IMPACT OF NEUROTROPIC VIRUSES ON SURVIVAL OF PATIENTS WITH SURGICALLY TREATED GLIOBLASTOMA.

Acta Clin Croat

November 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital Center, Zagreb, Croatia, Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia.

Introduction: Glioblastoma represents the most aggressive tumor of the brain with an estimated survival rate of twelve to fifteen months after the primary diagnosis. The role of neurotropic viruses in pathogenesis of the tumor has remained unclear to date. During the last two decades, many studies were conducted with the aim of confirming viral influence in the development of glioblastoma.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) canonically utilizes clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) and several other endocytic mechanisms to invade airway epithelial cells. Endocytic inhibitors, particularly those targeting CME-related proteins, have been identified as promising antiviral drugs. Currently, these inhibitors are ambiguously classified as chemical, pharmaceutical, or natural inhibitors.

Aims: Chronic diabetes complications, including diabetic nephropathy (DN), frequently result in end-stage renal failure. This study investigated empagliflozin (SGLT2i) effects on collagen synthesis, oxidative stress, cell survival, and protein expression in an LLC-PK1 model of DN. Methods: Combinations of high glucose (HG) and increasing empagliflozin concentrations (100 nM and 500 nM), as well as combinations of HG, H2O2, and empagliflozin, were used for cell culture treatment.

May 2022

Department of Animal Production and Biotechnology, Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences Osijek, University of J. J. Strossmayer Osijek, V. Preloga 1, 31000 Osijek, Croatia.

The composition and properties of the milk fat of mares' milk is interesting from a nutritional standpoint. The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional value of Lipizzaner mare's milk for possible human consumption and identity the influence of the parity and stage of lactation on its fatty acid (FA) composition. This study was conducted on 17 Lipizzaner mares from a state stud farm in the Slavonian region (eastern Croatia).

Along with the increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes, the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) incidence is escalating, thus becoming a leading cause of liver cirrhosis and a significant burden of liver-related outcomes. Since there is no pharmacotherapy available to address the NAFLD, the most effective solutions seem to be lifestyle changes centered on physical activity. Exercise could mediate its beneficial effects directly on the liver and indirectly via extrahepatic pathways, forming a dose-response relationship with NAFLD in terms of prevalence and disease severity.

Hypoglycemia limits optimal glycemic management of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Fear of hypoglycemia (FoH) is a significant psychosocial consequence that negatively impacts the willingness of T1DM patients to engage in and profit from the health benefits of regular physical activity (, cardiometabolic health, improved body composition, cardiovascular fitness, quality of life). Technological advances, improved insulin regimens, and a better understanding of the physiology of various types of exercise could help ameliorate FoH.

How far along are we in revealing the connection between metformin and colorectal cancer?

World J Gastroenterol

April 2021

Department of Medicine, Merkur University Hospital, School of Medicine, Zagreb 10000, Croatia.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most prevalent cancers worldwide, and its prevention and reduction of incidence is imperative. The presence of diabetes has been associated with a 30% increased risk of CRC, likely through the mechanism of hyperinsulinemia, which promotes tumorigenesis the insulin receptor in the epithelium or by insulin-like growth factor pathways, inflammation, or adipokines, inducing cancer cell proliferation and cancer spread. Metformin, the first-line agent in treating type 2 diabetes, has a chemopreventive role in CRC development.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a significant public health burden affecting not only obese individuals but also people with normal weight. As opposed to previous beliefs, this particular subset of patients has an increased risk of all-cause mortality and worse outcomes than their obese counterparts. The development of NAFLD in lean subjects seems to be interconnected with metabolic phenotype, precisely visceral fat tissue, sarcopenia, and insulin resistance.

Liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus (DM) are both common conditions with significant socioeconomic burden and impact on morbidity and mortality. A bidirectional relationship exists between DM and liver cirrhosis regarding both etiology and disease-related complications. Type 2 DM (T2DM) is a well-recognized risk factor for chronic liver disease and vice-versa, DM may develop as a complication of cirrhosis, irrespective of its etiology.

The change of the location of the beehives on the diverse honeyfull pastures is the usual apiarists activity in the Republic of Croatia. The main reasons are the climatic and vegetation diversity, and richness of the floral composition, with numerous bee forage plants. Our study aimed to detect consequences of honeybee broods (Queen-bee of different lineage) moving, from one habitat to another at various type of beehives.

Department of Medicine, University of J. J. Strossmayer Osijek, Clinical Hospital Osijek, Croatia.

This study examined the prevalence of depression based on scores of 200 patients with acute coronary syndrome on the Emotion Profile Index of Plutchik and its relationship with the type of acute coronary syndrome and the severity of ischemic heart disease. Patients with acute coronary syndrome scored higher on depression than the control group. There was no difference in scores on Depression by type of acute coronary syndrome and no significant mean differences on Depression for patients with and without left ventricular failure.
