White matter tract integrity in isolated oral clefts: relationship to cognition and reading skills.

Children with isolated cleft of the lip and/or palate (iCL/P) have been shown to be at risk for impaired reading ability. Structural and functional neuroimaging studies have revealed subtle morphological and functional abnormalities correlated to cognition and reading ability. However, the integrity of white matter tracts and their potential relationship to reading performance in iCL/P is under-studied.

Mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders.

Recent advances in understanding the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases have expanded the opportunities for neurotherapeutics targeting mitochondria to alleviate symptoms and slow disease progression. In this review, we offer a historical account of advances in mitochondrial biology and neurodegenerative disease. Additionally, we summarize current knowledge of the normal physiology of mitochondria and the pathogenesis of mitochondrial dysfunction, the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative disease, current therapeutics and recent therapeutic advances, as well as future directions for neurotherapeutics targeting mitochondrial function.

Repeat thrombectomy after large vessel re-occlusion: a propensity score matched analysis of technical and clinical outcomes.

Background: Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) remains the standard of care for acute large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke. However, the safety and efficacy of repeat thrombectomy (rEVT) in recurrent LVO remains unclear. This study uses a large real-world patient cohort to study technical and clinical outcomes after rEVT.

Revolutionizing cancer treatment: comprehensive insights into immunotherapeutic strategies.

Cancer, characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of aberrant cells, underscores the imperative for innovative therapeutic approaches. Immunotherapy has emerged as a pivotal constituent in cancer treatment, offering improved prognostic outcomes for a substantial patient cohort. Noteworthy for its precision, immunotherapy encompasses strategies such as adoptive cell therapy and checkpoint inhibitors, orchestrating the immune system to recognize and selectively target malignant cells.

Identification of a short, single site matriglycan that maintains neuromuscular function in the mouse.

Matriglycan (-1,3-β-glucuronic acid-1,3-α-xylose-) is a polysaccharide that is synthesized on α-dystroglycan, where it functions as a high-affinity glycan receptor for extracellular proteins, such as laminin, perlecan and agrin, thus anchoring the plasma membrane to the extracellular matrix. This biological activity is closely associated with the size of matriglycan. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry and site-specific mutant mice, we show for the first time that matriglycan on the T317/T319 and T379 sites of α-dystroglycan are not identical.

A pilot study on our non-traditional, varied writing accountability group for historically excluded and underrepresented persons in STEMM.

Underrepresented faculty have higher burnout rates and lower grant attainment rates when compared with their non-minority counterparts. Many in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) disciplines, including underrepresented individuals, often have difficulty dedicating time to the writing process, with trainees often being relegated to laboratory tasks in their training years, resulting in a lack of practice in academic writing. Notably, past studies have shown that grant attainment rates of underrepresented individuals are lower than their majority counterparts.

Accuracy of patient-reported spell duration: A comparative study.

Clinicians rely heavily on patient histories to make medical diagnoses, most of which are inherently subjective and prone to inaccuracies. The aim of this study is to compare the subjective versus objective duration of spells through a retrospective chart review of patients admitted to the epilepsy monitoring unit at our tertiary care medical center. One hundred patients were analyzed.

Associations between alcohol use disorder polygenic score and remission in participants from high-risk families and the Indiana Biobank.

Background: In the United States, ~50% of individuals who meet criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD) during their lifetimes do not remit. We previously reported that a polygenic score for AUD (PGS ) was positively associated with AUD severity as measured by DSM-5 lifetime criterion count, and AUD severity was negatively associated with remission. Thus, we hypothesized that PGS would be negatively associated with remission.

Implementing a 3 year, longitudinal point of care ultrasound curriculum in an internal medicine residency program.

Purpose: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is highly utilized in the critical care setting. There is also growing evidence supporting use of POCUS by internal medicine (IM) physicians as an extension of traditional physical diagnostic skills. As part of the newly formed curriculum at our residency program, we performed pre and post curriculum assessment of the residents' ability to acquire focused cardiac, lung, pleural, abdominal and vascular images.

Circadian timing, melatonin and hippocampal volume in later-life adults.

Hippocampal atrophy is a prominent neurodegenerative feature of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Alterations in circadian rhythms can exacerbate cognitive aging and neurodegeneration. This study aimed to examine how dim light melatonin onset and melatonin levels are associated with hippocampal volume in cognitively healthy individuals.

Comprehensive analysis of the impact of procedure time and the 'golden hour' in subpopulations of stroke thrombectomy patients.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of procedure time on thrombectomy outcomes in different subpopulations of patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), given the recently expanded indications for EVT.

Methods: This multicenter study included patients undergoing EVT for acute ischemic stroke at 35 centers globally. Procedure time was defined as time from groin puncture to successful recanalization (Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score ≥2b) or abortion of procedure.

Differential response to neoadjuvant endocrine therapy for Black/African American and White women in NCDB.

Purpose: Compared to White women, there are higher mortality rates in Black/African American (BAA) women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer (HR + BC) which may be partially due to differences in treatment resistance. We assessed factors associated with response to neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET).

Methods: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried for women with clinical stage I-III HR + BC diagnosed 2006-2017 and treated with NET.

Project Strengthen: An STEMM-focused career development workshop to prepare underrepresented minority students for graduate school.

Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) programs are aimed to increase diversity in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM) fields. However, limited programs and eligibility requirements limit the students who may apply to similar programs. At Winston-Salem State University, we piloted a series of workshops, collectively termed to emulate some of the key aspects of MARC programs.

Predictors of tissue infarction from distal emboli after mechanical thrombectomy.

Background: Distal embolization after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is common. We aimed to determine factors associated with tissue infarction in the territories of distal emboli.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusions who underwent EVT from 2015 to 2021.

Combating relapsed and refractory Mantle cell lymphoma with novel therapeutic armamentarium: Recent advances and clinical prospects.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), accounting for 5% of all cases. Due to its virulence factor, it is an incurable disease and keeps relapsing despite an intensive treatment regimen. Advancements in research and drug discovery have shifted the treatment strategy from conventional chemotherapy to targeted agents and immunotherapies.

Home noninvasive ventilation use in patients hospitalized with COPD.

Introduction: The study objective was to estimate the prevalence of chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure (CHRF) and home noninvasive ventilation (NIV) use in a high-risk population, individuals with a history of at least one COPD-related hospitalizations.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed electronic medical record data of patients with at least one COPD-related hospitalization between October 1, 2011, and September 30, 2017, to the Iowa City VA Medical Center. We excluded individuals with no obstructive ventilatory defect.

IL6Myc mouse is an immunocompetent model for the development of aggressive multiple myeloma.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell neoplasm originating in the bone marrow and is the second most common blood cancer in the United States. One challenge in understanding the pathogenesis of MM and improving treatment is a lack of immunocompetent mouse models. We previously developed the IL6Myc mouse that generates plasmacytomas at 100% penetrance that phenotypically resemble aggressive MM.

Measurement of and training for NCD guideline implementation in LMICs: a scoping review protocol.

Introduction: Globally, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality with an estimated 41 million deaths (74% of all global deaths) annually. Despite the WHO's Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs since 2013, progress on implementation of the guidelines has been slow. Although research has shown success of some NCD prevention and treatment interventions, there is a dearth of research on NCD care delivery approaches, cost-effectiveness and larger implementation research, especially in low/middle-income countries (LMICs).

Feedback conversations: First things first?

Objective: This study explores medical students' perceptions regarding the order in which feedback is given and its impact on how that feedback is received.

Methods: Medical students were interviewed regarding their feedback experiences during medical school and preferred order in which to receive feedback. Thematic analysis was applied to interview transcripts to identify salient themes in students' comments related to feedback order.
