of MRI in addition to, or in lieu of, prostate biopsies in selected patients.

This study examined the relationship between the frequency of playing actions performed during a soccer match and the recovery kinetics after the match. Time motion analyses were performed on 10 professional soccer players during 4 competitive matches (14 observations) to determine the number of playing actions completed by players. Subjective ratings, creatine kinase, and physical tests (countermovement jump [CMJ], isometric maximum voluntary contraction of the hamstrings, 6-second sprint on a nonmotorized treadmill) were performed before the match and 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours after the match.

The aim of this study was to develop an antiseptic and blue dyed polyester (PET) vascular graft in order to reach two distinct properties: (i) the prevention of postoperative infections, (ii) the improvement of the graft compatibility with the coelioscopy surgical technique. This work consisted of dyeing a vascular prosthesis with methylene blue (MB) which is known as a cationic dye with antiseptic properties. Therefore, the functionalization of the PET fibers of the prosthesis with a cyclodextrin-citric acid polymer (PolyCD) was achieved in order to improve its sorption capacity.

February 2014

Inserm U995, University of Lille Nord de France, Lille, France; Hepatology Unit, Claude Huriez Hospital, CHRU Lille, Lille, France. Electronic address:

Background: In light of the impact of emerging hepatitis C virus treatments on morbidity and mortality, we sought to determine whether candidates for liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma and decompensated cirrhosis will decrease sufficiently to match liver grafts for hepatitis C virus-infected patients.

Aims: Using a Markov model, we quantified future liver graft needs for hepatitis C virus-induced diseases and estimated the impact of current and emerging treatments.

Methods: We simulated progression of yearly-hepatitis-C-virus-infected cohorts from the beginning of the epidemic and calculated 2013-2022 candidates for liver transplantation up until 2022 without and with therapies.

A procedure to study human operant conditioning is described using a timeout from a high-force requirement as reinforcer when a high force response was required. Experiment 1 reported evidence that a timeout from a high-force requirement acted as a reinforcer and a second experiment demonstrated sensitivity to delay to escape from the force requirement as a parameter of choice in a self-control paradigm. The results of the two experiments indicate a functional similarity between unconditioned reinforcers (e.

We investigated the involvement of potassium inward rectifier current (Kir) impairment in smooth muscle cells of cerebral arteries under the condition of increased susceptibility of stroke, in spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone (SHRsp) rats compared to spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) ones as well as to controls (WKY). Kir current was studied with whole-cell patch-clamp techniques on freshly isolated single smooth muscle cells (SMC) of middle cerebral artery (MCA) from SHRsp, SHR, and WKY male rats (are range 12-32 weeks). A significant and progressive Kir current density reduction was observed on SMC of SHRsp rats from the 22nd week of age on, as opposed to the Kir current density stability observed over the same time in the SMC of WKY and SHR rats.

There is now substantial data in the literature showing that statins can protect against cerebral ischemia. This neuroprotective potency is related to their pleiotropic effects that modulate various pathways implicated in the pathophysiology of stroke. It has been demonstrated that statins exert anti-inflammatory and vasculoprotective effects, thus contributing to a reduction in infarct size.
