"The Nordic diet" is an umbrella term that encompasses any interpretation that combines Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) with local Nordic foods. The five Nordic countries have collaborated on Nordic Nutrition Recommendations for forty years, including FBDGs, so their national guidelines are similar. The countries also share similar public health issues, including widespread nonconformity to the guidelines, although in different ways.

Understanding the structure of a bacterial population is essential in order to understand bacterial evolution. Estimating the core genome (those genes common to all, or nearly all, strains of a species) is a key component of such analyses. The size and composition of the core genome varies by dataset, but we hypothesized that the variation between different collections of the same bacterial species would be minimal.

The pneumococcus is a leading global pathogen and a key virulence factor possessed by the majority of pneumococci is an antigenic polysaccharide capsule ('serotype'), which is encoded by the capsular () locus. Approximately 100 different serotypes are known, but the extent of sequence diversity within the loci of individual serotypes is not well understood. Investigating serotype-specific sequence variation is crucial to the design of sequence-based serotyping methodology, understanding pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) effectiveness and the design of future PCVs.

Late-life brain volume: a life-course approach. The AGES-Reykjavik study.

Neurobiol Aging

May 2016

Intramural Research Program, Laboratory of Epidemiology and Population Sciences, National Institute on Aging, Bethesda, MD, USA. Electronic address:

The "fetal-origins-of-adult-disease" hypothesis proposes that an unfavorable intrauterine environment, estimated from small birth size, may induce permanent changes in fetal organs, including the brain. These changes in combination with effects of (cardiovascular) exposures during adult life may condition the later risk of brain atrophy. We investigated the combined effect of small birth size and mid-life cardiovascular risk on late-life brain volumes.

Article Synopsis
  • Infants in Nordic countries, particularly in Iceland, typically have high levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) due to vitamin D supplement use, with a study tracking these levels into childhood.
  • At age six, 64% of the 139 children studied had sufficient vitamin D levels, with a mean 25(OH)D level of 56.5 nmol/L, and factors like higher vitamin D intake and seasonal blood sampling significantly influenced sufficiency.
  • The results indicate that vitamin D status from infancy to age six is correlated (0.34), suggesting the importance of early intake and seasonal effects, warranting further investigation into the clinical implications of vitamin D tracking.

Reproductive health care is the only field in medicine where health care professionals (HCPs) are allowed to limit a patient's access to a legal medical treatment - usually abortion or contraception - by citing their 'freedom of conscience.' However, the authors' position is that 'conscientious objection' ('CO') in reproductive health care should be called dishonourable disobedience because it violates medical ethics and the right to lawful health care, and should therefore be disallowed. Three countries - Sweden, Finland, and Iceland - do not generally permit HCPs in the public health care system to refuse to perform a legal medical service for reasons of 'CO' when the service is part of their professional duties.
