With ongoing global warming, increasing water deficits promote physiological stress on forest ecosystems with negative impacts on tree growth, vitality, and survival. How individual tree species will react to increased drought stress is therefore a key research question to address for carbon accounting and the development of climate change mitigation strategies. Recent tree-ring studies have shown that trees at higher latitudes will benefit from warmer temperatures, yet this is likely highly species-dependent and less well-known for more temperate tree species.

Tropical forest phenology directly affects regional carbon cycles, but the relation between species-specific and whole-canopy phenology remains largely uncharacterized. We present a unique analysis of historical tropical tree phenology collected in the central Congo Basin, before large-scale impacts of human-induced climate change. Ground-based long-term (1937-1956) phenological observations of 140 tropical tree species are recovered, species-specific phenological patterns analyzed and related to historical meteorological records, and scaled to characterize stand-level canopy dynamics.

Monitoring of carbon-water fluxes at Eurasian meteorological stations using random forest and remote sensing.

Simulating the carbon-water fluxes at more widely distributed meteorological stations based on the sparsely and unevenly distributed eddy covariance flux stations is needed to accurately understand the carbon-water cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. We established a new framework consisting of machine learning, determination coefficient (R), Euclidean distance, and remote sensing (RS), to simulate the daily net ecosystem carbon dioxide exchange (NEE) and water flux (WF) of the Eurasian meteorological stations using a random forest model or/and RS. The daily NEE and WF datasets with RS-based information (NEE-RS and WF-RS) for 3774 and 4427 meteorological stations during 2002-2020 were produced, respectively.

This study deliberated the effect of ultrasonic treatment on collagen self-assembly behavior and collagen fibril gel properties. Bovine bone collagen I which had undergone ultrasonic treatment with different power (0-400 W) and duration (0-60 min) was analyzed. SDS-PAGE and spectroscopic analysis revealed that ultrasonic treatment decreased collagen molecular order degree and the number of hydrogen bonds, stretching collagen telopeptide regions while maintaining the integrity of the collagen triple-helical structure.

A novel calcium-binding peptide from bovine bone collagen hydrolysate was screened based on a new target-the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR), and its chelation mechanism and calcium absorption activity were investigated. Glu-Tyr-Gly exhibited superior binding affinities to CaSR because of its interaction with the active sites of the CaSR Venus Flytrap (VFT) domain. Glu-Tyr-Gly-Ca may exist in five potential chelation modes and its potential chelation mechanism was that calcium ions were located in the center and surrounded by ionic bonds (carboxyl group) and coordination bonds (carbonyl, amino, and carboxyl group).

In this work, the application of a hydrothermal treatment at 160 and 180 °C for 60 min was studied to achieve the solubilization of its phenolic components and sugars in order to obtain biologically active extracts. Water shortage and soil nutrient depletion are considered the main factors limiting crops productivity in the Mediterranean region characterized by longer and frequent drought episodes. In this study, we investigated the interactive effects of P fertilizer form and soil moisture conditions on chickpea photosynthetic activity, water and nutrient uptake, and their consequent effects on biomass accumulation and nutrient use efficiency. Two P fertilizer formulas based on orthophosphates (Ortho-P) and polyphosphates (Poly-P) were evaluated under three irrigation regimes (I1: 75% of field capacity, I2: 50% FC and I3: 25% FC), simulating three probable scenarios of soil water content in the Mediterranean climate (adequate water supply, medium, and severe drought stress), and compared to an unfertilized treatment.
