Mothers who use substances during pregnancy and postpartum may have altered maternal behavior towards their infants, which can have negative consequences on infant social-emotional development. Since maternal substance use has been associated with difficulties in recognizing and responding to infant emotional expressions, investigating mothers' subjective responses to emotional infant stimuli may provide insight into the neural and psychological processes underlying these differences in maternal behavior. In this study, 39 mothers who used substances during the perinatal period and 42 mothers who did not underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while viewing infant faces and hearing infant cries.

Perinatal venous infarcts are underrecognized clinically and at imaging. Neonates may be susceptible to venous infarcts because of hypercoagulable state, compressibility of the dural sinuses and superficial veins due to patent sutures, immature cerebral venous drainage pathways, and drastic physiologic changes of the brain circulation in the perinatal period. About 43% of cases of pediatric cerebral sinovenous thrombosis occur in the neonatal period.

Despite improvements in treatment, >25% of patients with jLS have functional impairment. To improve patient evaluation, our workgroup developed the Localized scleroderma Total Severity Scale (LoTSS), an overall disease severity measure.

Prenatal adversity is associated with behavioral obesogenic features such as preference for palatable foods. Salt appetite may play a role in the development of adiposity and its consequences in individuals exposed to prenatal adversity, and sodium consumption involves individual differences in accumbal µ-opioid receptors function. We investigated the hedonic responses to salt and the levels of µ-opioid receptors and tyrosine hydroxylase in the nucleus accumbens (Nacc) of pups from an animal model of prenatal dietary restriction.

Introduction: Since the first description of os odontoideum in 1886, its origin has been debated. Numerous case series and reports show both a possible congenital origin and origin from the secondary to craniovertebral junction (CVJ) trauma. We conducted a detailed analysis of 260 surgically treated cases to document the initial symptoms, age groups, radiographic findings, and associated abnormalities, aiming to enhance the confirmation of the etiology.

Background: Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a leading cause of graft failure in pediatric heart transplant recipients (HTRs). Early statin use has been shown to reduce CAV incidence and all-cause mortality in adult HTRs. We sought to evaluate the contemporary prevalence and trends of statin use in pediatric HTRs and the association between statin use with CAV development and graft failure.

Histoplasma-mediated pericarditis is rare, and it occurs due to host-mediated inflammatory or immune response to adjacent mediastinal adenitis or pneumonitis. It is usually self-limited and rarely progresses to a disseminated infection in an immunocompetent individual. In rare instances, it can occur without pulmonary manifestations, making the diagnosis challenging given the broad list of differentials that can be considered as in our patient who initially presented with an isolated pericardial effusion with tamponade needing emergent pericardiocentesis.

PRESERVE will compare the effectiveness of alternative strategies for monitoring and treating hypertension on preserving kidney function; expand the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet) common data model by adding pediatric- and kidney-specific variables and linking electronic health record data to other kidney disease databases; and assess the lived experiences of patients related to BP management.
Study Design: Multicenter retrospective cohort study (clinical outcomes) and cross-sectional study (patient-reported outcomes [PROs]).

There are two anticonvertase antibody populations—Nephritic Factors which cause complement dysregulation and C3CAbs which do not. C3CAbs are highly prevalent in the healthy adult population (>95% prevalence). C3CAbs suggest a direction of study to determine the origin of Nephritic Factors.

Background: Our objectives were to compare safe sleep knowledge, attitudes and planned vs. actual infant sleep practices among expectant mothers before and after their infant's birth and to determine whether differences (if present) were associated with any demographic variables.
Methods: Study participants were surveyed at their 28-week prenatal and 6-week postpartum obstetric clinic visits from November 2019-February 2021.

Background: Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF) is an effective immunosuppressant used in kidney transplant recipients to prevent acute rejection. Complications such as diarrhea, leukopenia, and infections may necessitate the reduction or discontinuation of MMF. The objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence, timing, and reasons for MMF discontinuation and its association with outcomes in pediatric kidney transplant recipients.

Systems to detect and respond to deteriorating hospitalized children are common despite little evidence supporting best practices. Our objective was to describe systems to detect/respond to deteriorating hospitalized children at Pediatric Resuscitation Quality Collaborative (pediRES-Q) institutions. We performed a cross-sectional survey of pediRES-Q leaders.

Key Points: The incidence of AKI while undergoing ECMO in pediatric patients is high and independently increases mortality. Laboratory markers consistent with intravascular hemolysis increase the hazard of a composite outcome of AKI or RRT while undergoing ECMO. Further research into appropriate monitoring or treatment of ECMO-associated hemolysis may lead to important interventions to prevent AKI.

Purpose Of Review: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, systemic disease with primary cutaneous clinical manifestations and is commonly attributed to an exaggerated Th2 inflammatory response. Recent research regarding risk factors, prevention, clinical features, and management of atopic dermatitis will be reviewed.
Recent Findings: In the last decade, advances have been made in identifying the factors that either confer increased risk for or protection from atopic dermatitis and associated atopy.

Care and outcomes for the more than 40,000 patients undergoing pediatric and congenital heart surgery in the United States annually are known to vary widely. While consensus recommendations have been published across numerous fields as one mechanism to promote a high level of care delivery across centers, it has been more than two decades since the last pediatric heart surgery recommendations were published in the United States. More recent guidance is lacking, and collaborative efforts involving the many disciplines engaged in caring for these children have not been undertaken to date.

Background: Medical errors when managing inpatient paediatric patients with diabetes mellitus can lead to significant morbidity and mortality, necessitating improvement in training of medical trainees. Previous educational interventions have focused on time and resource intensive methods, restricting their applicability to teaching in time-limited scenarios. We chose a blended learning approach to create and implement a novel eBook for use by trainees and then aimed to determine the efficacy and potential barriers to that implementation.
