Microscale deformation processes, such as reorientation, buckling, and sliding of collagen fibrils, determine the mechanical behavior and function of collagenous tissue. While changes in the structure and composition of tendon have been extensively studied, the deformation mechanisms that modulate the interaction of extracellular matrix (ECM) constituents are not well understood, partly due to the lack of appropriate techniques to probe the behavior. In particular, the role of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in modulating collagen fibril interactions has remained controversial.

The spatial arrangement and interactions of the extracellular matrix (ECM) components control the mechanical behavior of tissue at multiple length scales. Changes in microscale deformation mechanisms affect tissue function and are often hallmarks of remodeling and disease. Despite their importance, the deformation mechanisms that modulate the mechanical behavior of collagenous tissue, particularly in indentation and compression modes of deformation, remain poorly understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Access to safe and dignified maternity care is a basic right, yet systemic racism in the U.S. health care system disproportionately affects Black women, leading to significant maternal health disparities.
  • The article introduces a new model called Melanated Group Midwifery Care (MGMC), which was developed with input from the community to better meet the needs of Black women through culturally aware practices.
  • MGMC encompasses four key components: racial concordance in care, group prenatal sessions, perinatal nurse navigation, and extensive postpartum support, all aimed at building trust in the health care system and improving overall outcomes for Black pregnant and postpartum individuals.

The cervix acts as a dynamic barrier between the uterus and vagina, retaining the fetus during pregnancy and allowing birth at term. Critical to this function, the physical properties of the cervix change, or remodel, but abnormal remodeling can lead to preterm birth (PTB). Although cervical remodeling has been studied, the complex 3D cervical microstructure has not been well-characterized.

The structural and mechanical properties of tissue and the interplay between them play a critical role in tissue function. We introduce the optomechanogram, a combined quantitative and qualitative visualization of spatially co-registered measurements of the microstructural and micromechanical properties of any tissue. Our approach relies on the co-registration of two independent platforms, second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy for quantitative assessment of 3D collagen-fiber microstructural organization, and nanoindentation (NI) for local micromechanical properties.

Over the past 25 years, the roles of school nurses have been both expanding and specializing in public and non-public school settings. To help meet the ever-changing and demanding challenges that specialized school nurses encounter in their unique settings, NASN embraced the idea that school nurses need a way to connect with colleagues working in similar practices. Thus, special interest groups (SIGs) were established, and the SIGs have become an integral part of NASN.

Patient Satisfaction with Pain Level in Patients with Cancer.

Pain Manag Nurs

June 2016

University of Illinois College of Nursing, Chicago, Illinois; College of Nursing, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. Electronic address:

Interest in satisfaction with pain management as a pain-related outcome variable wavered when investigators found poor correlations with pain intensity when they measured satisfaction with pain management rather than satisfaction with pain level. The aim was to explore the relationship between satisfaction with pain level and pain intensity among patients receiving ongoing outpatient cancer care. In a comparative, secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional sample of 806 cancer patients (57% male, mean age 56 ± 13 years, 77% Caucasian), the authors measured satisfaction with pain level as a single item (yes, no, not sure) and pain intensity as an average of current, least, and worst pain intensity (all 0-10 scales) in the past 24 hours.

Substance use among older adults is on the rise, with statistics indicating this to be a growing health problem. Brain changes in the reward center of the brain that naturally occur with aging are offered as one source of these statistics. Aging is generally associated with increased prevalence of chronic disease, disability, and death, and therefore a public health goal for older adults is to maintain health, independence, and function.
