POLYMAT, University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, Joxe Mari Korta Center, Avda. Tolosa 72, Donostia-San Sebastián, 20018, Spain.

Mechanical metamaterials achieve unprecedented mechanical properties through their periodically interconnected unit cell structure. However, their geometrical design and resulting mechanical properties are typically fixed during fabrication. Despite efforts to implement covalent adaptable networks (CANs) into metamaterials for permanent shape reconfigurability, emphasis is given to global rather than local shape reconfiguration.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), despite being the most studied polymer electrolyte, suffers from serious drawbacks, which require fundamental studies behind its underperformance in lithium batteries. Here, we report the effect of the terminal group on triarm PEG stars bearing either hydroxyl (TPEG-OH) or carbonate-ketone (TPEG-Carb-ket) terminal groups. The latter is synthesized by a ring-opening reaction triggered by the -OH end group of TPEG-OH and results in a carbonate-ketone functionality.

Questions about the origin of the adsorption/desorption hysteresis in mesoporous materials are as old as sorption experiments themselves. The historical conception that underlines most existing methods to extract pore size distributions from sorption data assumes that adsorption is a metastable process and that desorption takes place at thermodynamic equilibrium. In this work, we measure nitrogen and argon sorption on a series of 14 SBA-15 ordered mesoporous silicas and use small-angle X-ray scattering to independently determine their pore sizes.

Molecular dynamics and transport coefficients change significantly around the so-called Arrhenius crossover in glass-forming systems. In this article, we revisit the dynamic processes occurring in a glass-forming macrocyclic crown thiaether above its glass transition, revealing two crossover temperatures: at 309 and at 333 K. We identify the second one as the Arrhenius crossover that is closely related to the normal-to-supercooled liquid transition in this compound.

Cascade Exotherms for Rapidly Producing Hybrid Nonisocyanate Polyurethane Foams from Room Temperature Formulations.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2024

Center for Education and Research on Macromolecules (CERM), CESAM Research Unit, University of Liege, Sart-Tilman B6a, Liege 4000, Belgium.

For decades, self-blown polyurethane foams─found in an impressive range of materials─are produced by the toxic isocyanate chemistry and are difficult to recycle. Producing them in existing production plants by a rapid isocyanate-free self-blowing process from room temperature (RT) formulations is a long-lasting challenge. The recent water-induced self-blowing of nonisocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) formulations composed of a CO-based tricyclic carbonate, diamine, water, and a catalyst successfully addressed the isocyanate issue, however failed to provide foams at RT.
