Stacking-Engineered Ferroelectricity and Multiferroic Order in van der Waals Magnets.

Phys Rev Lett

John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138, USA.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials that exhibit spontaneous magnetization, polarization, or strain (referred to as ferroics) have the potential to revolutionize nanotechnology by enhancing the multifunctionality of nanoscale devices. However, multiferroic order is difficult to achieve, requiring complicated coupling between electron and spin degrees of freedom. We propose a universal method to engineer multiferroics from van der Waals magnets by taking advantage of the fact that changing the stacking between 2D layers can break inversion symmetry, resulting in ferroelectricity as well as magnetoelectric coupling.

Resonant pumping of the electronic f-f transitions in the orbital multiplet of dysprosium ions (Dy^{3+}) in a complex perovskite DyFeO_{3} is shown to impulsively launch THz lattice dynamics corresponding to the B_{2g} phonon mode, which is dominanted by the motion of Dy^{3+} ions. The findings, supported by symmetry analysis and density-functional theory calculations, not only provide a novel route for highly selective excitation of the rare-earth crystal lattices but also establish important relationships between the symmetry of the electronic and lattice excitations in complex oxides.

E4F1 coordinates pyruvate metabolism and the activity of the elongator complex to ensure translation fidelity during brain development.

Nat Commun

Institut de Recherche en Cancérologie de Montpellier (IRCM), INSERM U1194, Univ. Montpellier, Institut régional du Cancer de Montpellier (ICM), Montpellier, France.

Pyruvate metabolism defects lead to severe neuropathies such as the Leigh syndrome (LS) but the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal cell death remain poorly understood. Here, we unravel a connection between pyruvate metabolism and the regulation of the epitranscriptome that plays an essential role during brain development. Using genetically engineered mouse model and primary neuronal cells, we identify the transcription factor E4F1 as a key coordinator of AcetylCoenzyme A (AcCoA) production by the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) and its utilization as an essential co-factor by the Elongator complex to acetylate tRNAs at the wobble position uridine 34 (U).

Historical precursors of the field we now call epidemiology date back to Hippocrates. Modern epidemiological science, however, developed as domestic and international infectious disease transmission accompanied industrialization, some nations' economic growth, and colonial powers' military expansion and dominance. This article canvasses ways in which modern epidemiology influenced public health innovation from the late 18th century through the mid-19th century.

Background And Study Aims: Monitoring the symptoms of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) patients is now frequently made in the form of patient reported outcomes (PRO), rather than historical clinical activity scores. Unlike several chronic diseases, the role of telemonitoring in IBD has not yet been defined, particularly in terms of patient compliance with remote monitoring; the aim of our study was to assess patient compliance with digital monitoring of PRO as part of routine medical follow-up.

Patients And Methods: we performed a monocentric prospective study in the Gastroenterology Unit of Liège's University Hospital between May 2023 and February 2024.

Biophysical Chemistry and Diagnostics, Department of Chemistry, Bielefeld University, Universitätsstraße 25, 33615, Bielefeld, Germany.

Flavin-dependent halogenases (FDHs) are promising candidates for the sustainable production of halogenated organic molecules by biocatalysis. FDHs require only oxygen, halide and a fully reduced flavin adenine dinucleotide (FADH) cofactor to generate the reactive HOX that diffuses 10 Å to the substrate binding pocket and enables regioselective oxidative halogenation. A key challenge for the application of FDHs is the regeneration of the FADH.

The Aging Stomach: Clinical Implications of Infection in Older Adults-Challenges and Strategies for Improved Management.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Department of Medicine, Academy of Applied Medical and Social Sciences-AMiSNS: Akademia Medycznych I Spolecznych Nauk Stosowanych, 82-330 Elbląg, Poland.

Aging is a multifactorial biological process characterized by a decline in physiological function and increasing susceptibility to various diseases, including malignancies and gastrointestinal disorders. Helicobacter pylori () infection is highly prevalent among older adults, particularly those in institutionalized settings, contributing to conditions such as atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric carcinoma. This review examines the intricate interplay between aging, gastrointestinal changes, and pathogenesis.

Lysine and arginine methylation of transcription factors.

Cell Mol Life Sci

December 2024

Institute of Biochemistry, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Friedrichstrasse 24, 35392, Giessen, Germany.

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are implicated in many biological processes including receptor activation, signal transduction, transcriptional regulation and protein turnover. Lysine's side chain is particularly notable, as it can undergo methylation, acetylation, SUMOylation and ubiquitination. Methylation affects not only lysine but also arginine residues, both of which are implicated in epigenetic regulation.

Objective: Since the habituation deficit of evoked potentials could be related to abnormal thalamocortical drive, we searched for a modulatory effect of ketogenic diet (KD) on somatosensory-evoked thalamo-cortical activity. KD is effective in preventing migraine. Previous studies showed that KD normalises habituation of somatosensory and visual cortical evoked responses in parallel with a decrease in of migraine attack frequency.

Physical exercise has been shown to induce positive reactions in bone healing but next to nothing is known about how it affects the nanostructure, in particular around implants. In this study, we established this link by using small-angle X-ray scattering tensor tomography (SASTT) to investigate nanostructural parameters in 3D such as mineral particle orientation and thickness. As a model system, rat femoral bone with a bio-resorbable implant (ultra-high purity magnesium) was used.

Assessing Exchange-Correlation Functionals for Accurate Densities of Solids.

J Chem Theory Comput

Research Center Future Energy Materials and Systems of the University Alliance Ruhr and Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation, Ruhr University Bochum, Universitätsstraße 150, D-44801 Bochum, Germany.

The success of Kohn-Sham density functional theory in predicting electronic properties from first-principles is key to its ubiquitous presence in condensed matter research. Central to this theory is the exchange-correlation functional, which can only be written in an approximate form using a handful of exact constraints. A recent criticism of these approximations is that they are designed to give an accurate description of the energy at the expense of a poor representation of the density, which is contrary to the spirit of density functional theory.
