Starvation, which is associated with inactivation of the growth-promoting TOR complex 1 (TORC1), is a strong environmental signal for cell differentiation. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, nitrogen starvation has distinct physiological consequences depending on the presence of mating partners. In their absence, cells enter quiescence, and TORC1 inactivation prolongs their life.

Purpose: Traumatic brain injury (TBI), including pediatric abusive head trauma (AHT), is the leading cause of death and disability in children and young adults worldwide. The current understanding of trauma-induced molecular changes in the brain of human subjects with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) remains inadequate and requires further investigation to improve the outcome and management of TBI in the clinic. Calcium-mediated damage at the site of brain injury has been shown to activate several catalytic enzymes.

Interactions among microbes, minerals, and organic matter are key controls on carbon, nutrient, and contaminant dynamics in soils and sediments. However, probing these interactions at relevant scales and through time remains an analytical challenge due to both their complex nature and the need for tools permitting nondestructive and real-time analysis at sufficient spatial resolution. Here, we demonstrate the ability and provide analytical recommendations for the submicron-scale characterization of complex mineral-organic microstructures using optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) microscopy.

Sickle cell retinopathy (SCR) is a complication of sickle cell disease (SCD) and can drastically impair visual acuity. Screening for SCR is therefore recommended, but evidence for optimal screening frequency on an individual level is lacking. This scoping review mapped the current evidence on risk factors for SCR and sickle cell maculopathy (SCM).

The increasing diversity of single-cell datasets require systematic cell type characterization. Clustering is a critical step in single-cell analysis, heavily influencing downstream analyses. However, current unsupervised clustering algorithms rely on biologically irrelevant parameters that require manual optimization and fail to capture hierarchical relationships between clusters.

The gold standard for detecting the presence of apneic events is a time and effort-consuming manual evaluation of type I polysomnographic recordings by experts, often not error-free. Such acquisition protocol requires dedicated facilities resulting in high costs and long waiting lists. The usage of artificial intelligence models assists the clinician's evaluation overcoming the aforementioned limitations and increasing healthcare quality.

In Switzerland, additional vaccinations against influenza, COVID-19, Streptococcus pneumoniae and varicella zoster virus (VZV), are recommended for patients with chronic lung diseases such as COPD, asthma or interstitial lung disease, since infectious diseases often lead to exacerbation of lung diseases resulting in increased disease burden and mortality. In this review we give an overview on recommended vaccinations for patients with chronic lung diseases, also including vaccinations against pertussis and RSV, which are recommended in international guidelines. While continuous development of vaccines against S.

Background: The increased degradation of the insulin receptor β subunit (InsRβ) in lysosomes contributes to the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress contributes to insulin resistance through several mechanisms, including the reduction of InsRβ levels. Here, we examined how peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)β/δ regulates InsRβ levels in mouse skeletal muscle and C2C12 myotubes exposed to the ER stressor tunicamycin.

Background: The harmonious operation of many insect societies depends upon colony-wide dissemination of a non-volatile pheromone produced by a single queen, which informs workers of her presence. This represents a major challenge in large colonies. Honeybee colonies, which can exceed 60,000 bees, are believed to solve this challenge using 'messenger' workers that actively relay the queen pheromone throughout the hive.

Background: In standard Sequence Analysis, similar trajectories are clustered together to create a typology of trajectories, which is then often used to evaluate the association between sequence patterns and covariates inside regression models. The sampling uncertainty, which affects both the derivation of the typology and the associated regressions, is typically ignored in this analysis, an oversight that may lead to wrong statistical conclusions. We propose utilising sampling variation to derive new estimates that further inform on the association of interest.
