We present the case of a 61-year-old male who developed persistent hiccups concurrently with the onset of atrial fibrillation (AF). The hiccups were refractory to traditional treatment but resolved immediately upon electrical cardioversion (ECV) to normal sinus rhythm (NSR). The patient has remained in NSR and free of hiccups.

Adults with serious mental illness commonly experience comorbid chronic physical conditions and experience a reduced life expectancy of 10-25 years compared to the general population (Saha et al. in Arch Gen Psychiatry 64(10):1123-31. 2007; Hayes et al.

Surgical site infections (SSI) are an uncommon, but significant, consequence of surgical interventions. There are very few studies investigating SSI risk in veterinary medicine, and even fewer in cattle, despite the fact that major surgeries are commonly conducted on livestock. Furthermore, the suboptimal conditions under which such surgeries are frequently performed on livestock could be considered an important risk factor for the development of SSIs.

Problem: This paper argues that it is necessary to strengthen Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) community-based participatory research (CBPR) models that integrate a health policy agenda through dynamic legislative partnerships.
Purpose: We utilize a case study approach and examine three health research partnership models that impact legislative design and action: The California Program on Access to Care (CPAC), the California Health Benefits Review Program (CHBRP), and the University of California Asian American and Pacific Islander Policy Multicampus Research Program (UC AAPI Policy MRP).
Key Points: In-depth examination reveals the difficulties of engaging in research that collaborates with multiple parties simultaneously and the specific benefits and challenges in each case.

The amino acid response (AAR) pathway detects a deficiency of dietary amino acid or protein. To investigate the impact of gestational protein restriction on the AAR pathway in offspring, pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a control (C) or low protein (LP) diet during gestation. Livers of female offspring were collected on postnatal d 38.

Exposure of eukaryotic cells to viruses will activate the host NF-kappaB transcription factor, resulting in proinflammatory and immune protein production. Vaccinia virus (VV), the prototypic orthopoxvirus, expresses products that inhibit this antiviral event. To identify novel mechanisms responsible for this effect, we made use of a VV deletion mutant (MVA) that stimulates NF-kappaBeta activation in infected 293T cells.

Emotional experiences and facial muscle activity of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) (n = 13) and healthy elderly control subjects (n = 21) were measured while viewing emotion-eliciting images. Alzheimer's disease and control groups rated their emotional experiences similarly and in the expected directions on dimensions of valence and arousal. Change in corrugator activity while viewing images, compared to baseline, was comparable across groups and was greatest while viewing negative images.

Inverse scattering theory for optical coherence tomography (OCT) is developed. The results are used to produce algorithms to resolve three-dimensional object structure, taking into account the finite beam width, diffraction, and defocusing effects. The resolution normally achieved only in the focal plane of the OCT system is shown to be available for all illuminated depths in the object without moving the focal plane.

The reduction of circulating atherogenic lipoproteins through lifestyle modification and pharmacologic intervention is an important therapeutic goal in patients at risk for acute cardiovascular events. A large number of clinical trials have demonstrated that the reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is associated with significant decreases in the incidence of all cause mortality, stroke, fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction, and the need for revascularization with coronary artery bypass grafting and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Therapy with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase inhibitors (i.

The entry of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) into the cell is initiated by the interaction of the viral surface envelope protein with two cell surface components of the target cell, CD4 and a chemokine coreceptor, usually CXCR4 or CCR5. The natural ligand of CXCR4 is stromal cell-derived factor 1alpha (SDF-1alpha). Whereas the overlap between HIV-1 and SDF-1alpha functional sites on the extracellular domains of CXCR4 has been well documented, it has yet to be determined whether there are sites in the transmembrane (TM) helices of CXCR4 important for HIV-1 and/or SDF-1alpha functions, and if such sites do exist, whether they are overlapping or distinctive for the separate functions of CXCR4.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of age and diet on intestinal morphology and large bowel fermentative end-product concentrations in healthy dogs. Small intestinal villus width, height, and area, and small intestinal and colonic crypt depth were measured. Large bowel digesta samples were analyzed for ammonia, SCFAs, and branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs).

This study examined the interaction of 2 diets (high protein, reduced carbohydrates vs. low protein, high carbohydrates) with exercise on body composition and blood lipids in women (n = 48, approximately 46 y old, BMI = 33 kg/m(2)) during weight loss. The study was a 4-mo weight loss trial using a 2 x 2 block design (Diet x Exercise).

We investigated whether expertise mitigates age differences on pilot communication tasks when experts rely on environmental support. Pilots and nonpilots listened to air traffic control messages describing a route through an airspace, during which they referred to a chart of the airspace. The routes were high (waypoint routes anchored to navigational reference points on the chart) or low (vector routes that were not) in contextual support.

The purpose of this study was to explore the concerns of Latino patients with Type 2 diabetes. Focus groups were conducted with healthcare practitioners to chart their perceptions of the issues faced by their Latino patients. One group consisted of professionals working among Mexican American clients in an inner-city clinic; another group was held at an inner-city hospital serving mostly Puerto Rican Americans; and a third group involved providers practicing with more affluent, suburban Mexican Americans.

We have developed a method for the rapid isolation of hepatocyte nuclei, which employs gentle homogenization and centrifugation conditions, and involves minimal processing time. The purified nuclei were morphologically unaltered when observed by light and electron microscopy. No significant contamination from cytoplasm or mitochondria was detected when assessed by marker enzymes.
