Screening for social determinants of health (SDOH) is recommended, but numerous barriers exist to implementing SDOH screening in clinical spaces. In this study, the authors identified how both active and passive information retrieval methods may be used in clinical spaces to screen for SDOH and meet patient needs. The authors conducted a retrospective sequential cohort analysis comparing the active identification of SDOH through a patient-led digital manual screening process completed in primary care offices from September 2019 to January 2020 and passive identification of SDOH through natural language processing (NLP) from September 2016 to August 2018, among 1735 patients at a large midwestern tertiary referral hospital system and its associated outlying primary care and outpatient facilities.

Tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) expression is known to increase following transient focal cerebral ischemia and reperfusion. Previously, we reported downregulation of t-PA upon suppression of matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12), following transient focal cerebral ischemia and reperfusion. We now present data on the temporal expression of t-PA in the brain after transient ischemia, as well as the interaction between MMP-12 and t-PA, two proteases associated with the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and ischemic brain damage.

We recently showed that the post-ischemic induction of matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12) in the brain degrades tight junction proteins, increases MMP-9 and TNFα expression, and contributes to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, apoptosis, demyelination, and infarct volume development. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the effect of MMP-12 suppression by shRNA-mediated gene silencing on neurological/functional recovery, (2) establish the optimal timing of MMP-12shRNA treatment that provides maximum therapeutic benefit, (3) compare the effectiveness of acute versus chronic MMP-12 suppression, and (4) evaluate potential sex-related differences in treatment outcomes. Cardiometabolic disease is a leading complication of spinal cord injury (SCI) that contributes to premature all-cause cardiovascular morbidity and early death. Despite widespread reports that cardioendocrine disorders are more prevalent in individuals with SCI than those without disability, a well-defined pathophysiology has not been established. Purpose: Proximal ventricular shunt catheter occlusion remains a problematic cause of shunt malfunction, and there is no consistent in vivo or in vitro model to help clinicians and researchers study this phenomenon.

Methods: An in vitro model utilizing standard proximal ventricular catheter and biological occluding agents mimicking choroid plexus was designed, constructed, and calibrated to occlude consistently within a specified timeframe.
