The female reproductive tract is a highly complex physiological system that consists of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina. An enhanced understanding of the molecular, cellular, and genetic mechanisms of the tract will allow for the development of more effective assisted reproductive technologies, therapeutics, and screening strategies for female specific disorders. Traditional 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional static culture systems may not always reflect the cellular and physical contexts or physicochemical microenvironment necessary to understand the dynamic exchange that is crucial for the functioning of the reproductive system.

This study examined differences in male-perpetrated adult sexual assault experiences among women of various sexual orientations using a large urban convenience sample (N = 1,022). Results showed many similarities in disclosure to others, perceived helpfulness, and attributions of blame, but there were also differences by sexual orientation. Heterosexual women were more likely to experience completed sexual assault than lesbian or bisexual women.

We previously determined the solution structures of the first 156 residues of human erythroid alpha-spectrin (SpalphaI-1-156, or simply Spalpha). Spalpha consists of the tetramerization site of alpha-spectrin and associates with a model beta-spectrin protein (Spbeta) with an affinity similar to that of native alpha- and beta-spectrin. Upon alphabeta-complex formation, our previous results indicate that there is an increase in helicity in the complex, suggesting conformational change in either Spalpha or Spbeta or in both.

Advances in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques enable the accurate measurements of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow in the human brain. In addition, image reconstruction tools facilitate the collection of patient-specific brain geometry data such as the exact dimensions of the ventricular and subarachnoidal spaces (SAS) as well as the computer-aided reconstruction of the CSF-filled spaces. The solution of the conservation of CSF mass and momentum balances over a finite computational mesh obtained from the MR images predict the patients' CSF flow and pressure field.

Objectives: As phase 3 of a study to evaluate a smoking cessation program in public health practice, the authors assess the maintenance and impact of the It's Time smoking cessation program in seven public maternal and child health clinics in Chicago.

Methods: The authors interviewed 404 clinic patients in the study's baseline phase (prior to introduction of the It's Time intervention program), and 610 in the program maintenance phase (in the year after experimental evaluation had ended) to assess exposure to smoking cessation interventions offered at the clinic, and smoking cessation outcomes (quit, actions toward quitting, scores on action, motivation, readiness, and confidence scales). The authors controlled for clustering of smokers within clinics, smokers' characteristics prior to clinic visit, and type of clinic service.

Pump-and-treat strategies employed to contain contaminant plumes have been demonstrated to be inefficient, and often ineffective, for remediation of aquifers contaminated by nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). This has prompted the development of alternative technologies to provide enhanced remediation of NAPL source zones. The results reported here are from a solubilization study wherein the objective was to achieve high NAPL remediation efficiencies using a low concentration of chemical additives in the flushing solution.

A method is described for construction of an in vitro flow model based on in vivo measurements of the lumen geometry of the human carotid bifurcation. A large-scale physical model of the vessel lumen was constructed using fused deposition modeling (a rapid prototyping technique) based on magnetic resonance (MR) images of the carotid bifurcation acquired in a healthy volunteer. The lumen negative was then used to construct a flow model for experimental studies that examined the hemodynamic environment of subject-specific geometry and flow conditions.

This paper reports on the effectiveness of an integrated comprehensive school model for character development, problem behavior prevention, and academic achievement enhancement. The Positive Action program consists of a school curriculum, together with schoolwide climate, family, and community components. As evaluated here, the yearly K-6 curriculum consists of over 140 fifteen-to-twenty-minute lessons per year delivered in school classrooms on an almost daily basis.

Welfare reform is likely to have a profound effect on the lives of poor women who are being abused. This article proposes exchange theory and the feminist "backlash hypothesis" as frameworks with which to assess the impact of welfare reform on violence levels in abusive relationships. Exchange theory suggests that if a woman leaves welfare and obtains employment that increases her economic resources, violence against her will decrease.

Many anticancer drugs inhibit DNA replication. To investigate the mechanism of permanent growth inhibition after transient arrest of DNA replication, we selected genetic suppressor elements (GSEs) conferring resistance to replication inhibitor Aphidicolin. Starting from a retroviral expression library carrying normalized fragments of human cell cDNA, we isolated four GSEs which, when introduced as a combination, produced resistance to Aphidicolin, doxorubicin and hydroxyurea in HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells.

A field investigation of 337 employees and their immediate superiors tested the mediating role of empowerment in relations between job characteristics, leader-member exchange (LMX), team-member exchange (TMX), and work outcomes. The meaning and competence dimensions of empowerment mediated the relation between job characteristics and work satisfaction. The meaning dimension also mediated the relation between job characteristics and organizational commitment.

This article describes selection criteria based on theory, research, and best educational practice that identify key social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies and program features. The SEL competencies for students include 17 skills and attitudes organized into four groups: awareness of self and others; positive attitudes and values; responsible decision making; and social interaction skills.
