Improvements in viral gene annotation using large language models and soft alignments.

Background: The annotation of protein sequences in public databases has long posed a challenge in molecular biology. This issue is particularly acute for viral proteins, which demonstrate limited homology to known proteins when using alignment, k-mer, or profile-based homology search approaches. A novel methodology employing Large Language Models (LLMs) addresses this methodological challenge by annotating protein sequences based on embeddings.

Stress-Alteration Enhancement of the Reactivity of Aluminum Nanoparticles in the Catalytic Decomposition of -Tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (JP-10).

High-energy-density aluminum nanoparticles (AlNPs) upon thermal annealing followed by superquenching result in elevated stress levels in the metallic core and reduced surface energy at the core-shell interface. Isomer-selective vacuum ultraviolet-based photoionization mass spectrometry coupled to a high-temperature chemical microreactor reveals that these stress-altered AlNPs (SA-AlNPs) exhibit distinctive temperature-dependent reactivities toward catalytic decomposition of the hydrocarbon jet fuel -tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (JP-10, CH) compared to untreated AlNPs (UN-AlNPs). SA-AlNPs show a delayed initiation of the decomposition for JP-10 by 200 K relative to the UN-AlNPs; however, the full decomposition is achieved at a 100 K lower temperature.

Cancer care coordination in rural Hawaii: a focus group study.

Background: Rural populations consistently experience a disproportionate burden of cancer, including higher incidence and mortality rates, compared to the urban populations. Factors that are thought to contribute to these disparities include limited or lack of access to care and challenges with care coordination (CC). In Hawaii, many patients residing in rural areas experience unique challenges with CC as they require inter-island travel for their cancer treatment.

The objective of this study was to measure the increase in utilization of MRI before prostate biopsy and the effects on the distribution of Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RAD) scores and Gleason grades over a 5-year interval in an integrated health system.

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of prostate MRI studies prior to biopsy in the calendar years of 2017 and 2022.

Objectives: To evaluate associations between serum analytes used for genetic screening and obstetric complications among twin pregnancies.

Methods: This cohort included twins delivered at a tertiary care hospital from 2009 to 2017. Abnormal levels of pregnancy associated plasma protein (PAPP-A), first and second trimester human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), alpha fetoprotein (AFP), estriol, and inhibin, reported as multiples of the median (MoM), were defined as <5 %ile or >95 %ile for our cohort.

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is an optimal method for detecting and monitoring cetaceans as they frequently produce sound while underwater. Cue counting, counting acoustic cues of deep-diving cetaceans instead of animals, is an alternative method for density estimation, but requires an average cue production rate to convert cue density to animal density. Limited information about click rates exists for sperm whales in the central North Pacific Ocean.

Ma ka hana ka 'ike: Implementing Culturally Responsive Educational Practices.

This study uses qualitative storytelling methodology to explore the culturally responsive practices of five educators in Hawai'i. Part of a larger study on a place-based resilience and sustainability graduate certificate program at The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, more broadly, we trace how their experiences as kumu both shape the program and are shaped by it. Their expertise and practices provide actionable examples of how responsive educational approaches, rooted in cultural practice, place, and community, can transform educational experiences for historically marginalized students and communities.

Exploring the Hawaiian Ala Wai Watershed with Zebrafish.

The Ala Wai Canal is an artificial waterway in the tourist district of Waikiki in Honolulu, HI. Originally built to collect runoff from industrial, residential, and green spaces dedicated to recreation, the Ala Wai Canal has since experienced potent levels of toxicity due to this runoff entering the watershed and making it hazardous for both marine life and humans at current concentration, including (zebrafish). A community of learners at educations levels from high school to postbaccalaureate from Oahu, HI was connected through the Consortium for Increasing Research and Collaborative Learning Experiences (CIRCLE) distance research program.

Exploring perspectives and insights of experienced voyagers on human health and Polynesian oceanic voyaging: A qualitative study.

Background: The Worldwide Voyage (WWV) was a 3-year (2014-2017) open-ocean voyage to circumnavigate the world using Indigenous knowledge and navigational skills aboard Hōkūle'a, a traditionally designed Native Hawaiian (NH) voyaging canoe (wa'a kaulua). Each WWV segment included experienced crew and leadership who were recognized by their voyaging peers as highly experienced in Polynesian oceanic voyaging. This study explored the perceptions and insights of WWV-experienced ocean voyagers on the interconnection between human health and oceanic voyaging.

Introduction: Children, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors experience overall increased risks of infertility that are preventable through effective fertility preservation services prior to starting cancer treatment. Oncofertility care is the evidence-based practice of informing newly diagnosed cancer patients about their reproductive risks and supporting shared decision-making on fertility preservation services. Proteome-wide association study and functional validation identify novel protein markers for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Unlabelled: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains a lethal malignancy, largely due to the paucity of reliable biomarkers for early detection and therapeutic targeting. Existing blood protein biomarkers for PDAC often suffer from replicability issues, arising from inherent limitations such as unmeasured confounding factors in conventional epidemiologic study designs. To circumvent these limitations, we use genetic instruments to identify proteins with genetically predicted levels to be associated with PDAC risk.

Health Care Access and Utilization and the Latino Health Paradox.

Background: The Latino health paradox is the phenomenon whereby recent Latino immigrants have, on average, better health outcomes on some indicators than Latino immigrants who have lived in the United States longer and US-born Latinos and non-Latino Whites. This study assesses the associations between various work characteristics and memory problems among this population.

Purpose is an important construct across contexts and cultures, with evidence suggesting it is strongly related to health, health behaviors, discrimination, and experiences of trauma. In this narrative review of the research on purpose in Hawai'i, the authors identify, critically analyze, and synthesize the extant literature found through a comprehensive literature search. It then discusses important cultural considerations for engaging in purpose research in Hawai'i, broadly, and with the Indigenous people of Hawai'i ().

Understanding Factors Affecting Health Providers' Perceptions of Pharmacist Roles in HPV Vaccine Administration.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a viral infection that sexually active females and males may be exposed to in their lifetime. The HPV vaccine is highly recommended especially among children to protect them before their anticipated exposure to HPV, however, vaccination uptake in Hawai'i remains low. As of 2017, legislation allows pharmacists to vaccinate for adolescent vaccines with the potential to increase access and opportunities for patients to complete the HPV vaccine series.

Challenges Faced by Rural Health Care Providers Caring for Parkinson's Disease Patients in Neighbor Islands of Hawai'i.

When compared to their urban counterparts, rural regions have worse health outcomes and more challenges in health care access. As the only island state in the US, Hawai'i's unique geographic layout may magnify these disparities. However, there are limited publications on the impact of urban-rural disparities in health care in Hawai'i.

Carbon stock projection for four major forest plantation species in Japan.

Carbon sequestration via afforestation and forest growth is effective for mitigating global warming. Accurate and robust information on forest growth characteristics by tree species, region, and large-scale land-use change is vital and future prediction of forest carbon stocks based on this information is of great significance. These predictions allow exploring forestry practices that maximize carbon sequestration by forests, including wood production.

Introduction: The efficacy of sacubitril/valsartan versus olmesartan remains controversial for the control of hypertension. We conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the influence of sacubitril/valsartan versus olmesartan on the control of hypertension.

Methods: We have searched PubMed, Embase, Web of science, EBSCO, and Cochrane library databases through July 2023 for randomized controlled trials assessing the effect of sacubitril/valsartan versus olmesartan on the control of hypertension.

Nutritional, physicochemical, and functional properties of Hawaiian taro (Colocasia esculenta) flours: A comparative study.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta) flour is a viable carbohydrate alternative and a functional additive for food formulation; however, different taro varieties may possess distinct characteristics that may influence their suitability for food production. This study evaluated the nutritional, physicochemical, and functional properties of flours from five Hawaiian taro varieties: Bun-Long, Mana Ulu, Moi, Kaua'i Lehua, and Tahitian. Tahitian, Bun-long, and Moi had high total starch contents of 40.

Using a community engaged research approach to develop the social skills training program for adults with Williams syndrome.

This article describes the development of a distance-delivered social skills training program for adults with Williams syndrome (SSTP-WS) through a community engaged approach. Throughout six phases of development, the research team received input from adults with Williams syndrome, caregivers, service providers, educators, and researchers on (a) the need for a training program and topics to be addressed (Phase 1), (b) an initial draft of the SSTP-WS (Phase 3), (c) the intervention pilot study (Phase 5), and (d) feedback to provide context for the results of the study (Phase 6). The development of the SSTP-WS resulted in an intervention aligned with the Williams syndrome community's values and needs that supports the unique cognitive and behavioral phenotypes and social characteristics of this low incidence disability population.
