Mechanisms by which long corticospinal axons degenerate in hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) are largely unknown. Here, we have generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from patients with two autosomal recessive forms of HSP, SPG15 and SPG48, which are caused by mutations in the ZFYVE26 and AP5Z1 genes encoding proteins in the same complex, the spastizin and AP5Z1 proteins, respectively. In patient iPSC-derived telencephalic glutamatergic and midbrain dopaminergic neurons, neurite number, length and branching are significantly reduced, recapitulating disease-specific phenotypes.

Purpose: Dental implants have been shown to have predictable success, but esthetic complications often arise. To reduce tissue shadowing from titanium, zirconia abutments may be used; however, the literature suggests that the use of zirconia leads to greater destruction of the implant interface that may result in biological complications such as titanium tattoos and heavy metal toxicity. Previous studies have examined the mechanical aspects of this implant/abutment relationship, but they have not accounted for the corrosive degradation that also takes place in the dynamic environment of the oral cavity.

Patients with shoulder pain are commonly seen in adult primary care, and are typically referred to musculoskeletal specialists when their symptoms are persistent. Rotator cuff disorders (RCD) most commonly underlie non-traumatic shoulder pain in adults, and glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) has been considered to be relatively uncommon (Nakagawa et al., J Shoulder Elb Surg 8:580-584, 1999).

Regenerative Medicine and Disability Research Lab, Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, IL, USA; Department of Orthopedics, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL, USA; Department of Bioengineering, University of Illinois at Chicago, IL, USA. Electronic address:

Despite the technological improvements in orthopedic joint replacement implants, wear and corrosion products associated with the metal components of these implants may result in adverse local tissue and perhaps systemic reactions and toxicities. The current review encompasses a literature review of the local and systemic toxicity studies concerning the effect of CoCrMo wear debris released from wear and corrosion of orthopedic implants and prostheses. Release of metallic debris is mainly in the form of micro- and nano-particles, ions of different valences, and oxides composed of Co and Cr.

Objective: Multiple studies have shown that gut microbes contribute to atherosclerosis, and there is mounting evidence that microbial metabolism of dietary nutrients influences pathophysiology. We hypothesized that indole- and phenyl-derived metabolites that originate solely or in part from bacterial sources would differ between patients with advanced atherosclerosis and age- and sex-matched controls without clinically apparent atherosclerosis.

Methods: Plasma from the advanced atherosclerosis cohort (n = 100) was from patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy, open infrainguinal leg revascularization, or major leg amputation for critical limb ischemia.

T-oligo, a guanine-rich oligonucleotide homologous to the 3'-telomeric overhang of telomeres, elicits potent DNA-damage responses in melanoma cells; however, its mechanism of action is largely unknown. Guanine-rich oligonucleotides can form G-quadruplexes (G4), which are stabilized by the hydrogen bonding of guanine residues. In this study, we confirmed the G4-forming capabilities of T-oligo using nondenaturing PAGE, nuclear magnetic resonance, and immunofluorescence.

Article Synopsis
  • Current bowel prep for colonoscopies typically involves a clear liquid diet (CLD) and large laxative volumes, which can discourage patients from scheduling screenings.
  • A study comparing low-residue diet (LRD) and CLD with a split dose magnesium citrate showed no significant difference in preparation quality but higher satisfaction in the LRD group.
  • The findings suggest LRD is a better dietary option for patients undergoing colonoscopies, as it improves satisfaction without compromising preparation quality.
