Introduction: Approximately 93.3 million Americans are obese (BMI > 30 kg/m) and 51% have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Progression of NAFLD can lead to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is the leading cause of liver transplant in the United States.

Family Physicians' Perception of the New mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines.

Introduction: This study was conducted to assess family physicians' perception of the US Food and Drug Administration-approved mRNA Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, their plans to be vaccinated with an approved mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, and their support for vaccination of patients and family members.

Methods: The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey of 307 practicing family physicians, full-time faculty physicians, and resident physicians in Kansas from December 14, 2020, to December 31, 2020. The study participants completed an anonymous, 20-item survey assessing family physicians' concerns about exposure to COVID-19 and their perceptions of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines to control SARS-CoV-2.

Trends and predictors of 30-day readmissions in subjects with eosinophilic esophagitis: results from a national cohort.

Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic allergic inflammatory condition causing recurrent dysphagia and may predispose patients to repeated hospitalizations. We assessed temporal trends and factors affecting readmissions in patients with EoE.

Methods: Patients with primary diagnosis of EoE and/or a complication (dysphagia, weight loss, and esophageal perforation) from EoE between 2010 and 2017 were identified from the National Readmissions Database using the International Classification of Diseases codes.

Objectives: In the United States, sleep-related deaths are one of the primary causes of death for infants age 28 days to one year. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) developed Safe Sleep Recommendations which provide risk reduction strategies for sleep-related infant deaths. Interventions such as Safe Sleep Community Baby Showers have increased knowledge and intentions to engage in these safe sleep behaviors for women who speak English.

We explored the link between the length of stay (LOS) and hospitalization cost for neonatal abstinence syndrome in 2018. Methods This was a cross-sectional analysis of the 2018 national inpatient sample database.

How Much Education and Training Do Residents Across Specialties Receive in Neuropsychology?

Introduction: Neuropsychologists play an important role on multidisciplinary teams with physicians from multiple specialties. The extent of residency training on the use of neuropsychological services is unclear. Medical residents across multiple specialties throughout the United States were surveyed to assess resident education, training, and understanding of neuropsychological services, along with their intent to consult neuropsychologists in the future.

Analysis of Patient Handoff Between Providers at a Tertiary Urban Medical Center.

Introduction: Few studies have quantified the total number of attending and consulting physicians involved in inpatients' care, and no other research quantifies the total number of all providers participating in inpatients' care. The purpose of this study was to calculate the number of attending hand-offs, the attending encounter time, and the total number of providers participating in inpatients' care for all admitted patients at a tertiary urban medical center.

Methods: The study design was an observational retrospective cohort.

Chief Resident Indirect Supervision in Training Safety Study: Is a Chief Resident General Surgery Service Safe for Patients?

Objective: There has been concern expressed amongst the medical educational community regarding the readiness of general surgery residents in the United States to be competent practicing attendings upon graduation and that limited autonomy may be a contributing factor to this unpreparedness. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an RRC-accredited general surgery residency chief resident acute care surgery service with indirect supervision of cases in terms of safety and outcomes compared to traditional general surgeon cases with direct supervision. The study focused on common general surgical procedures, specifically cholecystectomies, appendectomies, and inguinal and ventral hernia repairs.

Background: Physicians' self-perceived medical errors lead to substantial emotional distress, which has been termed the "second victim phenomenon." Medical errors during residency are associated with increased burnout and depression. It is important to know how residents cope with self-perceived medical errors and how they gain personal and emotional support in order to develop effective interventions.

The Role of Imaging in Diagnosing Transthyretin Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Cardiac amyloidosis is a rare underdiagnosed condition with increasing morbidity and mortality. Its diagnosis is challenging and requires high clinical suspicion. Residency Prep Course Instills Confidence in Interns.

Introduction: Physicians entering surgical residency often feel unprepared for tasks expected of them beginning July 1, including responding to pages, writing orders, doing procedures independently, and a multitude of other requirements. Our aim was to design a surgical boot camp to help graduating senior medical students feel more confident entering residency.
