Numerous hydrological applications, such as soil erosion estimation, water resource management, and rain driven damage assessment, demand accurate and reliable rainfall erosivity data. However, the scarcity of gauge rainfall records and the inherent uncertainty in satellite and reanalysis-based rainfall datasets limit rainfall erosivity assessment globally. Here, we present a new global rainfall erosivity dataset (0.

In cave environments, stable conditions devoid of light-dark cycles and temperature fluctuations sustain circadian clock mechanisms across various species. However, species adapted to these conditions may exhibit disruption of circadian rhythm in locomotor activity. This study examines potential rhythm loss due to convergent evolution in five semi-aquatic troglobitic isopod species (Crustacea: Styloniscidae), focusing on its impact on locomotor activity.

This study aims to investigate the essential oil from leaves of Eugenia pohliana (EOEP) in regard to its chemical composition, antimicrobial and drug-enhancing activity, as well as the reduction of fungal virulence capacity. Chemical characterization using GC-MS showed as major components the sesquiterpenes δ-cadinene, Epi-α-Muurolol, and bicyclogermacrene. The results of antibacterial tests indicated that Staphylococcus aureus was more sensitive to EOEP, that also enhanced the efficacy of gentamicin, erythromycin, and norfloxacin.

The present study aims to develop Asphaltum punjabianum (namely Shilajit) coated Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogels and examine their structural, morphological, degradation, and biological properties. Hydrogels were produced at two different concentrations: 70:30 PVA/CMC and 90:10 PVA/CMC. Following that, Shilajit was applied to the synthesized hydrogels using electrophoretic deposition for a duration of 3 min at 30 V.

Nerve agents are organophosphates (OPs) that act as potent inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of acetylcholine. After inhibition, a dealkylation reaction of the phosphorylated serine, known as the aging of AChE, can occur. When aged, reactivators of OP-inhibited AChE are no longer effective.

Biofuel from wastewater-grown microalgae: A biorefinery approach using hydrothermal liquefaction and catalyst upgrading.

J Environ Manage

September 2024

Department of Civil Engineering, Federal University of Vicosa (Universidade Federal de Vicosa/UFV), Av. Peter Henry Rolfs, s/n, Campus Universitario, Vicosa, Minas Gerais, 36570-900, Brazil. Electronic address:

Third-generation biofuels from microalgae are becoming necessary for sustainable energy. In this context, this study explores the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae biomass grown in wastewater, consisting of 30% Chlorella vulgaris, 69% Tetradesmus obliquus, and 1% cyanobacteria Limnothrix planctonica, and the subsequent upgrading of the produced bio-oil. The novelty of the work lies in integrating microalgae cultivation in wastewater with HTL in a biorefinery approach, enhanced using a catalyst to upgrade the bio-oil.

Land conflicts from overlapping claims in Brazil's rural environmental registry.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

August 2024

Department of Earth System Science and Woods Institute for the Environment, Doerr School of Sustainability, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305.

Satellite-based land use monitoring and farm-level traceability offer opportunities for targeted zero-deforestation interventions on private lands. Brazil's Rural Environmental Registry (Cadastro Ambiental Rural, or "CAR"), a land cadaster based on self-declaration of property boundaries, was created to monitor compliance with national forest laws. It has become an important enabling measure for sustainable supply chain initiatives like the Amazon Soy Moratorium.

Water level regime variation is a crucial driver for taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in seasonally flooded tropical forests.

November 2024

Department of Biology, Graduate Program in Applied Botany, Federal University of Lavras, Lavras, MG 37200-000, Brazil; Phytogeography and Evolutionary Ecology Laboratory, Department of Forest Sciences, Federal University of Lavras, Lavras, MG 37200-000, Brazil.

Floodplains contribute significantly to terrestrial ecosystem service provision but are also among the most vulnerable and degraded ecosystems worldwide. Heterogeneity in floodplain properties arises from variations in river-specific flood regimes, watershed characteristics, and valley morphology, influencing seasonally flooded forests' taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. This study addresses persisting knowledge gaps in floodplain ecology, focusing on the seasonally dry tropics.

The use of yeast to biologically control the production of ochratoxin A, which is caused by filamentous fungal growth, in coffee farms is a promising alternative to conventional methods. However, yeast strains, environmental field conditions, and the chemical composition of grains / fruits can influence the effectiveness of biological control agents. We tested the efficiency of different yeast strains in controlling three species of ochratoxigenic fungi in a coffee-based medium.

The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of supplementing early-lactation cows with a dry pure glycerol product, delivered through the automated milking system (AMS) concentrate, in the first 21 DIM on metabolic markers, milking behavior, and milk production. In 5 commercial AMS dairy herds, 389 dairy cows were randomly assigned, controlling for parity, 21 d before expected calving to 1 of 2 treatments, within farm: (1) the control group (CON) which received the standard AMS pellet (n = 213) from 1 to 150 DIM; or (2) the glycerol group (GLY), which received the treatment AMS pellet (n = 176) formulated to additionally deliver 250 as fed g/d of glycerol product from 1 to 21 DIM, followed by the standard AMS pellet from 22 to 150 DIM. Across all farms, cows were fed partial mixed rations that were similar in ingredient and nutrient composition.

Selective fluorination of the pyrrolidine ring in proline motifs has been found to induce significant conformational changes that impact the structure and biological roles of modified peptides and proteins. Vicinal difluorination of fluoroproline, for example, in (3,4)-3,4-difluoroproline, serves to mitigate the inherent conformational bias of the pyrrolidine ring by inducing stereoelectronic effects that attenuate this conformational bias. In this investigation, we present a quantumchemical analysis of the conformational equilibrium and effects that are induced in difluorinated pyrrolidines, with a particular focus on exploring the impact of and anomeric effects on the conformer stabilities of different stereo- and regioisomers.
