Objective: Salivary glands of primary SS (pSS) patients characteristically harbour periductal infiltrates, in which lymphoepithelial lesions (LELs) can develop. LELs are composed of hyperplastic ductal epithelium with infiltrating lymphocytes and may assist in the challenging diagnostic process of pSS. As manual identification of LELs remains difficult, we aimed to identify LELs by using an objective digital image analysis (DIA) algorithm that detects intraepithelial lymphocytes.

The nephrotoxic effects of heavy metals have gained increasing scientific attention in the past years. Recent studies suggest that heavy metals, including cadmium, lead, and arsenic, are detrimental to kidney transplant recipients (KTR) even at circulating concentrations within the normal range, posing an increased risk for graft failure. Thallium is another highly toxic heavy metal, yet the potential consequences of the circulating thallium concentrations in KTR are unclear.

Asthma is a respiratory disease that currently affects around 300 million people worldwide and is defined by coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, mucus overproduction, chest tightness, and expiratory airflow limitation. Increased levels of interleukin 17 (IL-17) have been observed in sputum, nasal and bronchial biopsies, and serum of patients with asthma compared to healthy controls. Patients with higher levels of IL-17 have a more severe asthma phenotype.

Cascade-reaction chemistry can generate reactive-oxygen-species that can be used for the eradication of infectious biofilms. However, suitable and sufficient oxygen sources are not always available near an infection site, while the reactive-oxygen-species generated are short-lived. Therefore, we developed a magnetic cascade-reaction container composed of mesoporous FeO@SiO nanoparticles containing glucose-oxidase and l-arginine for generation of reactive-oxygen-species.

A short period (1-2 h) of hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (HOPE) after static cold storage is safe and reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury-related complications after liver transplantation. Machine perfusion time is occasionally prolonged for logistical reasons, but it is unknown if prolonged HOPE is safe and compromises outcomes. We conducted a multicenter, observational cohort study of patients transplanted with a liver preserved by prolonged (≥4 h) HOPE.

Background: The European Platform on Rare Disease Registration (EU RD Platform) aims to address the fragmentation of European rare disease (RD) patient data, scattered among hundreds of independent and non-coordinating registries, by establishing standards for integration and interoperability. The first practical output of this effort was a set of 16 Common Data Elements (CDEs) that should be implemented by all RD registries. Interoperability, however, requires decisions beyond data elements - including data models, formats, and semantics.

Background: Now that immunotherapy plus chemotherapy (CT) is one standard option in first-line treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), there exists a medical need to assess the efficacy of second-line treatments (2LT) with antiangiogenics (AA). We performed an individual patient data meta-analysis to validate the efficacy of these combinations as 2LT.
Methods: Randomised trials of AA plus standard 2LT compared to 2LT alone that ended accrual before 2015 were eligible.

Introduction: In stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) reduces the brain metastases incidence and prolongs the progression-free survival without improving overall survival. PCI increases the risk of toxicity and is currently not adopted in routine care. Our objective was to assess the cost-effectiveness of PCI compared with no PCI in stage III NSCLC from a Dutch societal perspective.

It is not yet established whether additional orbicularis oculi muscle excision leads to better patient-reported aesthetic outcomes (PRO) compared to a skin-only resection blepharoplasty. A double-blind randomized controlled trial of upper blepharoplasty, with or without muscle excision, was performed on 54 White European patients who assessed the procedure via PRO. FACE-Q questionnaires covering eyes in general, upper eyelids, forehead and eyebrows, overall face, age appearance appraisal, age appraisal, social functioning, satisfaction with the outcome, and adverse effects were completed preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months after upper blepharoplasty.

Self-targeting antimicrobial platforms have yielded new possibilities for the treatment of infectious biofilms. Self-targeting involves stealth transport through the blood circulation towards an infectious biofilm, where the antimicrobial platform penetrates and accumulates in a biofilm in response to a change in environmental conditions, such as local pH. In a final step, nano-antimicrobials need to be activated or the antimicrobial cargo of nanocarriers released.

The human gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem that is involved in its host's metabolism, immunity and health. Although interindividual variations in gut microbial composition are mainly driven by environmental factors, some gut microorganisms are heritable and thus can be influenced by host genetics. In the past 5 years, 12 microbial genome-wide association studies (mbGWAS) with >1,000 participants have been published, yet only a few genetic loci have been consistently confirmed across multiple studies.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system that is characterized by inflammation and focal areas of demyelination, ultimately resulting in axonal degradation and neuronal loss. Several lines of evidence point towards a role for microglia and other brain macrophages in disease initiation and progression, but exactly how lesion formation is triggered is currently unknown. Here, we characterized early changes in MS brain tissue through transcriptomic analysis of normal appearing white matter (NAWM).

Diabetic foot ulcers infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria form a severe complication of diabetes. Antimicrobial-loaded hydrogels are used as a dressing for infected wounds, but the ongoing rise in the number of antimicrobial-resistant infections necessitates new, nonantibiotic based designs. Here, a guanosine-quadruplex (G )-hydrogel composed of guanosine, 2-formylphenylboronic acid, and putrescine is designed and used as a cascade-reaction container.

Introduction: End-ischaemic preservation of a donor liver by dual hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (DHOPE) for 2 hours prior to transplantation is sufficient to mitigate ischaemia-reperfusion damage and fully restore cellular energy levels. Clinical studies have shown beneficial outcomes after transplantation of liver grafts preserved by DHOPE compared with static cold storage. In addition to graft reconditioning, DHOPE may also be used to prolong preservation time, which could facilitate logistics for allocation and transplantation globally.

This work investigated the effects of different chemical structures of human milk oligosaccharides (hMOs) and non-digestible carbohydrates (NDCs) on pathogen adhesion by serving as decoy receptors. Pre-exposure of pathogens to inulins and low degree of methylation (DM) pectin prevented binding to gut epithelial Caco2-cells, but effects were dependent on the molecules' chemistry, pathogen strain and growth phase. Pre-exposure to 3-fucosyllactose increased E.

Duodenoscopy-associated infections occur worldwide despite strict adherence to reprocessing standards. The exact scope of the problem remains unknown because a standardized sampling protocol and uniform sampling techniques are lacking. The currently available multi-society protocol for microbial culturing by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Society for Microbiology, published in 2018 is too laborious for broad clinical implementation.
