Introduction: Epidemiological data suggest substantial issues on the mental health of university students worldwide. Self-compassion is associated with lower rates of psychological distress and better positive mental health. Thus, we have developed a app-based intervention based on self-compassion principles targeting the prevention and promotion of mental health in college students.

Electronic address:

Chronic stress-related brain disorders are widespread and debilitating, and often cause lasting neurobehavioral deficits. Minocycline, a common antibiotic and an established inhibitor of microglia, emerges as potential treatment of these disorders. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is an important emerging model organism in translational neuroscience and stress research.

Background: Despite a large body of evidence supporting the use of intravascular imaging (IVI) to guide percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), concerns exist about its universal recommendation. The selective use of IVI to guide PCI of complex lesions and patients is perceived as a rational approach.

Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Proteins are essential for the maintenance, repair, and growth of muscle mass. This is particularly important for master athletes because aging has been associated with loss of muscle mass, function, and strength. Moreover, the timing of intake has been shown important for the best protein utilization.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the quadriceps femoris, a muscle commonly injured in sports involving kicking and sprinting, and assesses whether eccentric exercises like the Reverse Nordic Curl (RNC) can help prevent these injuries.
  • Twenty-three healthy participants were monitored while performing RNC and three bodyweight squat exercises (single-leg squat, Bulgarian squat, forward lunge) to compare the eccentric activation of quadriceps muscles.
  • The results indicated that RNC had similar activation levels for some muscles compared to squat-based exercises but was less effective at activating the vastus lateralis, suggesting it may not offer superior benefits for quadriceps strength training.

Migration, a multifaceted phenomenon, has a significant impact on health. Migrants perform similar movement patterns within their country of origin, in transit, and in the country of destination, thus making it difficult to monitor TB treatment throughout the journey. The objective was to compare the effectiveness of different treatment modalities in adherence to the short-term regimen for LTBI (3HP) among international migrants and refugees.

Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats Present Exacerbated Focal Stroke Behavioral Outcomes.

Brain Sci

August 2024

Graduate Program in Biological Sciences: Biochemistry, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Annex Building, Ramiro Barcelos Street 2600, Porto Alegre 90035-003, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

This study aimed to analyze the effects of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) in a model of permanent ischemic stroke (focal ischemia due to thermocoagulation of pial vessels) on sensorimotor function (cylinder test and patch removal test), behavioral tasks (novelty habituation memory open field task) and cerebral infarct size in adult male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) for 42 days after the occurrence of a stroke. We observed that the stroke caused asymmetry in the front paws and delayed adhesive removal. These effects were spontaneously reduced in WKY rats, but not in SHR.

Sepsis is a potentially fatal clinical condition that results from an immune imbalance in the host during an infection. It presents systemic alterations due to excessive activation of pro-inflammatory mediators that contribute to inflammation, formation of reactive species, and tissue damage. Anti-inflammatory mediators are then extensively activated to regulate this process, leading to immune exhaustion and, consequently, immunosuppression of the host.

Background: Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy has shown promise in treating hematologic malignancies, yet its potential cardiotoxic effects require thorough investigation.

Objectives: We aim to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the cardiotoxic effects of CAR-T therapy in adults with hematologic malignancies.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies reporting cardiovascular outcomes, such as arrhythmias, heart failure, and reduced left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF).

Resistance exercise training (RET) is considered an excellent tool for preventing diseases with an inflammatory background. Its neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties are responsible for positively modulating cholinergic and oxidative systems, promoting neurogenesis, and improving memory. However, the mechanisms behind these actions are largely unknown.

Pregnancy loss can have a profound impact on a woman's psychological and emotional health often leading to a grieving process. Furthermore, the loss of a child is a risk factor for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition-Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). This cross-sectional study investigated the associations between mental health, marital adjustment, family support, gestational age, and prolonged grief.

Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate dropout rates and discern potential factors contributing to the discontinuation of treatment provided to transgender individuals by the Transdisciplinary Gender Identity Program at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (PROTIG).

Methodology: This study employs a descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective design to analyze socio-demographic and clinical data obtained from medical records of patients treated at PROTIG between 2000 and 2018. A structured form, devised by PROTIG's professional team, was utilized to extract and evaluate several variables including: age, gender, education level, diagnosis of F64 according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10: Version: 2010), clinical comorbidities (coded by ICD-10), laboratory diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections, distance between patients' residence and the hospital, and year of entry into PROTIG.

Assessment of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Safety in Patients with Advanced Liver Fibrosis.

Obes Surg

September 2024

Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre, R. Sarmento Leite, 245 - Centro Histórico, Porto Alegre, RS, 90050-170, Brazil.

Purpose: The well-established relationship between obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a key etiological factor in the development of liver cirrhosis. Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for weight loss in patients with moderate-to-severe obesity, also playing a role in controlling MASLD. However, surgical safety in patients with advanced fibrosis remains to be established.

Article Synopsis
  • Itching is common in older adults and may indicate neurodegenerative diseases like frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD-SD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), as certain brain areas associated with itch sensations could be affected by these conditions.
  • A study compared the incidence of itching in patients with FTLD-SD and AD, using brain MRIs and medical records from a research project at UCSF over a period of nearly 20 years.
  • Results showed that itching was more prevalent in FTLD-SD patients (38%) compared to those with AD (18%), suggesting a possible link between unexplained itching and neurodegenerative processes, particularly in those with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.
