Article Synopsis
  • Advanced practitioners (APs) like nurse practitioners and physician assistants play a big role in helping cancer patients and improving their care.
  • A survey in early 2020 showed that most APs think clinical trials (research studies for new treatments) are important, but many want to be more involved in them.
  • Some challenges APs face in participating more in clinical trials include not having enough time, not knowing enough details about the trials, and not having a clear role in the research process.

Purpose: Oncology advanced practitioners (APs), including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists, and pharmacists, are skilled health-care providers who contribute significantly to quality cancer care. However, little is known about how APs function within the clinical trials arena. With low rates of clinical trial enrollment among the adult oncology patient population, APs could play an important role in improving clinical trial enrollment.

Background: Information on the role of the neighborhood environment and colorectal cancer risk is limited. We investigated the association between a comprehensive suite of possible obesogenic neighborhood attributes (socioeconomic status, population density, restaurant and retail food environments, numbers of recreational facilities and businesses, commute patterns, traffic density, and street connectivity) and colorectal cancer risk in the Multiethnic Cohort Study.

Methods: Among 81,197 eligible participants living in California (35,397 males and 45,800 females), 1973 incident cases (981 males and 992 females) of invasive colorectal cancer were identified between 1993 and 2010.

However, there are many issues that make accurate determination of fruit and vegetable consumption quite difficult. There are many methods used to measure fruit and vegetable intake, but all have limitations.

Although the nursing care environment has changed significantly over the past 30 years, little has changed in the educational methods used to prepare new nurses. Since the 1930s, most clinical education in nursing has been structured with a faculty member supervising a small group of students on one or more inpatient units. Students usually move to new settings for each clinical rotation.

Analysis of the data from 10 individual audiotaped interviews, using a semistructured questionnaire, yielded major themes of knowledge acquisition, self-efficacy, and social support that are associated with behaviors that control asthma with better outcomes. Specifically, the greatest knowledge acquisition and symptom recognition were associated with exposure to multiple educators, especially school-based programs.
