Biological nitrogen fixation is a fundamental part of ecosystem functioning. Anthropogenic nitrogen deposition and climate change may, however, limit the competitive advantage of nitrogen-fixing plants, leading to reduced relative diversity of nitrogen-fixing plants. Yet, assessments of changes of nitrogen-fixing plant long-term community diversity are rare.

Invasive fungal infections are a serious complication for haematology patients. However, there is no study on this subject in Reunion Island. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of invasive fungal infections in patients with haematological malignancies at the University Hospital of Reunion Island.

We report high-quality genomes of three strains of pv, the causal agent of mango bacterial canker disease, including the pathotype strain of this pathovar and two strains from Burkina Faso that emerged a decade ago. These strains hosted two to three plasmids of sizes ranging from 19 to 86 kb. Genome mining revealed the presence of several secretion systems and effectors involved in the virulence of xanthomonads with (i) a type I secretion system of the hlyDB group; (ii) and type II secretion systems; (iii) a type III secretion system with several type III effectors, including transcription activator-like effectors; (iv) several type IV secretion systems associated with plasmid or integrative conjugative elements mobility; (v) three type V secretion system subclasses (Va, Vb, and Vc); and (vi) a single i3* type VI secretion system.

El Niño typically induces cooling in the Southwest Pacific Ocean during austral summers, usually leading to decreased marine heatwave frequency and severity. However, the 2016 extreme El Niño unexpectedly coincided with the longest and most extensive marine heatwave ever recorded in the region. This heatwave, spanning over 1.

The amount of ocean protected from fishing and other human impacts has often been used as a metric of conservation progress. However, protection efforts have highly variable outcomes that depend on local conditions, which makes it difficult to quantify what coral reef protection efforts to date have actually achieved at a global scale. Here, we develop a predictive model of how local conditions influence conservation outcomes on ~2,600 coral reef sites across 44 ecoregions, which we used to quantify how much more fish biomass there is on coral reefs compared to a modeled scenario with no protection.

Mexiletine (NaMuscla™) is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myotonia in adults with non-dystrophic myotonia. A cardiac assessment is required as mexiletine may have a pro-arrhythmic effect. Long-term safety data supporting the use of mexiletine in patients with non-dystrophic myotonia combined with the extensive clinical experience of an expert group resulted in creation of an algorithm for cardiac monitoring of patients treated with mexiletine.

Purpose: This research investigated the pre-, per- and post cooling strategies used by competitive tennis players from various levels of play who occasionally train and compete in hot (>28°C) and humid (>60% rH), and dry (<60% rH) environments.
Methods: 129 male tennis players (M = 24.9) competing at regional ( = 54), national ( = 30) and international ( = 45) levels, completed an online questionnaire regarding their use (i.

Emerging and reemerging fungal infections are very common in nosocomial and non-nosocomial settings in people having poor immunogenic profiles either due to hematopoietic stem cell transplants or are using immunomodulators to treat chronic inflammatory disease or autoimmune disorders, undergoing cancer therapy or suffering from an immune weakening disease like HIV. The refractory behavior of opportunistic fungi has necessitated the discovery of unconventional antifungals. The emergence of black fungus infection during COVID-19 also triggered the antifungal discovery program.

Introduction: The Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated () gene encodes a demethylase, which modulates RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) and plays a regulatory role in adipocyte differentiation and the pathogenesis of human obesity.

The key to success in the application of the sterile insect technique (SIT) relies on the ability of released, sterile males to outcompete their fertile wild male counterparts to mate with wild females. However, many insect species exhibit multiple-mating behavior, which can be a way for females to select paternity for their progeny. This study aims to recognize the consequences of potential double-matings during an SIT program and to detect any evidence of sperm selection favoring sperm from fertile mates.

The marine environment represents a formidable source of biodiversity, is still largely unexplored, and has high pharmacological potential. Indeed, several bioactive marine natural products (MNPs), including immunomodulators, have been identified in the past decades. Here, we review how this reservoir of bioactive molecules could be mobilized to develop novel anti-inflammatory compounds specially produced by or derived from marine microorganisms.

Like in many developing countries, the traditional Ethiopian diet relies mainly on starchy staple foods and often lacks sufficient animal-sourced foods which are crucial for cobalamin intake. Furthermore, the concentration of folate in traditionally prepared injera, an Ethiopian cereal-based fermented staple food, is highly variable and injera contains biologically inactive corrinoids. This study aimed to improve the cobalamin and folate content of injera by using cobalamin-producing Propionibacterium freudenreichii and folate-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains, both individually and combined.
