Postnatal growth failure, a common problem in very preterm neonates associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcome, has recently been shown not to be inevitable. There is a wide discussion regarding feeding practices of very preterm neonates, specifically regarding feeding volumes and nutrients supply to avoid postnatal growth failure. Current guidelines recommend an energy intake of 115–140 kcal /kg per d with a considerably higher upper limit of 160 kcal/kg per d.

Floppy mitral valve/mitral valve prolapse and sudden cardiac death.

Prog Cardiovasc Dis

December 2022

Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, United States of America; Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens, Athens, Greece.

It is well appreciated today that sudden cardiac death (SCD) occurs in patients with floppy mitral valve (FMV)/mitral valve prolapse (MVP) without significant mitral regurgitation . Data from studies most likely represent a heterogeneous population and probably underestimate the true incidence of SCD in this group of patients. SCD in patients with FMV/MVP occurs mostly in young individuals without comorbidities.

Department of Intensive Care Medicine, General University of Larissa, University of Thessaly, Faculty of Medicine, Larissa, Thessaly, Greece.

Computational modelling has been used to enlighten pathophysiological issues in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) using a sophisticated, integrated cardiopulmonary model. COVID-19 ARDS is a pathophysiologically distinct entity characterised by dissociation between impairment in gas exchange and respiratory system mechanics, especially in the early stages of ARDS. Weaver and colleagues used computational modelling to elucidate factors contributing to generation of patient self-inflicted lung injury, and evaluated the effects of various spontaneous respiratory efforts with different oxygenation and ventilatory support modes.

Stable angina affects a significant number of coronary artery disease patients, impairing their quality of life and worsening their prognosis. It manifests even despite a history of revascularization and is often poorly controlled with drug therapy. Comorbid conditions are frequently encountered in coronary artery disease patients, affecting their prognosis and rendering the diagnosis and management of angina more challenging.

Diagnosing primary breast tumors of the axillary tail of Spence may be extremely challenging, since several lesions may be located in the axillary fossa. In the presented case, a 54-year-old post-menopausal Caucasian female patient presented to our institution complaining about a lump in her left axilla. The preoperative imaging modalities could not clarify whether the tumor is part of the tail of Spence or metastasis of the axillary lymph nodes.

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and the essential oils are both agents of sustainable agriculture, and their independent effects on the community of free-living soil microbes have been explored. In a tomato pot experiment, conducted in a sandy loam mixture, we examined the independent and joint effects of inoculation with the fungus and the addition of essential oil on the structure of the soil microbial community and the activity of soil enzymes involved in the N-cycle, during the pre-symbiosis phase. Plants were grown for 60 days and were inoculated with Then pots were treated with essential oil (OIL) weekly for a period of a month.

Postural stability deficit could predict ankle sprains: a systematic review.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

October 2018

Michael W. Krzyzewski Human Performance Laboratory, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Duke University, Durham, USA.

Purpose: To perform a systematic review aimed to determine (1) if the postural stability deficit represents a risk factor for ankle sprains; (2) the most effective postural stability evaluation to predict ankle sprains and (3) eventual confounding factors that could influence postural stability and ankle sprain risk.

Methods: A systematic electronic search was performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL using the search terms (balance) OR (postural stability) matched with (lower limb) OR (ankle) OR (foot) and (sprain) OR (injury) on October 2 2017. All prospective studies that evaluated postural stability as risk factor for ankle sprains were included.

Introduction: During cesarean section, the supine position reduces functional residual capacity and worsens lung compliance. We tested the hypothesis that alveolar recruitment maneuvers and positive end-expiratory pressure improve lung compliance in women undergoing general anesthesia for cesarean section.

Methods: Ninety women undergoing cesarean section were randomly assigned to one of two groups in a prospective, double-blind trial.

January 2017

Medical Image and Signal Processing Laboratory, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Technological Educational Institute of Athens, Ag. Spyridonos, Egaleo, Athens, 12210, Greece. Electronic address:

Dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) with gadolinium constitutes one of the most promising protocols for boosting up the sensitivity in breast cancer detection. The aim of this study was twofold: first to design an image processing methodology to estimate the vascularity of the breast region in DCE-MRI images and second to investigate whether the differences in the composition/texture and vascularity of normal, benign and malignant breasts may serve as potential indicators regarding the presence of the disease. Clinical material comprised thirty nine cases examined on a 3.

Background: Anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity typically presents as congestive heart failure (CHF). As immuno-inflammatory activation and apoptosis are important mechanisms in the process of heart failure, the use of biomarkers that could detect cardiovascular toxicity before the clinical presentation is of great importance. We studied whether sTNF-a, sTNF-RI, sTNF-RII, Fas/FasLigand system and NT-proBNP associate with early cardiac dysfunction in patients receiving cardiotoxic drugs.

It is well known that considerable underdosage can occur at the edges of a tumor inside the lung because of the degradation of penumbra due to lack of lateral electronic equilibrium. Although present even at smaller energies, this phenomenon is more pronounced for higher energies. Apart from Monte Carlo calculation, most of the existing Treatment Planning Systems (TPSs) cannot deal at all, or with acceptable accuracy, with this effect.
