Background: This study primarily aimed to assess the volumetric attributes of the midbrain and perimesencephalic structures preoperatively and following surgical interventions in patients diagnosed with brain herniation secondary to traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Methods: We evaluated patients based on radiological findings and clinical symptoms indicative of brain herniation. We performed semi-automated segmentation of the intracranial structures most relevant to trauma and of interest for the current study, such as hematoma, ventricles, midbrain, and perimesencephalic cisterns.

Market bubbles emerge when asset prices are driven unsustainably higher than asset values, and shifts in belief burst them. We demonstrate an analogous phenomenon in the case of biomedical knowledge, when promising research receives inflated attention. We introduce a diffusion index that quantifies whether research areas have been amplified within social and scientific bubbles, or have diffused and become evaluated more broadly.

Polysomnography remains the diagnostic gold standard for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but it cannot be easily performed in a timely fashion within the practice of a craniomaxillofacial surgeon. Hence, in this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to identify radiographic indicators that could predict obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) diagnosis. We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis, including 109 studies with 9817 participants (3509 controls, 6308 OSA patients), predominantly male (79% controls, 85% OSA patients).

Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) is a rare and life-threatening condition, most prevalent in immunocompromised patients. Early signs and symptoms are often nonspecific. A high index of suspicion in at risk patients should prompt early infectious work-up, including bronchoscopy, followed by aggressive antifungal therapy and early surgical resection when indicated.

The use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) of the vasculature has expanded beyond procedural guidance and is utilized by multiple specialties in varied clinical settings. Evidence supports the use of POCUS for diagnosing deep venous thrombosis in the lower extremities, while for thrombosis in the upper extremities or abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, the evidence is still nascent. Here, we review POCUS of the extremity veins and abdominal aorta with a summary of the pertinent literature, review of the relevant anatomy, description of the appropriate acquisition technique, introduction to associated pathology, and discussion of pitfalls one could encounter.
