Department of Orthopaedics, The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, Chicago, IL, USA.
Total shoulder arthroplasty is an increasingly popular option for the treatment of glenohumeral arthritis. Historically, the effectiveness of the procedure has largely been determined by the long-term stability of the glenoid component. Glenoid component loosening can lead to clinically concerning complications including pain with movement, loss of function, and accumulation of debris which may require surgery to revise.

Background: Albuminuria is associated with metabolic abnormalities, but these relationships are not well understood. We studied the association of metabolites with albuminuria in Hispanic/Latino people, a population with high risk for metabolic disease.
Methods: We used data from 3736 participants from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, of which 16% had diabetes and 9% had an increased urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR).
Medically unexplained dermatologic symptoms, such as pruritus, numbness and burning are known as somatization. These cutaneous symptoms can be very difficult to treat because of an absence of an objective explanation and they may not fit neatly into any known dermatological or psychiatric condition. These disorders are more commonly encountered in primary care and in dermatology, rather than in psychiatry.

Various signals in tissue microenvironments are often unevenly distributed around cells. Cellular responses to asymmetric cell-matrix adhesion in a 3D space remain generally unclear and are to be studied at the single-cell resolution. Here, the authors developed a droplet-based microfluidic approach to manufacture a pure population of single cells in a microscale layer of compartmentalized 3D hydrogel matrices with a tunable spatial presentation of ligands at the subcellular level.

Background: Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) is a form of cyclic vomiting syndrome characterized by episodic vomiting occurring every few weeks or months and is associated with prolonged and frequent use of high-dose cannabis. CHS in the pediatric population has been increasingly reported over the last decade and can lead to life-threatening complications such as pneumomediastinum, which warrant careful consideration for surgical intervention.
Case Presentation: A 17-year-old female with no significant past medical history presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting for 24 hours.

Pulmonary hypertension may be idiopathic or related to a large variety of diseases. Various imaging examinations may be helpful in diagnosing and determining the etiology of pulmonary hypertension. Imaging examinations discussed in this document include chest radiography, ultrasound echocardiography, ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy, CT, MRI, right heart catheterization, and pulmonary angiography.

Background: Primary rhinoplasty (PR)at the time of cleft lip repair is controversial. We previously performed a systematic review that supported PR during unilateral cleft lip repair. We now aim to determine whether the same idea translates to care of patients with bilateral cleft lip.

Chloride intracellular channels (CLICs) are conserved proteins for which the cellular and molecular functions remain mysterious. An important insight into CLIC function came from the discovery that Caenorhabditis elegans EXC-4/CLIC regulates morphogenesis of the excretory canal (ExCa) cell, a single-cell tube. Subsequent work showed that mammalian CLICs regulate vascular development and angiogenesis, and human CLIC1 can rescue exc-4 mutants, suggesting conserved function in biological tube formation (tubulogenesis) and maintenance.

Introduction: In sarcoidosis, peripheral lymphopenia and anergy have been associated with increased inflammation and maladaptive immune activity, likely promoting development of chronic and progressive disease. However, the molecular mechanisms that lead to reduced lymphocyte proportions, particularly CD4+ T-cells, have not been fully elucidated. We posit that paradoxical peripheral lymphopenia is characterized by a dysregulated transcriptomic network associated with cell function and fate that results from altered transcription factor targeting activity.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is stressful to both pediatric patients and their caregivers. Maternal anxiety during pregnancy is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. After birth, a prolonged hospital stay can be taxing on the infant and caregiver leading to long-term adverse effects.

Purpose: Clinical trials in uveitis have led to the expansion of therapeutic options for the management of non-infectious uveitis. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate why some clinical trials have yielded successful results and regulatory approval of new therapies, and some have not.
Methods: A systematic literature search of the Pubmed/MEDLINE database and clinicaltrials.

This article seeks to provide an exploration of the contributors to the mental health of Black and African Americans. We explore the foundations of racism in this country as well as factors leading to systemic racism. It is important to gain an understanding of the multifaceted contributors to disparities in health care and mental health care.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with anxiety and depression. Although the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased stressors on patients with CKD, assessments of anxiety and its predictors and consequences on behaviors, specifically virus mitigation behaviors, are lacking.
Methods: From June to October 2020, we administered a survey to 1873 patients in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study, asking participants about anxiety related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Troponin T (TnT) is the thin filament anchoring subunit of troponin complex and plays an organizer role in the Ca-regulation of striated muscle contraction. From an ancestral gene emerged ~ 700 million years ago in Bilateria, three homologous genes have evolved in vertebrates to encode muscle type-specific isoforms of TnT. Alternative splicing variants of TnT are present in vertebrate and invertebrate muscles to add functional diversity.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) attributed to diabetes occurs in 20%-40% of patients with diabetes mellitus. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is recognized as the most common cause of end-stage kidney disease in the USA and most Western countries. For quite some time, it has been recognized that treatments based on inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) can reduce the rates of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with DKD.

African American women are at greater risk for cervical cancer incidence and mortality than White women. Up to 90% of cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPVs) infections. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) co-developed HPV self-test kits to increase access to screening, which may be critical for underserved populations.

Proteinuria is a major manifestation of kidney disease, reflecting injuries of glomerular podocytes. Actin cytoskeleton plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the foot processes of podocytes against the hydrostatic pressure of filtration. Calponin is an actin associated protein that regulates mechanical tension-related cytoskeleton functions and its role in podocytes has not been established.

Objective: Previous studies identified risk factors for ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) after cardiac surgery; however, there is no easy-to-use risk calculator for the physician to identify high-risk patients for ION before cardiac surgery. The authors sought to develop and validate a simple-to-use predictive model and calculator to assist with preoperative identification of risk and informed consent for this rare but serious complication.
Design: Retrospective case-control study.
