The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the inclusion of chopped straw into a diet with pelleted starter feed on starter intake, growth performance, fermentation and blood metabolites of dairy calves during the pre- and post-weaning periods. Forty-four Holstein-Friesian female dairy calves were randomly assigned to four treatments: control (CON, starter without straw; n = 11), low straw (LS, starter feed containing 10% dry matter basis straw; n = 11), medium straw (MS, starter feed containing 15% dry matter basis straw; n = 11) and high straw (HS, starter feed containing 20% dry matter basis straw; n = 11). Dermatopontin (DPT) is a small protein molecule thought to have a role in the formation of the extracellular architecture and adhesion. The aim of the study was to confirm the presence of DPT and to examine its role in placental cell adhesion during pregnancy, at parturition and postpartum in cows. Placental tissue samples were obtained at abattoir from healthy pregnant cows (n = 6) while parturient samples were collected during caesarian section and retrospectively divided into released up to 6 h (R; n = 5) and not released up to 6 h (NR; n = 4) foetal membranes.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) catalyze the oxidative cleavage of glycosidic bonds in recalcitrant polysaccharides such as chitin and cellulose and their discovery has revolutionized our understanding of enzymatic biomass conversion. The discovery of LPMOs raises interesting new questions regarding the roles of other oxidoreductases and abiotic redox processes in biomass conversion.
