Purpose Of Review: The present review discusses the neurological complications associated with myocarditis of different etiologies.
Recent Findings: Myocarditis can be idiopathic or caused by different conditions, including toxins, infections, or inflammatory diseases. Clinical findings are variable and range from mild self-limited shortness of breath or chest pain to hemodynamic instability which may result in cardiogenic shock and death.

We determined which educational and/or psychological interventions were most effective in atopic dermatitis (AD). A systematic review of published studies evaluated the effectiveness of educational and/or psychological interventions in MEDLINE, Embase, SCOPUS, LILACS, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Taiwan Electronic Periodical Services, and CiNii. Two reviewers conducted title/abstract, full-text review, and data extraction.

Protein functional effector sncRNAs (pfeRNAs) are approximately 30-60 nucleotides (nt), of which the extraction method from plasma has not yet been reported. Silver staining in a high-resolution polyacrylamide gel suggested that the majority of plasma sncRNAs extracted by some broadly used commercial kits were sncRNAs from 100 nt upwards. Additionally, TRIzol's protocol is for long RNA but not sncRNA recovery.

Plasminogen activator inhibitor type-2 (PAI-2), a member of the serpin family, is dramatically upregulated during pregnancy and in response to inflammation. Although PAI-2 exists in glycosylated and non-glycosylated forms in vivo, the majority of in vitro studies of PAI-2 have exclusively involved the intracellular non-glycosylated form. This study shows that exposure to inflammation-associated hypochlorite induces the oligomerisation of PAI-2 via a mechanism involving dityrosine formation.

Background: This study describes medical malpractice claims from a large academic family medicine department over 20 years. The intent of this investigation is to analyze trends within the department, seeking to better understand how to improve the quality of patient care.
Study Design: The Office of Patient Relations and Clinical Risk (PRCR) at University of Michigan Health maintains a centralized database of family medicine malpractice claims dating back to 1987.

Background: Identifying Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) phenotypes among middle-aged and older Hispanics/Latinos can facilitate personalized care, better inform treatment decisions, and could lead to improved clinical outcomes.
Methods: We focused on middle-aged and older adults (ages ≥45-74 years at baseline) with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥5 from the HCHS/SOL (2008-2011) (unweighted n = 3,545). We used latent class analyses (LCA) to identify empirical and clinically meaningful OSA phenotypes.

Long-term impairment in T cell-mediated adaptive immunity is a major clinical obstacle following treatment of blood disorders with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Although T cell development in the thymus has been extensively characterized, there are significant gaps in our understanding of prethymic processes that influence early T cell potential. We have uncovered a Notch/IL-21 signaling axis in bone marrow common lymphoid progenitor (CLP) cells.

Objectives: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) accounts for 5% of strokes but results in significant morbidity and mortality. In addition to systemic inflammation, up to half of patients develop cardiac injury; however, the relationship between systemic inflammation and cardiac injury after aSAH is unknown. We investigated changes in leukocyte counts in relation to cardiac dysfunction MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records of consecutive patients with SAH at our large academic medical referral center.

We present the case of a breast-fed preterm infant with postnatally acquired cytomegalovirus (CMV) and severe necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) associated with CMV. The infant had persistent severe thrombocytopenia with clinical deterioration despite multiple platelet transfusions and maximal medical treatment. Surgical intervention was not feasible owing to the instability of the infant's condition.

Objective: Anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a highly successful procedure to treat spinal cord or nerve root compression; however, complications can still occur. With advancements in imaging, 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction allows real-time instrument tracking in a surgical field relative to the patient's anatomy. Here, we compare plate positioning and short-term outcomes when using 3D navigation to fluoroscopy in ACDF for degenerative spine disease.

An ovine iliac vein thrombosis model was devised to test a wall-contacting rotational thrombectomy device. Thrombosis was successfully induced in 9 sheep with an average clot length of 31 mm ± 12 and >60% vessel occlusion on angiography. The thrombus was subsequently removed, maintaining normal intraoperative pulmonary arterial pressure (5.

Dual-specificity tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1 A (DYRK1A) is a serine/threonine kinase that belongs to the DYRK family of proteins, a subgroup of the evolutionarily conserved CMGC protein kinase superfamily. Due to its localization on chromosome 21, the biological significance of DYRK1A was initially characterized in the pathogenesis of Down syndrome (DS) and related neurodegenerative diseases. However, increasing evidence has demonstrated a prominent role in cancer through its ability to regulate biologic processes including cell cycle progression, DNA damage repair, transcription, ubiquitination, tyrosine kinase activity, and cancer stem cell maintenance.

Despite dramatic advancements in neonatal intensive care since the 1960s, African-American infants still have more than a two-fold higher first-year mortality rate than non-Latinx White infants. Our essay examines the impact of upstream factors closely linked to the historical and contemporary context of structural racism in the United States on the African-American women's birth outcome disadvantage. In the process, we propose a paradigm to address the racial health inequity in adverse birth outcome by considering the interplay of racism and social class.

In people with sickle cell disease (SCD), oral abscesses are concerning clinical conditions and carry a high risk of postoperative sickle cell complications. We present an unusual case of a 14-year-old girl with SCD whose initial presentation of facial swelling, headaches, jaw pain, and paresthesia mimicked an odontogenic abscess. She was diagnosed with vaso-occlusive crisis in the mandibular bone and successfully managed noninvasively.

Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to describe the increased fragility of anterior capsule in patients with the rare genetic disease Marshall-Stickler syndrome.
Observations: We describe a 3-year old patient with Marshall-Stickler Syndrome and congenital glaucoma treated with glaucoma drainage implant placement who subsequently developed spontaneous lens resorption in one eye, which was noted incidentally during one follow-up appointment.
Conclusions And Importance: It is hypothesized that the lens material left the eye through the glaucoma drainage implant over time.

Prior research has shown that urine of women with preeclampsia (PE) contains amyloid-like aggregates that are congophilic (exhibit affinity for the amyloidophilic dye Congo red) and immunoreactive with A11, a polyclonal serum against prefibrillar β-amyloid oligomers, thereby supporting pathogenic similarity between PE and protein conformational disorders such as Alzheimer's and prion disease. The objective of this study was to interrogate PE urine using monoclonal antibodies with previously characterized A11-like epitopes. Over 100 conformation-dependent monoclonals were screened and three (mA11-09, mA11-89, and mA11-205) selected for further confirmation in 196 urine samples grouped as follows: severe features PE (sPE, n = 114), PE without severe features (mPE, n = 30), chronic hypertension (crHTN, n = 14) and normotensive pregnant control (P-CRL, n = 38).

Background And Objectives: Current guidelines recommend the use of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) plus IV thrombolysis (aka bridging therapy [BT]) for patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke. However, clinical equipoise exists in relation to the use of BT vs MT alone. Our objective is to compare the efficacy and safety of BT and MT for anterior circulation LVO.
