Objectives: Economical, operational, and employment strains present challenges for widespread implementation of parent-directed interventions. We designed Sit Down and Play (SDP) with the aim of creating a brief primary care-based program that encourages positive parenting practices through take-home play activities. To develop a sustainable model of implementation in real-world settings, we explored the use of university student volunteers as a potential solution for employment strains.

Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is the second most common congenital craniofacial malformation characterized by asymmetric malformation of the ear and mandible. Numerous studies have reported the importance of child perspective and psychosocial issues in patients with craniofacial abnormalities. However, clinical tools to evaluate child and caregiver perspectives in patients with microtia with or without CFM have been limited or not reported in the literature.

Behavioral studies consistently find that subjects move their hand along straight paths despite considerations that suggest reaches should be curved. Literature on this topic makes it clear that the experimentally displayed feedback influences how subjects reach. Could the standard visual feedback, a displayed cursor, explain the lack of path curvature in experimental results? To address this question, we conducted three experiments to examine reach behavior in the absence of the standard visual feedback.

Background: Previously, we reported a significantly higher prevalence of uterine fibroids (UFs) in African American women. This minority group also commonly suffers from vitamin D deficiency. We have demonstrated that 1,25(OH)D attains a fibroid growth inhibitory impact through its ability to block the G1/S (gap 1/synthesis) phase of the cell cycle.

Mammography screening is a profit-driven technology posing risks compounded by unreliability. In striking contrast, annual clinical breast examination (CBE) by a trained health professional, together with monthly breast self-examination (BSE), is safe, at least as effective, and low in cost. International programs for training nurses how to perform CBE and teach BSE are critical and overdue.

The associations among timing of maternal-fetal human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission, infant age at first positive HIV culture, and CD8+ lymphocyte activation were examined for 74 perinatally infected infants. Nineteen of the infected infants had positive HIV cultures at < or =7 days of life, and 55 had negative HIV cultures at < or =7 days but were positive later. Of the infants with early positive HIV-1 cultures, 15 of the 17 tested with DNA polymerase chain reaction methods had concordant results.
