Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been used in the field of tissue engineering as a scaffold due to its good biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical strength. With the aim to explore the degradability of PLGA electrospun nonwoven structures for oral mucosa tissue engineering applications, non-irradiated and gamma irradiated nonwovens were immersed in three different solutions, in which simulated body fluid (SBF) and artificial saliva are important for future oral mucosa tissue engineering. The nonwovens were immersed for 7, 15 and 30 days in SBF, culture media (DMEM) and artificial saliva at 37 °C.

Binderless pure silica zeolites (zeosils) spheres and hollow spheres with a diameter of 20 µm composed of silicalite-1 nanosheets particles were prepared by pseudomorphic transformation of spherical silica beads using different temperatures (110, 130, and 150 °C) and treatment times (1-5 days) in order to adapt the local dissolution rate of silica to the crystallization rate of silicalite-1 nanosheets allowing to preserve the initial morphology of the silica beads. Fully crystalline beads of 20 µm were obtained at 110 °C for 5 days, whereas hollow spheres similar in size were synthesized at higher temperatures. The crystallization process seems to begin at the outer surface of the amorphous silica beads and spreads with the time in the interior of the beads leading to a dissolution of the inner amorphous part of the beads to create zeosil hollow spheres for the highest treatment temperatures (130 and 150 °C).

As promising fibrous reinforcements in the thick composites manufacturing, 3-dimensional warp interlock fabrics (3DWIFs) are recognised more and more in the industry for their outstanding mechanical properties compared to the 2D laminates. The present work shows the influence of the fabric's architecture on the tensile behaviour of 3DWIFs. Five kinds of 3D fabrics with different interlock structures have been designed according to the main category of binding warp yarn evolution.

This research investigation proposes a new method for sustainable olive mill wastewater (OMW) treatment and handling. It is based on the combination of its impregnation onto raw cypress sawdust (RCS) followed by electrocoagulation. The retention of OMW compounds onto various RCS doses show an important decrease of its chemical oxygen demand (COD) and its main cation and anion content.

A new phosphine is proposed as efficient coinitiator for camphorquinone (CQ)-based photoinitiating systems for the free radical polymerization of (meth)acrylates. Remarkably, this new co-initiator can exhibit two functionalities: a phosphine moiety to overcome oxygen inhibition and an iodonium salt moiety as counter cation to initiate the polymerization process. Excellent polymerization performances in the presence of CQ for the free radical polymerization of methacrylates under blue light are observed, and amine-free systems can be easily developed from the proposed structure.

Our aim is to complement observer-dependent approaches of immune cell evaluation in microscopy images with reproducible measures for spatial composition of lymphocytic infiltrates. Analyzing such patterns of inflammation is becoming increasingly important for therapeutic decisions, for example in transplantation medicine or cancer immunology. We developed a graph-based assessment of lymphocyte clustering in full whole slide images.

Additive manufacturing or 3D printing has attracted the interest of researchers in industry and academia because of its outstanding features. In this study, a new three-component photoinitiating system (PIS) consisting of safranin O (SFH), thiol derivatives and diphenyl iodonium salt was used for the free radical photopolymerization of a diacrylate monomer (SR349) in DLP 3D printing. The photoinitiating characteristics of this PIS were evaluated and advantageously compared to those of a conventional PI (TPO) by using RT-FTIR.

Objective: Motivated by the well documented worldwide spread of adverse drug events, as well as the increased danger of antibiotic resistance (caused mainly by inappropriate prescribing and overuse), we propose a novel recommendation system for antibiotic prescription (PARS).
Method: Our approach is based on the combination of semantic technologies with MCDA (Multiple Criteria Decision Aiding) that allowed us to build a two level decision support model. Given a specific domain, the approach assesses the adequacy of an alternative/action (prescription of antibiotic) for a specific subject (patient) with an issue (bacterial infection) in a given context (medical).

Human mesenchymal stem (hMSCs) are defined as multi-potent colony-forming cells expressing a specific subset of plasma membrane markers when grown on flat tissue culture polystyrene. However, as soon as hMSCs are used for transplantation, they are exposed to a 3D environment, which can strongly impact cell physiology and influence proliferation, differentiation and metabolism. Strategies to control in vivo hMSC behavior, for instance in stem cell transplantation or cancer treatment, are skewed by the un-physiological flatness of the standard well plates.

Hypothesis: The interpolymer complex formation between poly(vinylpyridine)-based polymers with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), in aqueous or organic medium, is driven by the hydrogen-bonding complexation. Well-defined nanostructures, with specific practical applications, may be obtained by taking advantage of such non-covalent interactions.
Experiments: Poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PCHMA) and poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(t-butyl methacrylate)-b-poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PtBuMA-b-PCHMA) copolymers were synthesized by sequential anionic polymerization.

The aim of the present study is to obtain, for the first time, polymeric nanocarriers based on the chitosan grafted-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate derivative. The strategy involves the use of chitosan grafted-poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate with high solubility in water, obtained via Michael addition, in order to prepare potentially non-toxic micro/nanoparticles (MNPs). By modifying chitosan, its solubility in aqueous media was improved.

A solvent-free process is described for the synthesis of tailor-made molecules from a one-pot, two-step approach combining aza-Michael addition and photoinduced copper(i) catalysed azide-alkyne (photo-CuAAC) reactions. After the first reaction between an amine and an acrylate, cycloaddition between an azide and an alkyne is activated by light irradiation in the presence of a copper complex. The kinetics of the aza-Michael addition and photo-CuAAC reaction were investigated by liquid state H NMR spectroscopy and real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Reading deficits have been reported for patients suffering from schizophrenia namely, specific phonological processing deficits. Phonological processing skills are crucial in the learning-to-read process as they are necessary to develop visual expertise for print, which reflects the neural specialization for print. The present study is the first to test visual expertise for print in patients suffering from schizophrenia by measuring the N170 component.

Purpose: The development of common ontologies has recently been identified as one of the key challenges in the emerging field of surgical data science (SDS). However, past and existing initiatives in the domain of surgery have mainly been focussing on individual groups and failed to achieve widespread international acceptance by the research community. To address this challenge, the authors of this paper launched a European initiative-OntoSPM Collaborative Action-with the goal of establishing a framework for joint development of ontologies in the field of SDS.

This review is an attempt to update the recent advances in the self-assembly of amphiphilic block and graft copolymers. Their micellization behavior is highlighted for linear AB, ABC triblock terpolymers, and graft structures in non-aqueous selective polar and non-polar solvents, including solvent mixtures and ionic liquids. The micellar characteristics, such as particle size, aggregation number, and morphology, are examined as a function of the copolymers' architecture and molecular characteristics.

The proper integration of biophysical cues from the cell vicinity is crucial for cells to maintain homeostasis, cooperate with other cells within the tissues, and properly fulfill their biological function. It is therefore crucial to fully understand how cells integrate these extracellular signals for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Topography has emerged as a prominent component of the cellular microenvironment that has pleiotropic effects on cell behavior.

1,3-Bis(mesityl)imidazolium tetraphenylborate (IMesH BPh ) can be synthesized in one step by anion metathesis between the corresponding imidazolium chloride and sodium tetraphenylborate. In the presence of 2-isopropylthioxanthone (sensitizer), an IMes N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand can be photogenerated under irradiation at 365 nm through coupled electron/proton transfer reactions. By combining this tandem NHC photogenerator system with metathesis inactive [RuCl (p-cymene)] precatalyst, the highly active RuCl (p-cymene)(IMes) complex can be formed in situ, enabling a complete ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene in the matter of minutes at room temperature.
