Severe mental illnesses (SMI), especially schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD), are associated with significant distress to patients, reduced life expectancy and a higher cost of care. There is growing evidence that SMI may increase the risk of dementia in later life, posing an additional challenge in the management of these patients. SMI present a complex and highly heterogeneous pathophysiology, which has hampered the understanding of its underlying pathological mechanisms and limited the success of the available therapies.

São Sebastião, 2819, Parnaíba, PI CEP 64202-020, Brazil; Research Center on Biodiversity and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), Federal University of Delta do Parnaíba, UFDPar, Parnaíba, PI CEP 64202-020, Brazil. Electronic address:

Biotechnological advancements require the physicochemical alteration of molecules to enhance their biological efficacy for the effective treatment of gastric ulcers. The study aimed to produce a polyelectrolytic compound from red angico gum (AG) by carboxymethylation, evaluate its physicochemical characteristics and investigate gastric protection against ethanol-induced ulcers. AG and carboxymethylated angico gum (CAG) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, determination of the degree of substitution and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and C NMR techniques.

The objective of the study was to characterize the adaptive profile of Ibero-American sheep of the Canaria breed, evaluating the possible changes in thermoregulatory responses and coat characteristics to which the animals are exposed in the different seasons of the year. Data collected over a period of 12 months were analyzed, with information being observed in the interval of 15 days of each month, in 23 adult ewes kept in an intensive breeding system. The rectal temperature (RT) of Canaria ewes was higher (P < 0.

Neglected tropical diseases are a diverse group of communicable pathologies that mainly prevail in tropical and subtropical regions. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the biological potential of eight 4-(4-chlorophenyl)thiazole compounds. Tests were carried out in silico to evaluate the pharmacokinetic properties, the antioxidant, cytotoxic activities in animal cells and antiparasitic activities were evaluated against the different forms of Leishmania amazonensis and Trypanosoma cruzi in vitro.

In this work, 13 thiosemicarbazones (1a - m) and 16 thiazoles (2a - p) were obtained, which were properly characterized by spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. The pharmacokinetic properties obtained in silico revealed that the derivatives are in accordance with the parameters established by lipinski and veber, showing that such compounds have good bioavailability or permeability when administered orally. In assays of antioxidant activity, thiosemicarbazones showed moderate to high antioxidant potential when compared to thiazoles.

Thiazolidine compounds NJ20 {(E)-2-(2-(5-bromo-2-methoxybenzylidene)hydrazinyl)-4-(4-nitrophenyl)thiazole} and NW05 [(2-(benzo (d) (1,3) dioxol-4-ylmethylene)-N-(4-bromophenyl)-thiosemicarbazone] potentiated the effect of norfloxacin in resistant bacteria; however, there are no reports on their effects on in the literature. The objective of this work was to evaluate the behavioral effects and oxidative markers of NW05 and NJ20 in lobster cockroach . To evaluate the behavioral study, a video tracking software was used to evaluate the locomotor points and the exploratory profile of cockroaches in the horizontal and vertical regions of a new environment.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Laboratory of Manipulation of Oocyte and Preantral Follicles (LAMOFOPA), State University of Ceará, Av. Dr. Silas Munguba, 1700, Fortaleza, CE, CEP: 60714-903, Brazil. Electronic address:

Withanolide D (WD) has been investigated as an antineoplastic drug. This study aimed to evaluate whether melatonin (MT) could attenuate toxic effects on preantral follicles enclosed in the ovarian cortex (experiment 1 - E1) or on isolated secondary follicles (experiment 2 - E2) exposed to WD. For E1, ovarian cortex was incubated for 48 h to: (1) α-MEM; (2) α-MEM plus 6 μM WD; (3) α-MEM plus 3 mmol/L MT or (4) α-MEM plus WD and MT.

Article Synopsis
  • Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder influenced by various factors, including sex, which affects onset age and symptom severity; researchers used a "two-hit" animal model to study its neurodevelopmental aspects.
  • The study revealed different inflammatory and oxidative responses between male and female mice, with males showing more proinflammatory changes, while females exhibited higher nitrite levels and lipid peroxidation.
  • Candesartan, a neuroprotective drug, effectively prevented behavioral and neurobiological changes in both sexes, highlighting its potential for further research and prevention strategies in schizophrenia.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease (NTD), endemic mainly in low-income countries that lack adequate basic health care. The emergence of resistant parasites to pentavalent antimonials has led to the search for new treatments for CL. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising non-invasive and less toxic alternative for the treatment of CL.
