Background: It is important to accurately determine the blood ethanol concentration (BEC) to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment of patients in the emergency department (ED) and protect their legal rights. This study aimed to determine whether sterilization of venipuncture site with ethanol, which is frequently used in practice in the ED would affect BEC.
Methods: Venous blood samples were collected by two consecutive techniques from 94 individuals who were admitted to the ED, had an indication for BEC measurement, and volunteered to participate in the study.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) have a high prevalence among allied health care providers because of the demanding nature of their work and lack of practicing proper ergonomics. The aim of this study focused on patterns of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affecting different health care providers working in a different unit of a tertiary care hospital. This cross-sectional study collected data from 2000 allied health care providers working at various departments of Civil Hospital and Dow University Hospital of Karachi (DUHS), via self-administered questionnaire, based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.

Introduction: There have been some significant changes regarding healthcare utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Majority of the reports about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on diabetes care are from the first wave of the pandemic. We aim to evaluate the potential effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the severity of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and new onset Type 1 diabetes presenting with DKA, and also evaluate children with DKA and acute COVID-19 infection.

Patients with Down's syndrome exhibit a unique pattern for a number of malignant conditions but there is inconsistent data for the risk of oesophageal cancer. We present a case of early-onset aggressive oesophageal carcinoma in a young male patient diagnosed with Trisomy 21, who presented with complaints of progressive dysphagia, vomiting, voice change and weight loss. Barium swallow showed shouldering sign at distal oesophagus.

Objectives: To compare the survival of first- and second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in patients with rare EGFR exon 18 and exon 20 mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated survival characteristics of 125 patients with EGFR exon 18 and exon 20 mutated NSCLC who received erlotinib or afatinib as first line treatment between 2012 and 2021 from 34 oncology centres. Since exon 20 insertion is associated with TKI resistance, these 18 patients were excluded from the study.

extract and kratom alkaloids decrease alcohol consumption in mice at least in part through actions at the δ-opioid receptor (δOR). However, the most potent opioidergic kratom alkaloid, 7-hydroxymitragynine, exhibits rewarding properties and hyperlocomotion presumably due to preferred affinity for the mu opioid receptor (µOR). We hypothesized that opioidergic kratom alkaloids like paynantheine and speciogynine with reduced µOR potency could provide a starting point for developing opioids with an improved therapeutic window to treat alcohol use disorder.

It has been suggested that pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) could be a potential sequela of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in particular in those with hypertension; however, development of PAH after the course of COVID-19 in normotensive individuals are rarely reported. Here, we report a patient who developed PAH two months post-COVID-19. The patient was a 55-year-old female and normotensive, tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), developed mild respiratory distress syndrome and necessitated continuous positive airway pressure during the treatment in the hospital.

Objective: To evaluate the attitudes of physicians and patients toward physical examination in physically separated environments using a laryngoscopic examination model.
Materials And Methods: Six experienced laryngologists performed laryngoscopic examinations in 30 patients in a closed-chamber examination unit. The physicians and patients were asked to compare all domains with their previous standard laryngoscopic examination experience using a 10-point visual analog scale (0, poor performance; 10, good performance), including effectiveness of communication, difficulty of examination, perception of safety against airborne transmission of COVID-19, applicability of the unit for future examinations, perception of protective environment, and overall comfort.

Purpose: To investigate the expression of proteins fosfatidilinositol-4,5-bifosfate 3-quinase (PIK3CA) and phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) in HER2-positive breast cancer and verify their associations with clinical and pathological variables.
Methods: We assessed PTEN and PIK3CA status using immunohistochemistry (IHC), which was performed in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsies from 50 patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. Medical records were studied for collection of clinical-pathological information, including overall survival (OS).

Background: Maxillofacial surgeries are known to have difficulty in airway management due to anatomical and functional reasons. Tumors of maxillofacial region and diseases of TM joint limit mouth opening as well as airway space. Various methods have been tried with success for nasotracheal intubation including fiberoptic-aided as well as blind nasal and light-guided intubation.
