The Center for Modern Chinese City Studies & Institute of Urban Development, East China Normal University, Shanghai, 200062, China.

Global warming caused by extensive carbon emissions is a critical global issue. However, the lack of county-level carbon emissions data in China hampers comprehensive research. To bridge this gap, we employ a deep learning method on nighttime light data sets to estimate county-level carbon emissions in mainland China from 1997 to 2019.

September 2024

Department of Respiratory and Critical Medicine, the Eighth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University, Shenzhen, China.

Introduction: Cigarette smoke is the main risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but 25% to 50% of cases occur in non-smokers. In the US, limited recent national data compare COPD prevalence between smokers and never smokers. Furthermore, our study seeks to explore the prevalence and mortality of self-reported COPD among smokers (including current smokers and ex-smokers) and never smokers in the US from 1999 to 2018, and to identify the risk factors and differences.

Provincial-level analysis of electrification feasibility and climate policy interactions.

Environ Sci Ecotechnol

November 2024

Laboratory for Earth Surface Processes, College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, Beijing, 100871, China.

Improving electrification feasibility is essential for reducing emissions from non-electric energy sources, thereby enhancing air quality and public health. Concurrently, climate mitigation actions, such as carbon pricing policies, have significant potential to alleviate increasing carbon dioxide (CO) and other co-emitted air pollutants. However, the interactions between climate policy and the improvement of electrification feasibility at the provincial level remain unclear, collectively impacting the net-zero transition of energy-intensive sectors.

Introduction: With the aging population, the relationship between human health and the ecological environment has gained increasing attention. In China, it is imperative to evaluate the policy effects of the Environmental Protection Tax (EPT) on improving the ecological environment and enhancing the health of middle-aged and older adult people.

Methods: This study, based on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), employs a Difference-in-Differences (DID) model to assess the health effects of the EPT policy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving rehabilitation therapy and human-computer interaction by examining motor muscle control mechanisms using optical EEG imaging technology instead of traditional EEG methods.
  • Optical EEG provides higher spatiotemporal resolution, allowing for more detailed insights into neural activity and muscle control during different motor tasks.
  • The research shows that optical EEG can accurately capture brain activity patterns related to motor muscles, offering new approaches to understanding and studying muscle control mechanisms.

Biological Sex Disparities in the Economic Burden of Tobacco Use: A Comparative Analysis between Men and Women in China.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

July 2024

School of International Trade and Economics, University of International Business and Economics, No. 10, Huixin Dongjie, Chaoyang District, Beijing 100029, China.

To examine the impact of tobacco use on the economic costs between biological sex differences, we utilized propensity score matching and human capital methods to analyze the economic costs associated with smoking. Our findings reveal a nuanced pattern in the economic burden: although men who smoke bear a higher overall economic cost, the individual impact on women who smoke is significantly more profound. As a result, there exists a distinct disparity in the distribution of economic consequences stemming from tobacco use between men and women.

Background: Graduate students exhibit vulnerability to problematic Internet use, which can result in adverse physical, psychological, and social consequences. However, limited studies have addressed this issue among graduate students, and even fewer have explored the unique factors contributing to their problematic Internet use. Therefore, to address this gap, the current study aims to probe the relationship between supervisor's neuroticism and problematic Internet use among graduate students, the mediating effect of the supervisor-student relationship quality, as well as the moderating effect of fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation.

Joint models for longitudinal and time-to-event data are receiving increasing attention owing to its capability of capturing the possible association between these two types of data. Typically, a joint model consists of a longitudinal submodel for longitudinal processes and a survival submodel for the time-to-event response, and links two submodels by common covariates that may carry both fixed and random effects. However, research gaps still remain on how to simultaneously select fixed and random effects from the two submodels under the joint modeling framework efficiently and effectively.

The restricted mean survival time (RMST) is often of direct interest in clinical studies involving censored survival outcomes. It describes the area under the survival curve from time zero to a specified time point. When data are subject to length-biased sampling, as is frequently encountered in observational cohort studies, existing methods cannot estimate the RMST for various restriction times through a single model.

Environmental regulation effect on health poverty in China.

Heliyon

July 2024

Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, USA.

How does government spending on environmental protection benefit people's health? The current paper analyzed 2010 and 2018 data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) database to measure the impact of province-level environmental regulations on the health of local population. The study also applied the Alkire Foster method to develop the multidimensional health poverty (MHP) score, a new index intended to measure the health status of individuals in a holistic manner. Our results indicated that more fiscal spending on environmental regulation could improve health of the local population, especially among low-income population living in the rural areas.

Background: There is an abundance of studies explaining the separate impact of female employment and household wealth status in reducing malnutrition. However, our study has unraveled the combined impact of maternal employment and household wealth on undernutrition among children under three in Pakistan.

Methods: Using a sample of 1093 children under three years of age from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2017-2018, a binary logistic model was employed to gauge factors influencing the children's undernutrition.

Article Synopsis
  • Natural hybridization is important for biodiversity, especially in ferns, but there's still a lack of understanding of how it works in these plants.
  • The study uses advanced genetic techniques to analyze the hybridization origins of the fern species M. matthewii and its potential parental species, looking at nuclear and chloroplast genetic markers.
  • Results indicate that M. matthewii shows a mixed genetic profile from its parent species, with significant evidence of gene flow, suggesting it is a hybrid that does not follow a 1:1 parentage ratio and exhibits complex hybridization dynamics.
