Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how adding extra implants to mandibular overdentures affects oral health and patient satisfaction among edentulous patients.
  • Patients were split into two groups: one received a standard overdenture with two implants, while the other received an overdenture with two additional short implants for greater anchorage.
  • Results showed that while the extra implants did provide some benefits, they did not significantly improve overall patient satisfaction or quality of life compared to the standard implant setup.

Current global status of male reproductive health.

Hum Reprod Open

April 2024

Instituto de Biología y Medicina Experimental, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de Argentina-Fundación IBYME, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Background: The widespread interest in male reproductive health (MRH), fueled by emerging evidence, such as the global decline in sperm counts, has intensified concerns about the status of MRH. Consequently, there is a pressing requirement for a strategic, systematic approach to identifying critical questions, collecting pertinent information, and utilizing these data to develop evidence-based strategies. The methods for addressing these questions and the pathways toward their answers will inevitably vary based on the variations in cultural, geopolitical, and health-related contexts.

Neurotrophic keratopathy is an uncommon degenerative corneal disorder characterized by compromised corneal sensory innervation resulting in the formation of epithelial defects and nonhealing corneal ulcers. Various treatment modalities are available to stabilize disease progression, improve patient well-being, and prevent vision loss. For eligible patients, medical and surgical reinnervation have emerged as pioneering therapies, holding promise for better management.

Background: The Viral Hepatitis National Strategic Plan emphasizes the importance of a collaborative provider workforce trained in hepatitis prevention and treatment to eliminate viral hepatitis in the United States by 2030. Although pharmacists play a key role in hepatitis management, literature lacks documentation of the amount of viral hepatitis education provided to pharmacy students.

Aim: Our study goal was to describe viral hepatitis education provided at United States pharmacy schools.

Introduction: Fifteen states participating in the Opioid Use Disorder, Maternal Outcomes, and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Initiative Learning Community (OMNI LC) developed action plan goals and activities to address the rise in opioid use disorder (OUD) among birthing persons. In a separate initiative, Perinatal Quality Collaboratives (PQCs) from 12 states participating in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-supported activities hosted trainings to improve the provision of OUD services and implement protocols for screening and treatment in delivery facilities.

Methods: This descriptive study synthesizes qualitative data extracted from 15 OMNI LC state action plans, excerpts from qualitative interviews conducted with OMNI LC state teams, and quantitative data from quarterly project performance monitoring reports from 12 CDC-funded PQCs implementing quality improvement activities to address clinical service gaps for pregnant and postpartum people with OUD.

Epigenetic regulation of metabotropic glutamate 2/3 receptors: Potential role for ultra-resistant schizophrenia?

Pharmacol Biochem Behav

August 2023

The Psychiatric Institute, Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Chicago, IL, USA. Electronic address:

Schizophrenia is a severe and debilitating psychiatric disorder characterized by early cognitive deficits, emotional and behavioral abnormalities resulted by a dysfunctional gene x environment interaction. Genetic and epigenetic abnormalities in cortical parvalbumin-positive GABAergic interneurons lead to alterations in glutamate-mediated excitatory neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, and neuronal development. Epigenetic alterations during pregnancy or early phases of postnatal life are associated with schizophrenia vulnerability as well as inflammatory processes which are at the basis of brain pathology.

Functional Nutrition as Integrated Intervention for In- and Outpatient with Schizophrenia.

The Psychiatric Institute, Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Chicago, IL, USA.

Schizophrenia is a chronic and progressive disorder characterized by cognitive, emotional, and behavioral abnormalities associated with neuronal development and synaptic plasticity alterations. Genetic and epigenetic abnormalities in cortical parvalbumin-positive GABAergic interneurons and consequent alterations in glutamate-mediated excitatory neurotransmission during early neurodevelopment underlie schizophrenia manifestation and progression. Also, epigenetic alterations during pregnancy or early phases of postnatal life are associated with schizophrenia vulnerability and inflammatory processes, which are at the basis of brain pathology and a higher risk of comorbidities, including cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Increase Compliance With Spontaneous Awakening Trials and Spontaneous Breathing Trials in the Medical Intensive Care Unit.

Crit Care Nurs Q

February 2023

Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois (Dr Jones); Adult Gerontology Acute Care DNP Program (Dr Jones) and Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing (Dr Shivji), Rush University College of Nursing, Chicago, Illinois; and The University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois (Dr Shivji) Dr Jones is now at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Chicago, Illinois.

Prolonged mechanical ventilation can lead to undesirable outcomes, including reduced 6-month survival, increased hospital mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and physiological stress. A large academic medical center currently has a Spontaneous Awakening Trials/Spontaneous Breathing Trials (SAT/SBT) protocol with an SAT/SBT compliance goal of 80%; however, the medical intensive care unit's (MICU) SAT/SBT compliance rate was only 33% for FY2020. The Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) framework was used to guide this quality improvement project.

Background: Among all racial/ethnic groups, people who identify as African American/Blacks have the second highest colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence in the USA. This disparity may exist because African American/Blacks, compared to other racial/ethnic groups, have a higher prevalence of risk factors for CRC, including obesity, low fiber consumption, and higher intakes of fat and animal protein. One unexplored, underlying mechanism of this relationship is the bile acid-gut microbiome axis.

Radiation damage is associated with inflammation and immunity in the intestinal mucosa, including gut microbiota. Melanin has a unique capacity to coordinate a biological reaction in response to environmental stimuli, such as radiation exposure. Thus, melanin and melanized microbes have potential to be used for mitigation of injury induced by radiation.

Membrane lipids control the cellular activity of kinases containing the Src homology 2 (SH2) domain through direct lipid-SH2 domain interactions. Here we report development of new nonlipidic small molecule inhibitors of the lipid-SH2 domain interaction that block the cellular activity of their host proteins. As a pilot study, we evaluated the efficacy of lipid-SH2 domain interaction inhibitors for spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk), which is implicated in hematopoietic malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Purpose: Corneal nerves comprise the densest sensory network in the body. Dysfunction of the corneal cold sensitive neurons (CSN) is implicated in ophthalmic disorders, including Dry Eye Disease, the most common ocular surface disorder. The preservative Benzalkonium chloride (BAK) and the mydriatic agent Phenylephrine hydrochloride (PHE) are considered to be inactive at the level of the CSNs.

Environments that make it easier for people to incorporate physical activity into their daily life may help to reduce high rates of cardiometabolic conditions. Local zoning codes are a policy and planning tool to create more walkable and bikeable environments. This study evaluated relationships between active living-oriented zoning code environments and cardiometabolic conditions (body mass index, hyperlipidemia, hypertension).
