Background: Despite the development of various therapeutic approaches over the past decades, the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains a major challenge. The extracellular adenosine-generating enzyme, CD73, is involved in the pathogenesis and progression of GBM, and targeting CD73 may represent a novel approach to treat this cancer. In this study, three-dimensional culture systems based on three hydrogel compositions were characterized and an optimal type was selected to simulate the GBM microenvironment.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with early detection and advanced treatments contributing to declining mortality rates. However, managing comorbid conditions, particularly mental illness, presents significant challenges for cancer treatment. This study systematically reviews and meta-analyses the impact of having a pre-existing mental illness on breast cancer treatment utilisation, focusing on specific treatments and comparing different mental illnesses.

An expert consensus statement on biomarkers of ageing for use in intervention studies.

J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci

December 2024

Human Nutrition & Exercise Research Centre, Centre for Healthier Lives, Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

Biomarkers of ageing serve as important outcome measures in longevity-promoting interventions. However, there is limited consensus on which specific biomarkers are most appropriate for human intervention studies. This work aimed to address this need by establishing an expert consensus on biomarkers of ageing for use in intervention studies via the Delphi method.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Chemo-resistance is a major challenge in cancer therapy, and NRF1 and NRF2 are important in how cells handle oxidative stress, affecting tumor growth and drug resistance.
  • The study examines how NRF2 functions differently in normal and cancer cells, supporting cancer survival while protecting healthy cells.
  • It suggests that targeting the NRF signaling pathways could lead to new treatments that improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy against resistant tumors.

Background: Problems in children's early social and emotional development are likely to have major long-term consequences for the individual and society: maternal emotional well-being is associated with better outcomes. Interventions designed to improve both maternal mental health and the mother-child relationship are thus likely to benefit both maternal health and child development.

Objectives: To establish the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the Mellow Babies parenting intervention for women experiencing psychosocial stress and their 6- to 18-month-old babies.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes: A Promising Therapeutic Strategy for Age-Related Diseases.

Cell Prolif

December 2024

The College of Basic Medical Science, Health Sciences Institute, China Medical University, Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China.

The global increase in the aging population has led to a concurrent rise in the incidence of age-related diseases, posing substantial challenges to healthcare systems and affecting the well-being of the elderly. Identifying and securing effective treatments has become an urgent priority. In this context, mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-Exos) have emerged as a promising and innovative modality in the field of anti-aging medicine, offering a multifaceted therapeutic approach.

Uropathogenic (UPEC) strains are the main bacteria that cause urinary tract infections (UTIs). UPEC are a significant public health hazard due to their high proliferation, antibiotic resistance, and infection recurrence. The ability to form biofilms is a mechanism of antibiotic resistance, which requires the expression of different genes such as , , , and .

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham, UK; National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre, Birmingham, UK; Centre for Patient Reported Outcomes Research, School of Health Sciences, College of Medical and Dental Sciences, Birmingham, UK; University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK. Electronic address:

Without careful dissection of the ways in which biases can be encoded into artificial intelligence (AI) health technologies, there is a risk of perpetuating existing health inequalities at scale. One major source of bias is the data that underpins such technologies. The STANDING Together recommendations aim to encourage transparency regarding limitations of health datasets and proactive evaluation of their effect across population groups.

Background: Condition-specific health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) instruments can be more responsive and sensitive to specific conditions and diseases than generic HRQoL instruments. This systematic review aims to identify the condition-specific preference-based instruments that have been used with young people and identify how preference values have been obtained for these instruments. This review will inform future researchers about the methods used to elicit utilities for condition-specific HRQoL instruments.

Harnessing the power of the immune system to target cancer cells is one of the most appealing approaches for cancer therapy. Among these immunotherapies, messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) cancer vaccines are worthy of consideration, as they have demonstrated promising results in clinical trials. These vaccines have proven to be safe and well-tolerated.

Changes in DNA methylation are associated with systemic lupus erythematosus flare remission and clinical subtypes.

Clin Epigenetics

December 2024

Genomics of Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease Section, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has numerous symptoms across organs and an unpredictable flare-remittance pattern. This has made it challenging to understand drivers of long-term SLE outcomes. Our objective was to identify whether changes in DNA methylation over time, in an actively flaring SLE cohort, were associated with remission and whether these changes meaningfully subtype SLE patients.

Pregnant people are ubiquitously exposed to endocrine-disrupting phthalates through consumer products and food. The placenta may be particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of phthalates, with evidence from animal models suggesting impacts on placental development and vascularization. We translate this research to humans, examining gestational exposure to phthalates and phthalate replacements in relation to novel markers of chorionic plate surface vascularization.

The immune system is a key player in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative disorders. While brain resident immune cell-mediated neuroinflammation and peripheral immune cell (eg, T cell) infiltration into the brain have been shown to significantly contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, the nature and extent of immune responses in the brain in the context of AD and related dementias (ADRD) remain unclear. Furthermore, the roles of the peripheral immune system in driving ADRD pathology remain incompletely elucidated.
