Survey of psychological resilience among university students majoring in long-term-care-related disciplines in Taiwan.

Background: The psychological resilience of university students majoring in long-term-care (LTC)-related disciplines is crucial for workforce retention and effective care provision in this field. This study aims to investigate the differences in levels of psychological resilience among these students in Taiwan.

Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 258 participants selected via stratified random sampling from 23 universities across Taiwan from November 2021 to November 2022, representing a diverse educational context.

Enhancing anti-vascular endothelial growth factor with photodynamic therapy for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy: A meta-analysis.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents administered as either monotherapy or combination with verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT) are the 2 dominant treatment for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV); however, controversies remain due to small sample sizes and inconsistency in prognosis from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). In accordance with the PRISMA statement, we investigated the efficacy of PDT plus anti-VEGF combination with anti-VEGF monotherapy. This study was accepted by the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023471362).

A cross-sectional study applying the PRECEDE model to explore factors influencing epidemic prevention behaviors among preschool educators.

Background: This study investigates the epidemic prevention behaviors of preschool educators and the factors influencing these behaviors, applying the PRECEDE model as a framework for analysis.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 190 preschool educators from public and private institutions in Taipei City and New Taipei City. A 64-item self-developed questionnaire was used to assess epidemic prevention behaviors and their determinants.

Association between geniquin therapy and the risk of developing periodontal disease in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome: A population-based cohort study from Taiwan.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes dysfunction of salivation and harmful oral conditions. The association between periodontal disease (PD) and pSS with or without geniquin therapy remains controversial. This study evaluated the association between geniquin therapy and the risk of subsequent development of PD in pSS patients.

Effect of spectacle correction on hyperopic children.

Hyperopia is a significant refractive error in children, often leading to vision impairment. This study aimed to investigate whether partial or full spectacle correction is benefit for hyperopia in preschool-aged children. A retrospective study was conducted on hyperopic children visited to teaching medical center outpatient clinic between October 2011 and October 2018, and were categorized into three groups: full correction, overcorrection, and undercorrection.

Microforceps-Assisted Transscleral Fixation of Intraocular Lens.

Purpose: This study presents a novel technique for intraocular lens (IOL) fixation. The technique can be used on single-piece acrylic IOLs and can manage patients who are either with aphakia or with a dislocated IOL.

FEA-Based Stress-Strain Barometers as Forecasters for Corneal Refractive Power Change in Orthokeratology.

Purpose: To improve the effectivity of patient-specific finite element analysis (FEA) to predict refractive power change (RPC) in rigid Ortho-K contact lens fitting. Novel eyelid boundary detection is introduced to the FEA model to better model the effects of the lid on lens performance, and stress and strain outcomes are investigated to identify the most effective FEA components to use in modelling.

Methods: The current study utilises fully anonymised records of 249 eyes, 132 right eyes, and 117 left eyes from subjects aged 14.

User Evaluation of a Chat-Based Instant Messaging Support Health Education Program for Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: Preliminary Findings of a Formative Study.

Background: Artificial intelligence-driven chatbots are increasingly being used in health care, but few chat-based instant messaging support health education programs are designed for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to evaluate their effectiveness. In addition, limited research exists on the usage of chat-based programs among patients with CKD, particularly those that integrate a chatbot aimed at enhancing the communication ability and disease-specific knowledge of patients.

Objective: The objective of this formative study is to gather the data necessary to develop an intervention program of chat-based instant messaging support health education for patients with CKD.

Long-term effects of tear film component deposition on the surface and optical properties of two different orthokeratology lenses.

Purpose: To understand the effects of long-term deposition of tear film components on the surface and optical properties of orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses, two different lenses, Brighten 22 and Optimum Extra, were tested here.

Methods: Ortho-k lenses were immersed in artificial tears and cleaned with a commercial care solution repeatedly for up to 90 days. Both the daily and accumulated lysozyme deposition amounts using an Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay were then analyzed.

Baicalein suppresses HER2-mediated malignant transformation of HER2-overexpressing ovarian cancer cells by downregulating HER2 gene expression.

The upregulation of the HER2 oncogene is associated with a variety of human cancers and is associated with poor prognosis. Baicalein is reported to have anti-tumor activity, but the molecular mechanism of this effect in HER2-positive cancer cells has not been studied. In this study, our data showed that baicalein can inhibit the proliferation and transformation potential of ovarian cancer cells overexpressing HER2.

The psychometric properties of Binge Eating Scale among overweight college students in Taiwan.

Background: The Binge Eating Scale (BES) is a widely used measuring tool to assess binge eating problems in Western countries. However, the psychometric properties of such scales among cross-cultural youth groups are insufficient, and the factor structure continues to be debated; therefore, further research is needed. The aim of this study was to examine the properties of BES among overweight college students in Taiwan.

Stimulation of angiotensin II type 2 receptor attenuates organ injury in rats with polymicrobial sepsis.

Background: Both inflammation and oxidative stress contribute to the pathogenesis of sepsis and its associated organ damage. Angiotensin-(1-7), acting through the Mas receptor and angiotensin II-type 2 receptors (AT2R), could attenuate organ dysfunction and improve survival in rats with sepsis. However, the role of AT2R in inflammation and oxidative stress in rats with sepsis is unclear.

Baicalein Induces G/M Cell Cycle Arrest Associated with ROS Generation and CHK2 Activation in Highly Invasive Human Ovarian Cancer Cells.

Ovarian cancer is a lethal gynecological cancer because drug resistance often results in treatment failure. The CHK2, a tumor suppressor, is considered to be an important molecular target in ovarian cancer due to its role in DNA repair. Dysfunctional CHK2 impairs DNA damage-induced checkpoints, reduces apoptosis, and confers resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation therapy in ovarian cancer cells.

An Exploratory Study of Nurses' Feelings about COVID-19 after Experiencing SARS.

The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003 in Taiwan impacted Taiwanese society. However, the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported in Wuhan and spread around the world. During these outbreaks, nursing staff experienced different levels of pressure.

Severity of Binge Eating Behavior among Overweight College Students in Taiwan and Associated Factors.

Background: Binge eating (BE) is considered a marker of obesity and overweight and a significant characteristic of feeding and eating disorders. Despite the high prevalence of obesity on college campuses, the issue of BE among college students in Taiwan has received little attention. The aim of this study was to investigate BE behavior among overweight college students in Taiwan and associated factors.

Using a Motivational Paradigm to Develop an Exercise Program for Nurses with High Risk of Metabolic Syndrome.

Nurses are frontline care providers whose health is vital to providing good quality of care to patients. The purpose of this study was to develop an exercise program for high-risk metabolic syndrome nurses based on the transtheoretical model. The transtheoretical model was used in this study due to its popular use in exercise behavior change and it can clearly identify the stage of exercise so as to plan an effective program to promote health.

Effects of taurine against benzo[α]pyrene-induced cell cycle arrest and reactive oxygen species-mediated nuclear factor-kappa B apoptosis via reduction of mitochondrial stress in A549 cells.

Taurine is a free amino acid that prevents reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. ROS production is associated with oxidative stress, cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, and DNA alterations in benzo[α]pyrene (BaP)-induced lung cells. Here, we assessed the effect of adding of 25 mM taurine on human pulmonary alveolar epithelial A549 cells treated with different concentrations of BaP.

Olmesartan Ameliorates Organ Injury and Mortality in Rats With Peritonitis-Induced Sepsis.

Introduction: Sepsis and related complications lead to high morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. Olmesartan medoxomil (OLM), a nonpeptide angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker, has antiinflammatory and antioxidative effects in various experimental animal models. The present study aimed to investigate whether OLM protects against sepsis in a clinically relevant model of polymicrobial sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP).

Effect of Peer Victimization on the Long-Term Mental Health Status among Adults Users of Intellectual Disability Services: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study.

Caregiving for mental health among people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) in the ID services was reported as insufficient. The purposes of this study were to investigate five types of peer victimization (PV) experiences among adults with ID using ID services, and to gain a deeper understanding of the influence of PV experience on adults with ID's long-term mental health status. A one-year longitudinal follow-up study was conducted from eight long-term care ID services ( = 176).

Exploring the factors affecting preschool educators' health teaching capacity of life skills using the PRECEDE model: a study of preschool educators in northern Taiwan.

Background: The purpose of this study was to apply the Predisposing, Reinforcing, and Enabling Constructs in Educational Diagnosis and Evaluation (PRECEDE) model to analyze the factors influencing preschool educators' ability to teach health education through life skills.

Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized stratified random sampling and administered survey questionnaires to 503 preschool educators in public and private kindergartens in Taipei City and New Taipei City in 2019. Descriptive and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted.

Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Did Not Increase the Risk of Retinal Vascular Occlusion: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) on retinal vascular occlusion (RVO) development in patients with prostate cancer, using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 1791, 1791, and 3582 patients were enrolled in the prostate cancer with ADT group, prostate cancer without ADT group, and the control group, respectively. The primary outcome was RVO occurrence, according to diagnostic codes.
