Most Central African rainforests are characterized by a remarkable abundance of light-demanding canopy species: long-lived pioneers (LLP) and non-pioneer light demanders (NPLD). A popular explanation is that these forests are still recovering from intense slash-and-burn farming activities, which abruptly ended in the 19th century. This "human disturbance" hypothesis has never been tested against spatial distribution patterns of these light demanders.

The impact of rising global temperatures on survival and reproduction is putting many species at risk of extinction. In particular, it has recently been shown that thermal effects on reproduction, especially limits to male fertility, can underpin species distributions in insects. However, the physiological factors influencing fertility at high temperatures are poorly understood.

Biotic and abiotic factors interact with dominant plants-the locally most frequent or with the largest coverage-and nondominant plants differently, partially because dominant plants modify the environment where nondominant plants grow. For instance, if dominant plants compete strongly, they will deplete most resources, forcing nondominant plants into a narrower niche space. Conversely, if dominant plants are constrained by the environment, they might not exhaust available resources but instead may ameliorate environmental stressors that usually limit nondominants.

Methods to constrain peptides in a bioactive α-helical conformation for inhibition of protein-protein interactions represent an ongoing area of investigation in chemical biology. Recently, the first example of a reversible "stapling" methodology was described which exploits native cysteine or homocysteine residues spaced at the and  + 4 positions in a peptide sequence together with the thiol selective reactivity of dibromomaleimides (a previous study). This manuscript reports on the optimization of the maleimide based constraint, focusing on the kinetics of macrocyclization and the extent to which helicity is promoted with different thiol containing amino acids.

Although effective leaders are important for reducing employee stress during the COVID-19, limited studies have examined how follower behaviors can influence leader stress and well-being during the COVID-19. This study draws on defeat-entrapment theory to examine how followers' unclear demands during the COVID-19 consequently impact leaders' psychological states and well-being. We conducted a three-wave time-lagged investigation with a sample of 281 leaders in the United Kingdom and found that followers' unclear demands could generate feelings of entrapment in leaders, leading to decreased levels of well-being outcomes in leaders.

Psychotic-Like Experiences in Adolescence Occurring in Combination or Isolation: Associations with Schizophrenia Risk Factors.

Psychiatr Res Clin Pract

January 2021

Department of Psychological Sciences Genes Environment Lifespan (GEL) Laboratory Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development Birkbeck, University of London London.

Objectives: Individual adolescent psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are associated with schizophrenia risk factors. As DSM-5 schizophrenia requires the co-occurrence of at least two psychotic symptoms, we investigated whether co-occurring adolescent PLEs have stronger associations with schizophrenia risk factors, lower quality of life and functioning, and have higher heritability, than individual PLEs.

Methods: Participants were 9646 16-year-old twins from the longitudinal Twins Early Development Study.

Production and heavy application of chemical-based fertilizers to maintain crop yields is unsustainable due to pollution from run-off, high CO emissions, and diminishing yield returns. Access to fertilizers will be limited in the future due to rising energy costs and dwindling rock phosphate resources. A growing number of companies produce and sell arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) inoculants, intended to help reduce fertilizer usage by facilitating crop nutrient uptake through arbuscular mycorrhizas.

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are an increasing global healthcare concern. In this study, we developed a dual-ligand-functionalised Au(SR) (SR) -type gold nanocluster and determined its antibacterial activity against MDR bacterial strains. The pyridinium ligand (SR) provided bactericidal potency and the zwitterionic ligand (SR) enhanced the stability and biocompatibility.

The RNA helicase (non-structural protein 13, NSP13) of SARS-CoV-2 is essential for viral replication, and it is highly conserved among the family, thus a prominent drug target to treat COVID-19. We present here structural models and dynamics of the helicase in complex with its native substrates based on thorough analysis of homologous sequences and existing experimental structures. We performed and analysed microseconds of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and our model provides valuable insights to the binding of the ATP and ssRNA at the atomic level.

Rare earth elements are helping drive the global transition towards a greener economy. However, the way in which they are produced is far from being considered green. One of the major obstacles to developing greener production methods and the design of novel processes and materials involving rare earth elements is the limited thermodynamic data available.

A quantum crystallographic approach to short hydrogen bonds.

CrystEngComm

September 2021

Diamond Light Source, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus Didcot OX11 0DE UK

In this work we use high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction for electron density mapping, in conjunction with modelling, to study short O-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds whose behaviour is known to be tuneable by temperature. The short hydrogen bonds have donor-acceptor distances in the region of 2.45 Å and are formed in substituted urea and organic acid molecular complexes of ,'-dimethylurea oxalic acid 2 : 1 (), ,-dimethylurea 2,4-dinitrobenzoate 1 : 1 () and ,-dimethylurea 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid 2 : 2 ().

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed how effective sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (like empagliflozin, canagliflozin, and dapagliflozin) are in lowering death rates and cardiovascular issues in adults with type 2 diabetes.
  • A Bayesian meta-analysis of 53 randomized controlled trials showed that these medications significantly reduced the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality compared to placebo.
  • While the medications also lowered the risk of heart failure, there was less evidence for their effectiveness in reducing stroke risk, particularly for agents other than canagliflozin.

Article Synopsis
  • Forest and vegetation fires in Asia are significant sources of air pollution, harming air quality and public health.
  • Eliminating these fires could lead to a 7% reduction in fine particulate matter and a 5% reduction in surface ozone, resulting in an estimated 59,000 fewer premature deaths annually.
  • The study highlights that poorer populations are most affected by fire-related PM exposure, particularly in northern Laos and western Myanmar, underscoring the need to prioritize fire reduction for public health improvements.

Phenotypic plasticity is predicted to evolve in more variable environments, conferring an advantage on individual lifetime fitness. It is less clear what the potential consequences of that plasticity will have on ecological population dynamics. Here, we use an invertebrate model system to examine the effects of environmental variation (resource availability) on the evolution of phenotypic plasticity in two life history traits-age and size at maturation-in long-running, experimental density-dependent environments.

Introduction: Detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) is required to initiate oral anticoagulation (OAC) after cryptogenic stroke (CS). However, paroxysmal AF can be difficult to diagnose with short term cardiac monitoring. Taking an Australian payer perspective, we evaluated whether long-term continuous monitoring for 3 years with an insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) is cost-effective for preventing recurrent stroke in patients with CS.
