Background: Superb knowledge of anatomy and techniques to remove the natural barriers preventing full access to the most lateral aspect of the skull base determines the ease of using the transpterygoid approach (ETPA) as the main gateway for all the coronal planes during endonasal surgeries.
Methods: Throughout stepwise image-guided cadaveric dissections, we describe the surgical anatomy and nuances of the ETPA to the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) and upper parapharyngeal space (UPPS).
Conclusion: The ETPA represents a lateral extension of the midline corridor and provides a valuable route to access the PPF/UPPS.

A previous investigation of our research team has demonstrated the suitability of using hepatic total tin (ΣSn) concentrations for evaluating dolphin exposure to organotins (OTs). The present study develops the previous technique into three different approaches that comprise data: (1) on hepatic ΣSn concentrations of 121 Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) from five different coastal areas (CAs): (2) on ΣSn, δC and δN for 40 dolphins from Rio de Janeiro state (RJ), including ten different delphinid species; as well as (3) on hepatic ΣSn concentrations and δN values on 31 individuals from five different fish species from Sepetiba Bay (SB, Rio de Janeiro-RJ, Brazil). Hepatic ΣSn concentrations of Guiana dolphins from Guanabara Bay (GB, RJ) were significantly higher than those found in other four CAs from S and SE Brazilian regions.

Excess body weight confers a high risk to human health. Body weight variation between subjects can be partially explained by genetic differences. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of genetic variants in the ADIPOQ (rs2241766) and LEP (rs7799039) genes with body weight trajectories in children from birth to 6 years of age.

Introduction: Nordic walking (NW) as a form of physical activity has been shown to have benefits in various domains, but little is known about the effect of NW on more specific biomechanical parameters. The purpose is to determine the impact of NW on the following parameters: walking speed/distance, muscle activation, spatiotemporal parameters, kinematics and ground reaction force.
Evidence Acquisition: A literature search was carried out in different databases from October 2008 to October 2018.

Background: Expanded endonasal approaches can provide direct access to the midline skull base from the anterior cranial fossa to the ventral foramen magnum. Surgical strategies of bone drilling, dural opening, and intradural dissection can determine the area of surgical exposure and instrument handling, affecting the safety of devascularizing/debulking suprasellar tumors.
Methods: We describe an expanded endoscopic endonasal approach for suprasellar lesions, with stepwise image-guided dissections highlighting surgical pearls and pitfalls to enhance surgical safety.

This study addresses gaps in our understanding of pre-fertilization and archegonia development and reinterprets embryonic ontogenesis from Burlingame (Bot Gaz 59:1-39, 1915) to the present based on timescale and structural features allowing us to determine functionally and developmentally accurate terminology for all these stages in A. angustifolia. Different from previous reports, only after pollination, pre-fertilization tissue development occurs (0-13 months after pollination (MAP)) and gives rise to a mature megagametophyte.

Bioabsorbable barrier membrane is desired in dental medicine for treatment of periodontal diseases caused by different types of bacteria. Bioactive and bioabsorbable bacterial cellulose (BC) is a promising material for such application. However, a key challenge to implement this approach is produce BC membranes selectively oxidized and loaded with a bactericide, in order to modulate bioabsortion time and bactericide effect, respectively.

Background: The role of patent foramen ovale is a field of debate and current publications have increasing controversies about the patients' management in young undetermined stroke. Work up with echocardiography and transcranial Doppler (TCD) can aid the decision with better anatomical and functional characterization of right-to-left shunt (RLS). Medical and interventional strategy may benefit from this information.

Background: Stroke population-based studies in the same setting comparing time trends of rates are a gold standard method to determine the primary prevention status of stroke. Twelve years ago, we measured the stroke incidence and mortality in Matão city, Southeast of Brazil.
Objective: This second Matão stroke registry study aimed to determine the time trends in the incidence, mortality, case fatality, and functional status of patients with stroke.

Parabolic flight maneuvers of Novespace's Airbus A310 ZERO-G produce subsequent phases of hypergravity (about 20 s), microgravity (about 22 s) and another 20 s hypergravity on experiments located in the experiment area of the aircraft. The 29 DLR parabolic flight campaign consisted of four consecutive flight days with thirty-one parabolas each day. Euglena gracilis cells were fixed with TRIzol during different acceleration conditions at the first and the last parabola of each flight.

Colistin (polymyxin E) is a membrane-destabilizing antibiotic used against Gram-negative bacteria. We have recently reported that the outer membrane prevents the uptake of antibacterial chlorophyllin into Gram-negative cells. In this study, we used sub-toxic concentrations of colistin to weaken this barrier for a combination treatment of and serovar Typhimurium with chlorophyllin.

Various studies have suggested a role of vitamin D in inflammation. However, its effect on ferritin, a biomarker of inflammation, has received relatively little attention. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) with serum ferritin (SF) concentrations, and to examine whether temporal increases in serum 25(OH)D concentrations are paralleled by a reduction in SF concentrations.

In light of the growing body of literature suggesting a beneficial effect of vitamin D on inflammatory response, we hypothesized that vitamin D affects serum ferritin (SF), a biomarker of inflammation. The objective of the present study is to examine the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] with elevated SF concentrations indicative of inflammation as no earlier study has done so. Data from 5550 Canadian adults who participated in the 2012/2013 and the 2014/2015 Canadian Health Measures Surveys were analysed.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the zona incerta has shown promising results in the reduction of medically refractory movement disorders. However, evidence supporting its efficacy in movement disorders secondary to hemorrhagic stroke or hemichoreoathetosis is limited. We describe a 48-year-old man who developed progressive hemichoreoathetosis with an arrhythmic, proximal tremor in his right arm following a thalamic hemorrhagic stroke.
