The global status of genetic counselors in 2023: What has changed in the past 5 years?

Purpose: The profession of genetic counselors has existed for over 50 years. This article provides an update on the global state of the genetic counseling (GC) profession in 2022 and 2023.

Methods: We used a survey approach to collect data from individuals who were identified as being leaders in GC practice and/or education around the world.

Perceptions of a Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Intervention for Sexual Minority Adults.

Sexual minority (SM) adults have a higher prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), largely attributable to increased exposure to minority stressors. There are no evidence-based CVD risk reduction interventions tailored to the needs of SM adults. We conducted a qualitative descriptive study to explore SM adults' perceptions and preferences for a culturally tailored, minority stress-informed intervention for CVD risk reduction.

Factors associated with eating performance in nursing home residents living with dementia and other comorbidities.

Background: Eating performance is the functional ability to get food into the mouth and chew/swallow it. Nursing home residents with dementia commonly experience compromised eating performance and subsequent consequences. Prior work examined the association between resident eating performance and their cognitive and functional ability.

These practices require gathering relevant information to infer the presence of pain and evaluate a patient's response to treatment.

Unpaid caregivers' process of collaborating with others during older adult hospital-to-home transitions: A grounded theory study.

Unpaid/family caregivers provide support critical to older adult hospital-to-home transitions, but lack time and preparation. There is limited evidence regarding important collaboration for caregivers during the transition. The objective was to examine caregivers' process of collaborating with others, including other family members, healthcare professionals, and community, social, and professional networks, during older adult hospital-to-home transitions.

A conceptual model for assessing the risk of unidentified pain.

Untreated or undertreated pain is well established as a significant problem, but unidentified pain is a distinct construct that still needs to be clearly modeled or fully described. This paper aims to develop a conceptual model of unidentified pain in humans with the goal of future development of an unidentified pain risk tool. A multi-phase process was employed consisting sequentially of 1) brainstorming followed by consensus building, 2) peer-review and publication of an integrative theoretical review protocol for "unidentified pain," 3) conduct of the integrative review, and 4) a repeated brainstorming session to identify areas of risk for unidentified pain to produce a conceptual model.

A Half-Day Camp Program for Adolescents Affected by Childhood Cancer.

Adolescents affected by childhood cancer experience various degrees of psychosocial distress, social isolation, and social support throughout the treatment process. To create and implement an evidence-based practice project consisting of a pilot half-day camp program to improve social support and connectedness for adolescents affected by childhood cancer. A pilot half-day camp program was implemented.

From maca to marijuana: cultural influences on joint pain symptoms and management in urban perimenopausal and early postmenopausal Latinas.

Objective: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the symptom experience and coping strategies for managing joint pain during the menopause transition in urban Latina women.

Methods: We conducted focus groups with 13 English-speaking peri and early postmenopausal Latinas living in Upper Manhattan in New York City in 2014. Eligible participants were self-identified Latinas aged 45 to 60 years with new onset or worsening joint pain and spontaneous amenorrhea, recruited through flyers and snowball sampling.

Assessing eating ability and mealtime behaviors of persons living with dementia: A systematic review of instruments.

This systematic review aimed to describe the characteristics of instruments that assess eating ability and/or mealtime behaviors in persons living with dementia, and evaluate their psychometric properties. Five databases were searched for relevant records between 1/1/1980 and 5/25/2023. Records included instruments assessing eating ability and/or mealtime behaviors of people with dementia.

Demystifying the virtualization process: A call for standard reporting of virtual modifications to evidence-based psychotherapies, using the FRAME model.

The sudden onset of the coronavirus disease led to a rapid expansion of video telehealth to deliver mental healthcare. Although video telehealth was not a new clinical practice, there was limited guidance on how best to modify evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for virtual delivery (a process also referred to as virtualization). The virtualization process for EBPs remains unclear as newly emerging reports on this topic do not consistently report modification decisions.

Perceptions of Responsibilities by Primary Care Staff in a Patient-Centered Medical Home.

Objective: To examine the extent to which Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Patient-Aligned Care Team (PACT) members have a shared understanding/ agreement upon and enact responsibilities within the team.

Background: The PACT model focuses on team-based care management. However, lack of a shared understanding of team-based care management roles and responsibilities makes system-wide implementation a challenge.

Sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and amyloid β among cognitively healthy later-life adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Abnormal amyloid β (Aβ) deposits in the brain are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality are risk factors for developing AD. Sleep may play a role in Aβ regulation, but the magnitude of the relationship between sleep and Aβ deposition remains unclear.

The heterogeneous wound microbiome varies with wound care pain, dressing type, and inflammatory gene expression.

Wound dressing changes are essential procedures for wound management. However, ~50% of patients experience severe pain during these procedures despite the availability of analgesic medications, indicating a need for novel therapeutics that address underlying causes of pain. Along with other clinical factors, wound pathogens and inflammatory immune responses have previously been implicated in wound pain.

Daily spiritual experiences and allostatic load trajectories: a longitudinal study of midlife African American women.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between daily spiritual experiences and allostatic load (AL) trajectories in midlife African American women.

Methods: A longitudinal analysis of public-use data from 727 African American women in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) was performed. We included African American women who completed the Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale at SWAN visit 4 (2000-2001) and had AL data at three or more study visits over 7 years.

Accordingly, this study aimed to examine domestic healthcare-related patents comprehensively. Big data analysis was used to present the trend and status of patents filed in nursing.

Prediction of Cancer Symptom Trajectory Using Longitudinal Electronic Health Record Data and Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network.

Purpose: Ability to predict symptom severity and progression across treatment trajectories would allow clinicians to provide timely intervention and treatment planning. However, such predictions are difficult because of sparse and inconsistent assessment, and simplistic measures such as the last observed symptom severity are often used. The purpose of this study is to develop a model for predicting future cancer symptom experiences on the basis of past symptom experiences.

Inappropriate Use of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters in Pediatrics: A Multisite Study.

Objectives: This study aimed to describe how the current practice of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) use in hospitalized children aligns with the Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (miniMAGIC) in Children recommendations, explore variation across sites, and describe the population of children who do not receive appropriate PICCs.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at 4 children's hospitals in the United States. Children with PICCs placed January 2019 to December 2021 were included.
