Article Synopsis
  • The International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM) has updated guidelines for managing allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) due to improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
  • An expert group utilized a modified Delphi method to reach a consensus on the recommendations, which include screening practices and diagnostic criteria for ABPA and ABPM in both adults and children.
  • Key recommendations include routine screening for fungal sensitization in specific patient groups, clear diagnostic criteria for ABPA and ABPM, and suggested treatments such as oral prednisolone or itraconazole for acute cases, while noting that asymptomatic ABPA patients do not require treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Enterococci are gut microbes found in many land animals and have evolved over hundreds of millions of years, leading to over 60 known species, some of which are harmful, especially in hospitals due to antibiotic resistance.
  • Researchers have identified 18 new species of enterococci from various hosts and environments, indicating a significant increase in known diversity.
  • The study enhances our understanding of enterococcal evolution and highlights potential health threats, as well as identifies key traits and genes connected to host specialization and survival.

CD73 mitigates ZEB1 expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Cell Commun Signal

February 2024

Department of Biophysics, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Av. Bento Gonçalves, 9500, Prédio 43431, sala 107, UFRGS, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Background: ZEB1, a core transcription factor involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), is associated with aggressive cancer cell behavior, treatment resistance, and poor prognosis across various tumor types. Similarly, the expression and activity of CD73, an ectonucleotidase implicated in adenosine generation, is an important marker of tumor malignancy. Growing evidence suggests that EMT and the adenosinergic pathway are intricately linked and play a pivotal role in cancer development.

Poor fetal growth affects eating behavior and the mesocorticolimbic system; however, its influence on the hippocampus has been less explored. Brain insulin sensitivity has been linked to developmental plasticity in response to fetal adversity and to cognitive performance following high-fat diet intake. We investigated whether poor fetal growth and exposure to chronic hyperpalatable food in adulthood could influence the recognition of environmental and food cues, eating behavior patterns, and hippocampal insulin signaling.

Urine toxicological analysis is a relevant tool in both clinical and forensic scenarios, enabling the diagnosis of acute poisonings, elucidation of deaths, verification of substance use in the workplace and identification of drug-facilitated crimes. For these analyses, the dilute-and-shoot technique associated with liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) is a promising alternative since it has demonstrated satisfactory results and broad applicability. This study developed and validated a comprehensive LC-MS-MS screening method to analyze 95 illicit drugs and medicines in urine samples and application to clinical and forensic Brazilian cases.

: Lessons learned from decades of human spaceflight have helped advance the delivery of healthcare in rural and remote areas of the globe. Inclusion of the public in spaceflights is not yet accompanied by technology capable of monitoring their physical and mental health, managing clinical conditions, and rapidly identifying medical emergencies. Telepharmacy is a practice prioritizing pharmacotherapeutic guidance and monitoring to help improve patient quality of life, and can potentially expand the field of space medicine.

Post-surgical pyoderma gangrenosum (P SP G) is a subtype of pyoderma gangrenosum in which non-infectious, painful, inflammatory ulcerative nodules develop in incision sites. Delayed diagnosis and surgical interventions of P SP G often contribute to worsened morbidity. We present a case of a 55-year-old female diagnosed with severe P SP G after breast augmentation and abdominoplasty.

Introduction: Postoperative pain management is crucial for patient recovery with Quadratus Lumborum Block (QLB) and Transversus Abdominis Plane Block (TAPB) emerging as potential techniques. We aimed to compare the analgesic efficacy of QLB and TAPB in patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair.

Methods: We performed a systematic review of Cochrane, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases to identify randomized controlled trials comparing QLB and TAPB in patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair.

We have all experienced the sense of time slowing down when we are bored or speeding up when we are focused, engaged, or excited about a task. In virtual reality (VR), perception of time can be a key aspect related to flow, immersion, engagement, and ultimately, to overall quality of experience. While several studies have explored changes in time perception using questionnaires, limited studies have attempted to characterize them objectively.

Liver volumetric and anatomic assessment in living donor liver transplantation: The role of modern imaging and artificial intelligence.

World J Transplant

December 2023

Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation, Irmandade Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre 90020-090, Brazil.

The shortage of deceased donor organs has prompted the development of alternative liver grafts for transplantation. Living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has emerged as a viable option, expanding the donor pool and enabling timely transplantation with favorable graft function and improved long-term outcomes. An accurate evaluation of the donor liver's volumetry (LV) and anatomical study is crucial to ensure adequate future liver remnant, graft volume and precise liver resection.

EEG Amplitude Modulation Analysis across Mental Tasks: Towards Improved Active BCIs.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2023

Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, University of Quebec, Montreal, QC H5A 1K6, Canada.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has emerged as an influential communication tool with extensive applications across numerous fields, including entertainment, marketing, mental state monitoring, and particularly medical neurorehabilitation. Despite its immense potential, the reliability of BCI systems is challenged by the intricacies of data collection, environmental factors, and noisy interferences, making the interpretation of high-dimensional electroencephalogram (EEG) data a pressing issue. While the current trends in research have leant towards improving classification using deep learning-based models, our study proposes the use of new features based on EEG amplitude modulation (AM) dynamics.
