Background And Objective: Starting dialysis is a life-changing transition for people living with kidney disease. People feel overwhelmed with diet changes, medications and surgical interventions, and often experience high levels of anxiety, depression and hospital admissions. The objective of this study was to explore and describe the experiences and perspectives of people starting dialysis.

Introduction/review Of Literature: There is wide variability in the length of full-time clinical education experiences (CEEs) among Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs. We investigated academic and clinical faculty perspectives on the optimal length and level of agreement on the length, timing, and offering of full-time CEEs.

Subjects: A survey assessing perspectives on the optimal length and level of agreement for the length, timing, and offering of full-time CEEs was completed by 100 academic and 240 clinical faculty.

Effects of Group Exercise on Motor Function and Mobility for Parkinson Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objective: Parkinson disease (PD) is associated with a predictable decline in motor function and mobility that is commonly managed with exercise. There is a limited understanding of the effects of group exercise compared to individual exercise (IE) and usual care (UC) on motor function and mobility. Our purpose was to investigate the effects of group exercise compared to IE and UC on motor function and mobility for people with PD.

Implementation of Physical Therapist Services for Men Undergoing Radical Prostatectomy: An Administrative Case Report.

Objective: Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the USA, and radical prostatectomy (RP) is the primary surgical treatment option. With an increasing number of men undergoing RP and surviving prostate cancer, clinical management strategies have broadened to improve the preoperative and postoperative patient experience and minimize treatment-related functional consequences. Urinary incontinence is a predictable functional consequence of RP.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between vertebral margins at individual vertebral levels between T12-L5 vertebra and chronological age and develop predictive models. Three hundred and nineteen CT scans from a medical imaging database in North America were randomly selected. Three superior and inferior vertebral margin sites were scored based on observable age-related changes.

Extensive regional variation in the phenology of insects and their response to temperature across North America.

Climate change models often assume similar responses to temperatures across the range of a species, but local adaptation or phenotypic plasticity can lead plants and animals to respond differently to temperature in different parts of their range. To date, there have been few tests of this assumption at the scale of continents, so it is unclear if this is a large-scale problem. Here, we examined the assumption that insect taxa show similar responses to temperature at 96 sites in grassy habitats across North America.

Estimating the Effect of Aerobic Exercise Training on Novel Lipid Biomarkers: A Systematic Review and Multivariate Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background: Aerobic exercise training (AET) prescribed as lipid management treatment positively affects the standard lipid profile and reduces cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Apolipoproteins, lipid and apolipoprotein ratios, and lipoprotein sub-fractions may more effectively predict CVD risk than the standard lipid profile but an AET response in these biomarkers has not been established.

Objectives: We conducted a quantitative systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to (1) determine the effects of AET on lipoprotein sub-fractions, apolipoproteins and relevant ratios; and (2) identify study or intervention covariates associated with change in these biomarkers.

Interdisciplinary Occupational and Physical Therapy Approach to Treating Constipation and Fecal Incontinence in Children.

Aims: This case series was completed to determine the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary (occupational and physical therapy) approach to treating constipation and fecal incontinence in children. Non-pharmacological therapies for treating constipation and incontinence are showing potential benefits, especially for children not responding to standard medical treatment, which involves oral laxatives for fecal dis-impaction (cleanout) and maintenance dosing to prevent further impaction.

Methods: A retrospective chart review, surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback, and parent and child reports of progress was completed for two children ages 4 and 10 years old.

Purpose: Our purpose was to examine the reliability and validity of the Pediatric Communication and Handling Self-Efficacy Scale (PCHSES) and develop a shorter, modified PCHSES.

Methods: With 92 students, the reliability of the PCHSES was assessed by determining the internal consistency of each construct (Communication; Patient Handling). Construct validity, responsiveness, and convergent validity were assessed to determine the validity.

Spinosad is a biologically based insecticide used widely by both organic and conventional growers. Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, is infamous for its ability to evolve resistance to insecticides.

Preoperative exercise interventions to optimize continence outcomes following radical prostatectomy.

Urinary incontinence is a common and predictable consequence among men with localized prostate cancer who have undergone radical prostatectomy. Despite advances in the surgical technique, urinary continence recovery time remains variable. A range of surgical and patient-related risk factors contributing to urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy have been described, including age, BMI, membranous urethral length and urethral sphincter insufficiency.

Using a 3D-Printed Prosthetic to Improve Participation in a Young Gymnast.

Background And Purpose: The purpose of this case report was to investigate the application of a 3-dimensional (3D)-printed prosthetic hand to improve a child's participation, confidence, and satisfaction in gymnastic classes, specifically, horizontal bar-related skills.

Summary Of Key Points: A 9-year-old child was unable to participate in horizontal bar-related gymnastic skills due to a congenital hand deficiency. A prosthetic hand was designed, 3D printed, modified repeatedly, and incorporated into a program, which resulted in improvements in the child's ability to participate in gymnastics.

Multiscale Network Modeling of Fibrin Fibers and Fibrin Clots with Protofibril Binding Mechanics.

The multiscale mechanical behavior of individual fibrin fibers and fibrin clots wasmodeled by coupling atomistic simulation data and microscopic experimental data. We propose anew protofibril element composed of a nonlinear spring network, and constructed this based onmolecular simulations and atomic force microscopy results to simulate the force extension behaviorof fibrin fibers. This new network model also accounts for the complex interaction of protofibrilswith one another, the effects of the presence of a solvent, Coulombic attraction, and other bindingforces.

The effect of dietary protein intake on factors associated with male infertility: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis of animal clinical trials in rats.

Background: Studies have shown that the amount of protein in the diet affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-testis axis and sub-optimal quantity reduces male fertility potential in both animals and humans. However, individual research reports on the factors associated with male infertility are collectively uncharacterized.

Aim: We systematically reviewed, and meta-analysed animal (rats) studies on the effect of low protein diet on factors associated with male infertility.

Studies with animal models have consistently demonstrated adverse health outcomes in offspring born following nutritional manipulation during gestation. However, the effects of gestational dietary protein modification on reproductive outcomes at birth are less clear. We, therefore, conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials to determine whether high- or low-protein diets are associated with altered reproductive outcomes in a commonly studied species, the rat.

Predicting Success for Student Physical Therapists on the National Physical Therapy Examination: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: In physical therapist education, the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) is the predominant measure of student success. Because the NPTE is a high-stakes examination, predicting NPTE performance is important for physical therapist students and programs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between first attempt NPTE performance, physical therapist applicant variables, and physical therapist student variables.

Assessing Anthocyanin Biosynthesis in Solanaceae as a Model Pathway for Secondary Metabolism.

Solanaceae have played an important role in elucidating how flower color is specified by the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway (FBP), which produces anthocyanins and other secondary metabolites. With well-established reverse genetics tools and rich genomic resources, Solanaceae provide a robust framework to examine the diversification of this well-studied pathway over short evolutionary timescales and to evaluate the predictability of genetic perturbation on pathway flux. Genomes of eight Solanaceae species, nine related asterids, and four rosids were mined to evaluate variation in copy number of the suite of FBP enzymes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis.

Physical Therapy for a Child With Encopresis: A Case Report.

Purpose: To describe the implementation and effectiveness of a multimodal therapeutic approach used to successfully treat a child with encopresis.

Summary Of Key Points: The child demonstrated chronic constipation, poor pelvic floor muscle awareness, weakness, and incoordination during voiding. He participated in 8 sessions of physical therapy intervention including pelvic floor muscle awareness, strengthening and coordination exercises, behavioral adaptations, diet modification, and use of media, art, and interactive visualization activities.
