In this research we identify the processes leading to hierarchical society in a region of Sāmoa, the often-labelled 'birthplace' of the Polynesian chiefdoms. Our analyses in the Falefa Valley on 'Upolu island combine lidar mapping and ground survey to reveal an extensive system of archaeological features: rock walls, ditches, and platforms. Excavation and radiocarbon dating underpin a feature chronology and characterize feature variation.

Prevalence of Chronic Pain by Immigration Status and Latino Ethnicity.

Objective: The goal of this study was to evaluate the Latino paradox and healthy migrant hypotheses by estimating the association between the prevalence of chronic pain, immigration status, and Latino ethnicity.

We investigate the genetic history of the Y chromosome haplogroup L1-M22, which, while prevalent in these regions, lacks in-depth study. Robust Bayesian analyses of 165 high-coverage Y chromosomes favor a West Asian origin for L1-M22 ∼20.

Background: Over the past millennia, the evaluation and management of thyroid nodules has essentially remained the same with thyroidectomy as the only reliable method to identify malignancy. However, in the last 30 years, technological advances have significantly improved diagnostic management of thyroid nodules. Advances in imaging have allowed development of a reliable risk- based stratification system to identify nodules at increased risk of malignancy.

Novel CTD tag establishes shark fins as ocean observing platforms.

Animal-borne tags are effective instruments for collecting ocean data and can be used to fill spatial gaps in the observing network. We deployed the first conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) satellite tags on the dorsal fin of salmon sharks (Lamna ditropis) to demonstrate the potential of sharks to monitor essential ocean variables and oceanographic features in the Gulf of Alaska. Over 1360 km and 36 days in the summer of 2015, the salmon shark collected 56 geolocated, temperature-salinity profiles.

Because many indicators of stress are imperceptible to observers, the early detection of stress remains a pressing medical need, as it can enable early intervention. We present the genome assembly of the pennate diatom strain UHM3201 (Ochrophyta; Bacillariophyceae; Rhopalodiales; Rhopalodiaceae) and that of its cyanobacterial endosymbiont (Chroococcales: Aphanothecaceae). The genome sequence of the diatom is 60.3 megabases in span, and the cyanobacterial genome has a length of 2.

Changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) pattern in the tropical Pacific modulate radiative feedbacks to greenhouse gas forcing, the pace of global warming and regional climate impacts. Therefore, elucidating the drivers of the pattern is critically important for reducing uncertainties in future projections. However, the causes of observed changes over recent decades, an enhancement of the zonal SST contrast coupled with a strengthening of the Walker circulation, are still debated.

Mineralogical investigation of asbestos contamination of soil near old vermiculite processing plant in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

From 1954 to 1983, a vermiculite processing facility operated near the Honolulu airport and processed raw material from the Libby, Montana mine, which is now well known for the high asbestos content of its clay deposits. The factory was closed in 1983 due to health hazard concerns, and remediation was performed in 2001 as part of the Libby mine superfund project. However, because of close proximity of the closed-down facility to residential areas of metropolitan Honolulu, some concerns remain regarding the possible environmental persistence of the harmful contaminant.

Impact of a Fast Pass on Emergency Department Wait Times for Oncology Patients with Febrile Neutropenia.

This pilot study examined differences in wait times for oncology patients who presented to the emergency department, with or without a Fast Pass, for febrile neutropenia (FN). Inadequate circulating neutrophils create a health risk for FN patients. An increased number of patients are receiving chemotherapy in an outpatient setting and may experience delays when seeking treatment in the emergency department.

Background: Although uncommon, some individuals assigned male at birth (AMAB) seek voluntary genital ablative procedures, and others fantasize about it.

Aim: To learn more about the views of genital ablation and injuries in those who aspire to be castrated as compared with those who only fantasize about it.

Detecting the ecological footprint of selection.

The structure of communities is influenced by many ecological and evolutionary processes, but the way these manifest in classic biodiversity patterns often remains unclear. Here we aim to distinguish the ecological footprint of selection-through competition or environmental filtering-from that of neutral processes that are invariant to species identity. We build on existing Massive Eco-evolutionary Synthesis Simulations (MESS), which uses information from three biodiversity axes-species abundances, genetic diversity, and trait variation-to distinguish between mechanistic processes.

Community Culture Survey - Revised: Measuring neighborhood culture and exploring geographic, socioeconomic, and cultural determinants of health in samples across the United States and in Thailand.

Objectives: Research on links between social, geographic, and cultural determinants of health has been thwarted by inadequate measures of culture. The purpose of this study was to improve the measurement of community culture, defined as shared patterns of attitudes and behaviors among people within a neighborhood that distinguish it from others, and to examine dimensions of culture, independent of socioeconomic and demographic factors, and their relationships with health.

Background: Trace metals such as iron, nickel, copper, zinc, and cadmium (Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd) are essential micronutrients (and sometimes toxins) for phytoplankton, and the analysis of trace-metal stable isotopes in seawater is a valuable tool for exploring the biogeochemical cycling of these elements in the ocean. However, the complex and often time-consuming chromatography process required to purify these elements from seawater has limited the number of trace-metal isotope samples which can be easily processed in biogeochemical studies.
