Background: Explicit funding and industry affiliation are believed to potentially impact medical research. There have been an increasing number of studies that have evaluated this relationship. The purpose of this study is to determine whether industry affiliation influences the outcomes of randomized controlled trials that investigate the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis.

Cytokine storm in a massively burned pediatric patient.

Cytokine storm can occur in many different clinical conditions and lack of recognition can lead to death. While cytokines have been measured and trended in burn patients, cytokine storm has not been widely discussed or its treatment reported. We present herein the diagnosis and the treatment of a 5-year-old, 91% burn patient, who developed cytokine storm three times during his hospital course.

Comparison of Postoperative Strength Progression and Outcomes Following Primary Versus Secondary ACL Reconstruction in the Young Athlete.

Background: Return to sport testing after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is becoming increasingly popular. Anecdotally, some believe that patients who undergo a second ACL surgery on either the ipsilateral or contralateral leg progress through their rehabilitation goals faster the second time through. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rate of strength progression in return to sport testing after primary and secondary ACLR surgeries in a young, active population.

Safety of pre-operative venogram for hemodialysis access planning in pre-end-stage kidney disease patients.

Background: Although conventional pre-operative venography can accurately delineate venous anatomy as an alternative to ultrasound for hemodialysis access planning, it may carry a risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and progression of renal failure in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients not yet on dialysis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of pre-operative venograms in pre-end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study (2018-2022) of consecutive pre-ESKD patients who underwent staged bilateral venograms for preoperative vein mapping prior to hemodialysis access creation at a tertiary care medical center.

Dysregulated mRNA translation is pervasive in cancer, in which protein synthesis is elevated to support accelerated cell growth and proliferation. Consequently, targeting the mRNA translation machinery has emerged as a therapeutic strategy to treat cancer.

A case study: exploring the impact of 3D printed models on cognitive integration during clinical skills training.

Background: Cognitive integration occurs when trainees make conceptual connections between relevant knowledges and is known to improve learning. While several experimental studies have demonstrated how text and audio-visual instruction can be designed to enhance cognitive integration, clinical skills training in real-world contexts may require alternative educational strategies. Introducing three-dimensional (3D) printed models during clinical skills instruction may offer unique learning opportunities to support cognitive integration.

Importance: Literature suggests that well-being and health status differ by generational status among Asian American individuals.

Objective: To compare young children's well-being and health behaviors and their parents' parenting practices among families of second-generation Asian American, third- or later-generation Asian American, and third- or later-generation non-Hispanic White children in the US.

Design, Setting, And Participants: For this survey study, secondary data analysis was conducted from September 2, 2023, to June 19, 2024, using data from the 2018 to 2022 National Survey of Children's Health participants aged 6 months to 5 years.

Background: Identifying non-accidental trauma (NAT) in pediatric trauma patients is challenging. We developed a machine learning model that uses demographic characteristics and ICD10 codes to detect the first diagnosis of NAT.

Methods: We analyzed data from the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (2015-2020) for patients aged 0-19 years.

Background: Histoplasmosis is the most prevalent endemic mycosis in the United States, typically affecting immunocompromised individuals. Diagnosis of histoplasmosis in immunocompetent patients is rare, particularly among young infants, with only a few cases reported.

Case Presentation: We present a 4-month-old female with a history of prematurity who initially presented with 11 days of fever.

Introduction: Changes in up-to-date cervical cancer screening (CCS) over time by sexual orientation and race/ethnicity were estimated to identify trends in screening disparities.

Methods: This 2024 retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of National Health Interview Survey data (years 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2021) included 40,818 cisgender women aged 21-65 without hysterectomy. Joinpoint analysis was performed to calculate the annual percent change (APC) of up-to-date CCS from 2013 to 2021.

DNA-binding affinity and specificity determine the phenotypic diversity in BCL11B-related disorders.

BCL11B is a Cys2-His2 zinc-finger (C2H2-ZnF) domain-containing, DNA-binding, transcription factor with established roles in the development of various organs and tissues, primarily the immune and nervous systems. BCL11B germline variants have been associated with a variety of developmental syndromes. However, genotype-phenotype correlations along with pathophysiologic mechanisms of selected variants mostly remain elusive.

Necrosis of pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland with acute and chronic arteriolar occlusion.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland (PALG) is a benign neoplasm typically presenting with gradual, painless globe displacement and/or lid swelling. We report an atypical case of PALG in a 53-year old male presenting acutely, mimicking orbital cellulitis. Imaging demonstrated an extraconal rim-enhancing soft-tissue lesion medial to the left lacrimal gland, involving superior rectus and levator palpebrae superioris.

Anonymous electronic surveys were used to investigate locum tenens utilization, primary reason for use, limitations on clinical activities, and variations in practice standards or quality.

Ultrasound-guided embolization for renal artery pseudoaneurysm in solitary kidney.

Introduction: Renal artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare yet serious complication following percutaneous nephrolithotomy, especially in patients with solitary kidneys. Effective management is crucial to prevent further renal damage.

The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a novel behavioral intervention (PRIME2) that integrates evidence-based approaches for reducing diabetes risk and perceived stress. We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial of the 16-session PRIME2 intervention vs. usual care among 40 Spanish-speaking Latinx adults with prediabetes and body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m.

Constitutional platelet disorders have become better understood since Bernard and Soulier first described a case in 1948. Their diagnosis can also be challenging due to overlap in clinical presentation and lab findings with platelet type von Willebrand. Bernard-Soulier syndrome is a disorder caused by GPIb receptor mutations that decrease its affinity for von Willebrand factor resulting in reduced platelet function and macrothrombocytopenia.

Two-year outcomes from the Cook IVC Filter (CIVC) Study.

Purpose: Report 2-year outcomes from a prospective, multicenter, non-randomized, single-arm study designed to further assess the safety and effectiveness of the Celect and the Günther Tulip Vena Cava Filters.

Materials And Methods: The BLIND study enrolled patients requiring temporary or permanent IVC filter placement for the prevention of pulmonary embolism (PE). The primary effectiveness endpoint was the rate of technical placement success and 12-month freedom from new symptomatic PE while a filter was indwelling.

Applications of mixed reality with medical imaging for training and clinical practice.

Purpose: This review summarizes the current use of extended reality (XR) including virtual reality (VR), mixed reality, and augmented reality (AR) in the medical field, ranging from medical imaging to training to preoperative planning. It covers the integration of these technologies into clinical practice and within medical training while discussing the challenges and future opportunities in this sphere. This will hopefully encourage more physicians to collaborate on integrating medicine and technology.

Background: Environmental exposures may be associated with increased severity of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, research examining associations of traffic related air pollution with CRS is limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between residential traffic proximity and CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) severity in an existing database of adults in the United States.
