Department of Biology, University of Waterloo, 200 University Avenue W., Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3G1, Canada. Electronic address:

Aquatic habitats in urban environments are exposed to complex contaminant mixtures that may harm aquatic biota. The impact of contaminant transfer from contaminated biofilm through aquatic food webs is still understudied, as is the current state of knowledge on dietary exposure of urban contaminants to biota residing in stormwater ponds. Our overall objective was to characterize urban pesticide accumulation in a common aquatic food source (biofilm) in stormwater ponds and to investigate the potential toxicity of that food source by testing the responses of two freshwater macroinvertebrates to experimental exposure.

Two common types of cardiovascular disease are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) which occur from changes to sarcomere contractile mechanisms and activity. Actin amino acid substitutions R312C and R312H have been found in HCM and DCM patients, respectively. Previously, we observed that R312C/H variants display both hyperactivity and hypoactivity in vitro, contradicting traditional characterizations of HCM- and DCM-causing variants.

  • Defining dance is complex due to various forms of human movement being categorized under it, ranging from rhythmic dancing to tai chi and pantomime.
  • The authors suggest that a broader definition of dance can be understood as "mindful movement," emphasizing conscious awareness as a key element.
  • They propose that mindful movement involves suspending the automatization of movements that usually happens as skills are learned, allowing for greater aesthetic attention and re-engagement with previously unconscious details of movement.
