Peptide-based strategies have received an enormous amount of attention because of their specificity and applicability. Their specificity and tumor-targeting ability are applied to diagnosis and treatment for cancer patients. In this review, we will summarize recent advancements and future perspectives on peptide-based strategies for cancer treatment.

Background: Brain metastases (BMs), the most common tumors of the central nervous system, are life-threatening with a dismal prognosis. The major challenges to developing effective treatments for BMs are the limited abilities of drugs to target tumors and to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). We aimed to investigate the efficacy of our therapeutic approach against BMs in mouse models that recapitulate the clinical manifestations of BMs.

Microorganisms living at many sites in the human body compose a complex and dynamic community. Accumulating evidence suggests a significant role for microorganisms in cancer, and therapies that incorporate bacteria have been tried in various types of cancer. We previously demonstrated that cupredoxin azurin secreted by the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, enters human cancer cells and induces apoptotic death.

Despite recent advances in cancer research, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains a highly aggressive brain tumor as its treatment options are limited. The current standard treatment includes surgery followed by radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy. However, surgery without image guidance is often challenging to achieve maximal safe resection as it is difficult to precisely discern the lesion to be removed from surrounding brain tissue.

Background: Given the lack of visual discrepancy between malignant and surrounding normal tissue, current breast conserving surgery (BCS) is associated with a high re-excision rate. Due to the increasing cases of BCS, a novel method of complete tumour removal at the initial surgical resection is critically needed in the operating room to help optimize the surgical procedure and to confirm tumour-free edges.
Methods: We developed a unique near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging probe, ICG-p28, composed of the clinically nontoxic tumour-targeting peptide p28 and the FDA-approved NIR dye indocyanine green (ICG).

Total hip replacements (THR) are becoming an common orthopedic surgucal procedure in the United States (332 K/year in 2017) to relieve pain and improve the mobility of those that are affected by osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or injury. However, complications like tribocorrosion, or material degradation due to friction and corrosion, may result in THR failure. Unfortunately, few strategies to non-invasively diagnose early-stage complications are reported in literature, leading to implant complications being detected after irreversible damage.

Duration of closure was compared between groups. Tissues were tested under tension to failure, and mode of failure data were collected by video capture.

Blood vessels are lined by endothelial cells engaged in distinct organ-specific functions but little is known about their characteristic gene expression profiles. RNA-Sequencing of the brain, lung, and heart endothelial translatome identified specific pathways, transporters and cell-surface markers expressed in the endothelium of each organ, which can be visualized at http://www.rehmanlab.

Vascular endothelial (VE) protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) is an endothelial-specific phosphatase that stabilizes VE-cadherin junctions. Although studies have focused on the role of VE-PTP in dephosphorylating VE-cadherin in the activated endothelium, little is known of VE-PTP's role in the quiescent endothelial monolayer. Here, we used the photoconvertible fluorescent protein VE-cadherin-Dendra2 to monitor VE-cadherin dynamics at adherens junctions (AJs) in confluent endothelial monolayers.

Gas-perfused microchannels generated a linear oxygen gradient via diffusion across a 100 μm polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane. The device enabled exposure of a single monolayer of cells sharing culture media to a heterogeneous oxygen landscape, thus reflecting the oxygen gradients found at the microscale in the physiological setting and allowing for the real-time exchange of paracrine factors and metabolites between cells exposed to varying oxygen levels. By tuning the distance between two gas supply channels, the slope of the oxygen gradient was controlled.

Early B cell development is characterized by large-scale Igh locus contraction prior to V(D)J recombination to facilitate a highly diverse Ig repertoire. However, an understanding of the molecular architecture that mediates locus contraction remains unclear. We have combined high-resolution chromosome conformation capture (3C) techniques with 3D DNA FISH to identify three conserved topological subdomains.
