Fates of nutrient elements and heavy metals during thermal conversion of cattle slurry-derived anaerobic digestates.

Thermal processes are emerging as promising solutions to recovering phosphorus and other nutrient elements from anaerobic digestates. The feasibility of nutrient element recovery depends largely on the fates of nutrient elements and heavy metals during thermal processing. This study assesses the partitioning of macronutrients (N, P, K, Na, Ca and Mg) and heavy metals (Zn, Cu, and Mn) between condensed and gaseous phases during thermal conversion of cattle slurry digestates in gas atmospheres of pyrolysis, combustion, and gasification processes.

Global Biases in Ecology and Conservation Research: Insight From Pollinator Studies.

In the fields of ecology and conservation, taxonomic and geographic biases may compromise scientific progress. Using pollinator research as a case study, we evaluate four drivers of these biases and propose solutions to address (i) untested generalisations from highly studied taxa, (ii) information accessibility, (iii) scattered environmental regulations and (iv) restricted infrastructure and funding resources. Expanding the taxonomic, functional and geographic breadth of research and legislation, and involving scientists in policymaking, can generate greater equity, accessibility and impact of future science.

Real-Time Tractography-Assisted Neuronavigation for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

State-of-the-art navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) systems can display the TMS coil position relative to the structural magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the subject's brain and calculate the induced electric field. However, the local effect of TMS propagates via the white-matter network to different areas of the brain, and currently there is no commercial or research neuronavigation system that can highlight in real time the brain's structural connections during TMS. This lack of real-time visualization may overlook critical inter-individual differences in brain connectivity and does not provide the opportunity to target brain networks.

Dual-stage optimizer for systematic overestimation adjustment applied to multi-objective genetic algorithms for biomarker selection.

The selection of biomarker panels in omics data, challenged by numerous molecular features and limited samples, often requires the use of machine learning methods paired with wrapper feature selection techniques, like genetic algorithms. They test various feature sets-potential biomarker solutions-to fine-tune a machine learning model's performance for supervised tasks, such as classifying cancer subtypes. This optimization process is undertaken using validation sets to evaluate and identify the most effective feature combinations.

The incidence of venous thromboembolism is low when risk stratification-based thromboprophylaxis is used after fast-track hip and knee arthroplasty.

Background: The optimal length of thromboprophylaxis after total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA) is unknown. Fast-track protocols have improved patient care and led to shorter immobilization and length of stay (LOS) after THA and TKA, thereby diminishing venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk. Here, we investigated risk stratification-based thromboprophylaxis after fast-track THA and TKA.

Polygenic score distribution differences across European ancestry populations: implications for breast cancer risk prediction.

Background: The 313-variant polygenic risk score (PRS) provides a promising tool for clinical breast cancer risk prediction. However, evaluation of the PRS across different European populations which could influence risk estimation has not been performed.

Methods: We explored the distribution of PRS across European populations using genotype data from 94,072 females without breast cancer diagnosis, of European-ancestry from 21 countries participating in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC) and 223,316 females without breast cancer diagnosis from the UK Biobank.

Accelerometer-based sedentary time and physical activity with incident and progressive tobacco smoking in 2503 children: A 13-year mediation and temporal longitudinal study.

Background: Long-term accelerometer-based studies examining whether engaging in physical activity (PA) reduces the risk of smoking in children are lacking, and whether directly measured adiposity increases smoking risk is uncertain.

Methods: From the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), UK birth cohort, 2503 children aged 11 years with complete smoking and at least one valid time-point movement behaviour data were followed up until age 24 years. ActiGraph assessed sedentary time (ST), light PA (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) at ages 11, 15, and 24-year clinic visits and smoking-based questionnaires were administered, whilst fat mass was measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scanner.

Genome-wide association study of anterior uveitis.

Background/aims: The purpose of this study is to define genetic factors associated with anterior uveitis through genome-wide association study (GWAS).

Methods: In this GWAS meta-analysis, we combined data from the FinnGen, Estonian Biobank and UK Biobank with a total of 12 205 anterior uveitis cases and 917 145 controls. We performed a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) to investigate associations across phenotypes and traits.

Specialized palliative outpatient clinic care involvement associated with decreased end-of-life hospital costs in cancer patients, a single center study.

Background: Studies show that hospital deaths bring significant health care costs, and the involvement of specialized palliative care can help to reduce these costs. The aim of this retrospective registry-based study was to evaluate end-of-life hospital costs in patients dying in a university hospital oncology ward, with or without specialized palliative outpatient clinic contact at any timepoint.

Methods: The study population consists of all patients who died in the Kuopio University Hospital oncology ward in the years 2012-2018 (n = 457).

Mental health indicators in pharmaceutical sciences students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic changed the daily lives of university students and affected their mental health. The aim of this study was to assess the feelings and perceptions regarding the pandemic and teaching, and to identify the mental health symptoms perceived by pharmaceutical sciences students at a Brazilian public university.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with data triangulation (mixed-methods approach), conducted online with semiannual data collection from May 2020 to May 2021.

Effects of vaginal estrogen on serum estradiol during aromatase inhibitor therapy in breast cancer patients with vulvovaginal atrophy: a prospective trial.

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze changes in serum estradiol (E2) levels during concurrent vaginal estradiol therapy and adjuvant letrozole in postmenopausal breast cancer (BC) patients with vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA). Secondary objectives included assessing the effects of therapy on vaginal atrophy, quality of life (QoL) and menopause-related symptoms.

Methods: 20 postmenopausal patients undergoing adjuvant letrozole therapy and experiencing VVA symptoms were treated with vaginal estradiol for 12 weeks.

Background: Epidemiological surveys have monitored chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) and investigated associated factors in Denmark for more than 20 years. This study aimed to analyse CNCP prevalence in the Danish population from 2000 to 2023 and its associations with mental health status and loneliness.

Methods: Population-based surveys were conducted between 2000 and 2023.

Background: Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) associate with prognosis of many malignancies. However, the clinical significance of TLSs is not well-elucidated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients.

Design: This is a qualitative descriptive study.

Methods: The data from nurse leaders (n = 9) were collected in face-to-face or online interviews in June and August 2023 in Finland and analysed using an inductive content analysis approach.

Prescribing beyond borders: Navigating challenges and opportunities in cross-border ePrescriptions for enhanced medication access and safety.

Background: The European cross-border electronic prescription (CBeP) was first introduced in Estonia and Finland. The CBeP service is gradually being implemented across Europe, prompting a need for practical studies to assess its benefits and potential shortcomings.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate Estonian and Finnish pharmacists' experiences with patient identification, personal data protection and safe use of medications with CBeP, as well as main advantages and areas of development of CBeP.

It has been demonstrated that diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is especially sensitive to ferroptosis. Currently, confirming the presence of ferroptosis requires flow cytometry, which is a time consuming and labor-intensive task. Blistering of the cell membrane has been shown to be a ferroptosis-specific morphological change.

Background: This systematic review analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on dementia patients' functional, cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and health related outcomes. It hypothesizes that dementia patients infected with SARS-CoV-2experience more pronounced deterioration compared to those who are uninfected.

Methods: Research from 01/03/2020 to 07/10/2023 was conducted using Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases, and adhering to PRISMA guidelines and the PICO framework.

Determinants of binge eating and its impact on indicators of obesity among Finnish adolescents - a cohort study.

Background: Binge eating, a type of disordered eating, is relatively common among youth and predisposes them to many adverse health outcomes. Diverse psychological and social factors may be associated with binge eating. The aim of this study was to examine child and parental psychosocial determinants of binge eating and its impact on indicators of obesity.

Restricting Periodontal Treatment Frequency: Impact on Tooth Loss in Danish Adults.

Objective: The study aimed to estimate the effect of a periodontal treatment policy that would restrict the receipt of periodontal therapy to no more than once every second year, on the 10-year risk of tooth extraction among Danish adults.

Methods: Data from linked nationwide Danish registers consisted of a random sample of 20 000 50-year-olds who were followed from the beginning of 1990 to the end of 2021. The longitudinal modified treatment policies' causal inference framework was used.

Non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) are most commonly characterized by age-related loss of homeostasis and/or by cumulative exposures to environmental factors, which lead to low-grade sustained generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), chronic inflammation and metabolic imbalance. Physiological shedding and C-terminal proteolytic processing of TMEM106B.

Genetic variants in TMEM106B, coding for a transmembrane protein of unknown function, have been identified as critical genetic modulators in various neurodegenerative diseases with a strong effect in patients with frontotemporal degeneration. The luminal domain of TMEM106B can form amyloid-like fibrils upon proteolysis. Whether this luminal domain is generated under physiological conditions and which protease(s) are involved in shedding remain unclear.

Associations of gestational anxiety and depression with neonatal hair steroid levels.

Brain MRI volumetry and atrophy rating scales as predictors of amyloid status and eligibility for anti-amyloid treatment in a real-world memory clinic setting.

Predicting amyloid status is crucial in light of upcoming disease-modifying therapies and the need to identify treatment-eligible patients with Alzheimer's disease. In our study, we aimed to predict CSF-amyloid status and eligibility for anti-amyloid treatment in a memory clinic by (I) comparing the performance of visual/automated rating scales and MRI volumetric analysis and (II) combining MRI volumetric data with neuropsychological tests and APOE4 status. Two hundred ninety patients underwent a comprehensive assessment.
