Retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (RIRI) is the common pathological basis of many ophthalmic diseases in the later stages, and inflammation is the primary damage mechanism of RIRI. Our study aimed to assess whether electroacupuncture (EA) has a protective effect against RIRI and to elucidate its related mechanisms. A high-intraocular pressure (HIOP) model was used to simulate RIRI in Wistar rats.

High-fat/sucrose diet feeding in mice causes loss of corneal nerve function and impairs corneal wound healing. While changing to a diet with a low fat/sugar composition and enrichments in complex carbohydrates mitigates the reduction in nerve function, it remains to be determined if it has an effect on corneal wound healing. In this study, 6-week-old C57BL/6 male mice were fed either a normal diet or a high-fat/sucrose diet for 20 weeks.

Purpose: Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men are known to have a high prevalence of myopia, which may be due to intense near-work from an early age. This study objectively assessed near-viewing behaviours in ultra-Orthodox and non-ultra-Orthodox men in Israel for different tasks.
Methods: Ultra-Orthodox (n = 30) and non-ultra-Orthodox (n = 38) men aged 18-33 years participated.

Purpose: To determine correlations between lipids in the fluid reservoir (FR) and the severity of midday fogging (MDF) in scleral lens (SL) wear.
Methods: SL neophytes were recruited to wear custom SL for 4 days, examined after 8 hours on days 1 and 4. Lens vault and MDF were quantified from anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), and the FR was collected and analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

The objective of this review was to estimate the prevalence of strabismus and amblyopia in Africa. A systematic online literature search was conducted for articles on strabismus and amblyopia in Africa. Meta-analysis was performed, using the Freeman-Tukey double arcsine transformation, to estimate the prevalence of strabismus and amblyopia in Africa.

Background: Genetic variants within nearly 1000 loci are known to contribute to modulation of blood lipid levels. However, the biological pathways underlying these associations are frequently unknown, limiting understanding of these findings and hindering downstream translational efforts such as drug target discovery.
Results: To expand our understanding of the underlying biological pathways and mechanisms controlling blood lipid levels, we leverage a large multi-ancestry meta-analysis (N = 1,654,960) of blood lipids to prioritize putative causal genes for 2286 lipid associations using six gene prediction approaches.

Significance: As the myopia epidemic unfolds, there is growing urgency to identify and implement effective interventions to slow myopia progression. This investigation evaluated the effectiveness of an evidence-based myopia treatment algorithm in a clinical setting among 342 consecutive children.
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate effectiveness of a clinical treatment algorithm for myopia progression in children.

This study investigates the efficacy of miltefosine, alkylphospholipid, and alkyltriazolederivative compounds against leukemia lineages. The cytotoxic effects and cellular and molecular mechanisms of the compounds were investigated. The inhibitory potential and mechanism of inhibition of cathepsins B and L, molecular docking simulation, molecular dynamics and binding free energy evaluation were performed to determine the interaction of cathepsins and compounds.

Purpose: Hyaluronan (HA) is a major constituent of the extracellular matrix (ECM) that has high viscosity and is essential for maintaining tissue hydration. In the cornea, HA is enriched in the limbal region and is a key component of the limbal epithelial stem cell niche. HA is upregulated after injury participating in the formation of the provisional matrix, and has a key role in regulating the wound healing process.

Corneal wound healing is integral for resolution of corneal disease or for post-operative healing. However, corneal scarring that may occur secondary to this process can significantly impair vision. Tissue transglutaminase 2 (TGM2) inhibition has shown promising antifibrotic effects and thus holds promise to prevent or treat corneal scarring.

Purpose: Retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (RIRI) is the basis of the pathology that leads to many retinal diseases and induces necroptosis and apoptosis. Tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) is critically involved in necroptosis and apoptosis. Delta-opioid receptor (DOR) activation inhibits TNF- release in our previous studies, it might prevent necroptosis and apoptosis by inhibiting the release of TNF-.

The binocular alignment of the eyes involves both voluntary and reflexive mechanisms, but little is known about the visual input and neurological pathway of the reflex component. Our studies examined the role of spatiotemporal frequency and contrast in the control of reflex eye alignment, and compared the contrast sensitivity of the alignment reflex with psychophysical contrast sensitivity. We measured the contrast sensitivity of vertical disparity-driven vergence eye movements in response to bandwidth filtered static or 6 Hz counterphase flickering noise and measured psychophysical detection sensitivity for the same stimuli.

Excess intracellular Cu perturbs cellular redox balance and thus causes diseases. However, the relationship between cellular redox status and Cu homeostasis and how such an interplay is coordinated within cellular compartments has not yet been well established. Using combined approaches of organelle-specific redox sensor Grx1-roGFP2 and non-targeted proteomics, we investigate the real-time Cu-dependent antioxidant defenses of mitochondria and cytosol in live HEK293 cells.

In infant monkeys, IOP is typically measured under anesthesia. This study aimed to establish a method for awake IOP measurement in infant rhesus monkeys, determine diurnal variation, and assess the effects of dilation and sedation.

Purpose: Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) is a progressive corneal disease that impacts the structure and stiffness of the Descemet's membrane (DM), the substratum for corneal endothelial cells (CECs). These structural alterations of the DM could contribute to the loss of the CECs resulting in corneal edema and blindness. Oxidative stress and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) pathways have been implicated in endothelial cell loss and endothelial to mesenchymal transition of CECs in FECD.
