Article Synopsis
  • Esophageal atresia is a birth defect where the esophagus does not connect properly, affecting 1 in 2,500-4,500 births, with worse outcomes in low-income countries compared to high-income ones.
  • The study analyzed 55 patient records over a 16-year period in Jordan, revealing that only 9% were diagnosed before birth and showing a high prevalence of associated congenital anomalies, particularly heart issues.
  • The results indicated significant post-operative complications, a mortality rate of 12.8%, and a notable link between the condition and parental consanguinity.

Purpose: Microsatellite instability (MSI) caused by mismatch repair protein (MMRP) deficiency is detected in 15% of sporadic colorectal cancers (CRCs). Our aim is to investigate the frequency of MMRP deficiency in young CRC patients, using immunohistochemical analysis.

Methods: This study targeted cases of CRC at King Hussein Cancer Center from 2004 until 2012 in patients 45 years of age or younger at the time of diagnosis.

Background: Seasonal influenza virus is a common cause of acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) in young children. In 2008, we estimated that 20 million influenza-virus-associated ALRI and 1 million influenza-virus-associated severe ALRI occurred in children under 5 years globally. Despite this substantial burden, only a few low-income and middle-income countries have adopted routine influenza vaccination policies for children and, where present, these have achieved only low or unknown levels of vaccine uptake.

Background: Despite the recent progress in the development of anti-cancer drugs, the treatment of metastatic tumors is usually ineffective. The systemic inflammatory response performs key roles in different stages of the carcinogenesis process including metastasis. The high neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were found to be associated with poor survival rates in the majority of solid tumors.

Background: Many studies showed an association between absolute neutrophil count (ANC), absolute monocyte count (AMC), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with poor overall survival (OS) in patients with cancer. However, only a few studies were conducted to further investigate this association in colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: Clinical data from 299 stage IV CRC patients treated at King Hussein Cancer Center from 2004 to 2012 have been retrospectively reviewed.

Predetermined Anti-Diabetic Drug Regimen Adjustments during Ramadan Fasting: An Observational Study of Safety.

Endocrinol Metab (Seoul)

June 2017

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, Jordan University Hospital, The University of Jordan School of Medicine, Amman, Jordan.

Background: Many Muslim type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients choose to fast the month of Ramadan despite the possible adverse health effects brought about by the change in dietary habits, among other things. Clinical data regarding the safety of multi-drug regimens during fasting are particularly scarce. The aim of the study was to evaluate the safety of a drug protocol devised by the authors to accommodate Ramadan's dietary changes, involving dose adjustments of four anti-diabetic drug regimens in T2DM patients fasting Ramadan.

Endoscopic removal of retained common bile duct stones in patients with T tube in situ.

Surg Laparosc Endosc

February 1995

Department of Internal Medicine, Jordan University Hospital, University of Jordan School of Medicine, Amman.

Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) was performed on 27 patients after cholecystectomy with a T tube in situ at a mean interval of 23 days after surgery. A precut papillotomy facilitated deep cannulation and subsequent standard ES in three patients with impacted ampullary stones. Bile duct clearance was successful at the first attempt in 22 of 25 (88%) patients who had common bile duct stones.
